"Star Trek: Discovery" has gone to some pretty wild places. The show's first two seasons were set about a decade prior to the events of the original 1966 "Star Trek" series, at a time when the Federation was about to go to war with the Klingon Empire. At that time, the U.S.S. Discovery had recently discovered that the entire galaxy was populated by a vast network of interdimensional spores(!) that aren't readable by most starship scanners. The Discovery was able to tie its engines into the network and instantaneously teleport anywhere in the galaxy. So much for trekking.
This was such an astonishing technology, even by "Star Trek" standards, that the writers of "Discovery" found themselves in a pickle. Wouldn't the ability to teleport anywhere in the galaxy cause a fundamental shift in the way "Star Trek" operates? Indeed, wouldn't any of the multiple "Star Trek" shows that followed...

Ethan Peck's first professional acting credit came in 1995 with an appearance on the short-lived ABC crime drama "Charlie Grace" with Mark Harmon and Leelee Sobieski. He was nine. At age 13, he appeared in the Olson Twins vehicle "Passport to Paris" before landing a notable gig as the young Kelso in flashback scenes on "That '70s Show." This would only be the first time Peck would play a "legacy" character. In addition to Kelso, Peck inherited the role of Patrick Verona from Heath Ledger in the TV adaptation of "10 Things I Hate About You."
The most notable legacy character in Peck's career to date has, of course, been Spock from "Star Trek," a role he inherited from Leonard Nimoy. Peck's version of Spock fills out the character's backstory for the decade immediately prior to the events of the original series, wherein audiences learned that he had a long lost...

"Star Trek: Discovery" ended its fourth season back in March, wrapping up a story that involved a mysterious, destructive spatial phenomenon called simply the Dark Matter Anomaly, or Dma. After a good deal of galactic investigation, the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery found that the Dma was created by an outside, non-humanoid, non-verbal alien species called Species 10-c. Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) eventually learned that Species 10-c created the Dma as a means to power a protective supra-shield it had made for itself. They didn't realize the destructive power the Dma had.
At the beginning of season three, the premise of "Discovery" changed. It was no longer set in the decade before the events of the original 1966 series, but was thrown nearly a millennium into the future to see what the Federation looked like after a galaxy-wide cataclysm robbed the organization of its typically-trusted diplomatic clout. Season five...

The first two seasons of "Star Trek: Discovery" felt a little bit adrift. The first season took place largely during a war between the Federation and the Klingons, and was about the Starfleet officer, Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), who found herself in the center of it all. In what could have been an interesting "Star Trek" wrinkle, the titular ship had the ability to teleport anywhere in the galaxy using a previously undiscovered galaxy-wide network of microscopic interdimensional spores. The ramifications of a ship that can instantly carry people and supplies anywhere in the galaxy were never fully discussed, as the U.S.S. Discovery became...

To celebrate the release of Star Trek: Discovery, which returns for its fifth season next year as well as coming to Paramount+ in the UK, we sat down with its captain to find out about its long journey.
The series begins around ten years before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series when Commander Michael Burnham’s recklessness starts a war between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire. She is court-martialed, demoted, and reassigned to the USS Discovery, which has a unique means of propulsion called the “Spore Drive”. After an adventure in the Mirror Universe, Discovery helps end the Klingon war.
Speaking to Martin-Green about the show, we chat about its huge success, the challenges of tackling the Star Trek lore with new adventures, how the show has helped drive the conversations over equality and acceptance and helped change the narratives, whether season five will...
