In a surprising move, Mission: Impossible filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie has parted ways with his entire representation team. He has cut ties with his agents at CAA, Key Creatives manager Ken Kamins and attorney David Fox, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
He is now repped by Matt Galsor of Greenberg Glusker, who also happens to be Tom Cruise’s attorney.
The move is causing waves, as his team had been with him for years as he climbed the ranks from screenwriter to Cruise collaborator and franchise filmmaker. McQuarrie was an almost unstoppable force until this past summer’s Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, which Hollywood had high hopes for in light of 2022 hit Top Gun: Maverick, which McQuarrie produced and co-wrote, as well as in light of the well regarded previous installment, Mission: Impossible Fallout.

Exclusive: Christopher McQuarrie has major change in his representation. He has left CAA, his longtime manager Ken Kamins at Key Creatives, and his attorney David Fox. I’m told he will be represented by Matt Galsor at Greenberg Glusker. He is the attorney for Tom Cruise, with whom McQuarrie has been a regular collaborator on the Mission: Impossible blockbuster films.
This is a shocker reverberating around town. It sounds like McQuarrie has a lot of his runway lit going into the future; among other things, he is producing the outer space movie that Cruise and director Doug Liman are planning with Universal, NASA and Space X. I understand there wasn’t a lot of drama here in the conveyance of the exit, but if McQuarrie has his dance card set far into the future, it certainly seems like he will be saving a lot of money in commissions. None of...

Exclusive: On the heels of a record-breaking Tko with its Michael B. Jordan-directed boxing pic Creed III for Amazon/MGM, Jordan’s Outlier Society will team with the Mission: Impossible franchise’s Christopher McQuarrie to produce Iron Curtain, a new action thriller in early development at Amazon Studios.
Plot details are being kept under wraps. But McQuarrie and Emmy winner Erik Jendresen (Band of Brothers) will handle the rewrites on McQuarrie’s original screenplay. Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo will produce for Outlier Society, which has had a first-look film deal and overall TV deal with Amazon since 2021.
McQuarrie penned the script for Iron Curtain back in 2003 and while he initially set up the property with Intermedia, rights later transferred to Resurgence Media Group, where they remained for years. Raposo has had a long history with McQuarrie, given her 15 years at Paramount Pictures building up to the role of President of Production.

Exclusive: James Wan has been labeled by fans for being responsible for killer doll movies, specifically his Conjuring franchise spinoff, Annabelle.
“It’s funny, I really hadn’t done that yet,” says the horror auteur. And that was his prime reason to create M3GAN with screenwriter Akela Cooper.
“In my previous doll movies — they don’t kill anyone. Annabelle never gets up and walks around. Everyone says I’m the killer doll guy. So I said, I’m going to make a killer doll movie for a brand new generation. Today’s kids didn’t grow up with Chucky like we did,” continues Wan who produced the PG-13 film and wrote the story with Cooper on script.

‘Lord of the Rings’ at 20: Why Peter Jackson’s Trilogy Was One of Hollywood’s Riskiest Projects Ever
After success with several small-scale films, Peter Jackson in 1992 told Variety he was looking for a project “that will really push me.”
He found something that surpassed everyone’s expectations. This month marks the 20th anniversary of Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings,” which kicked off the 2001-2003 film trilogy based on the books by J.R.R. Tolkien.
In 2000, Jackson told Variety “Lotr” was “the Holy Grail of filmmaking, a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
In retrospect, handing this massive project to Jackson seems like a no-brainer: great material for a great filmmaker. But in fact, there were so many unknown factors that it was immediately recognized as one of film history’s greatest gambles.
“I read ‘Lord of the Rings’ first as a 17 year-old,” Jackson told Variety. “I wasn’t one of those avid fans who read it every year. Fran and I were childhood fan of the ‘Sinbad’ movies,...

The endless fascination with The Beatles continues on Disney+, which is celebrating its second anniversary with a cavalcade of new content, including director Peter Jackson’s three-part examination of the Fab Four’s lasting influence as seen in its creative process.
The first clip from The Beatles: Get Back rolls out on Nov. 25. The docuseries from Lord of the Rings director Jackson was made entirely from never-before-seen, restored footage. It claims to provide the most intimate and honest glimpse into the creative process and relationship between John, Paul, George, and Ringo ever filmed.
The focus is on the band’s January 1969 recording sessions, showcasing The Beatles’ creative process as they attempt to write 14 new songs in preparation for their first live concert in over two years.
Faced with a nearly impossible deadline, the strong bonds of friendship shared by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr are put to the test.

Ever since Bob Shaye launched the company in 1967 to release arthouse, foreign language and cult films on college campuses, New Line Cinema had been a studio known for out-of-the box choices necessitated by being the last stop for good material. From the audacious early John Waters films like Pink Flamingos to Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, New Line found gems others missed, even after Ted Turner bought the studio. New Line had launched Jim Carrey with The Mask, leveled up Mike Myers with Austin Powers, and given a home to filmmakers like Paul Thomas Anderson with Boogie Nights and David Fincher with Se7en. Shaye had shown his studio to be a place of creative risk taking.
But New Line had never taken a financial risk like The Lord of the Rings trilogy. As a matter of fact, no one else in Hollywood had; three films, each with budgets of $120 million,...

Peter Jackson’s The Beatles: Get Back is now a docuseries. Three two-hour episodes will premiere November 25, 26, and 27 on Disney+. Coming out as another Thanksgiving offering, the documentary series carries a special historical weight. When The Beatles first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964, they broke TV viewing records, with 73 million having watched it live. To be fair, television was the main source of entertainment at the time and there were only three networks.
But “even the criminals stayed home to watch,” George Harrison remembers in the three-part Beatles Anthology series, which premiered to 27.3 million viewers when the first episode aired on ABC on November 19, 1995. The Beatles: Get Back’s opening is also being rolled out over three days. That’s because Jackson found over six hours of never-before-seen restored footage.

Disney has opted against a theatrical release for Peter Jackson’s upcoming documentary on The Beatles, “Get Back.” The documentary will now be released as a six-hour, three-episode docuseries on Disney+ rolling out over the Thanksgiving weekend.
Each episode will be around two hours long and will premiere Nov. 25-27.
“The Beatles: Get Back” was originally set to hit theaters in September 2020, and most recently had been scheduled for an August 27 release.
The series includes never-before-seen footage from The Beatles’ recording sessions during their 1970 album “Let It Be,” including the iconic rooftop concert on London’s Savile Row, which marked their final live performance as a group. In all, the doc features footage from more than 60 hours of film (shot by Michael Lindsay-Hogg) and more than 150 hours of unheard audio.
“In many respects, Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s remarkable footage captured multiple storylines,” Jackson said. “The story of friends and of individuals.

Exclusive: For nearly 15 years, director Ramin Bahrani and novelist Aravind Adiga shared a symbiotic relationship of inspiration that culminated into Netflix’s rags-to-riches drama The White Tiger.
Bahrani’s 2005 feature Man Push Cart inspired Adiga, a former Columbia University classmate, to write The White Tiger, a searing novel about one man’s determination to rise through the ranks of India’s caste system. Upon reading Adiga’s early drafts before White Tiger published in 2008, Bahrani knew he had to adapt it for the big screen.
“I had been reading the novel in draft form for four years before it was published. I was immediately riveted,” Bahrani said during the film’s panel for Deadline’s Contenders Film.

The Beatles‘ final film, Let It Be, showed a tired band in the midst of a breakup. That didn’t mean the musicians weren’t having a good time. They were just concentrating on learning and rehearsing new music. Peter Jackson found the fun in the tedium of discovery and Walt Disney Studios bought the worldwide distribution rights. Executive Chairman Bob Iger announced that Disney will release the documentary The Beatles: Get Back in the U.S. and Canada on Sept. 4, 2020. Global release details will follow.
“No band has had the kind of impact on the world that The Beatles have had, and The Beatles: Get Back is a front-row seat to the inner workings of these genius creators at a seminal moment in music history, with spectacularly restored footage that looks like it was shot yesterday,” Iger said in a statement.

Peter Jackson has found his next project: The “Lord of the Rings” filmmaker is making a new documentary about The Beatles, Variety reports. The project will repurpose 55 hours of unused footage shot in 1969 for The Beatles’ 1970 film “Let It Be.” While no release date has been announced, Paul McCartney previously hinted that a new project was in the works to mark the film’s 50th anniversary. A thrilling proposition on its own, Jackson’s involvement will take the project to another level.
“The 55 hours of never-before-seen footage and 140 hours of audio made available to us ensure this movie will be the ultimate ‘fly on the wall’ experience that Beatles fans have long dreamt about,” Jackson said in a statement. “It’s like a time machine transports us back to 1969, and we get to sit in the studio watching these four friends make great music together.”

Breaking: Peter Jackson and The Beatles are coming together. Apple Corps Ltd. and WingNut Films Ltd. are teaming the director of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies and The Beatles for a feature documentary. Jackson will direct a movie that is based on 55 hours of never-released footage of The Beatles in the studio. Shot between January 2 and January 31, 1969, the studio sessions produced The Beatles’ Grammy Award winning album Let It Be, with its Academy Award winning title song. The result was the swan song of the super group: the album was released 18 months later in May 1970, several months after the band had broken up.
The footage was originally intended for a planned TV special, but organically turned into something completely different, climaxing with The Beatles’ legendary performance on the roof of Apple’s Savile Row London office — which took place exactly 50 years ago today.

Universal has released a unique first trailer for “Mortal Engines,” depicting a world of predator cities existing thousands of years after current civilization has been destroyed by a cataclysmic event.
“We have to stop London before it destroys us” is one of the lines in the FX-heavy footage, released Tuesday.
Peter Jackson is on board as a producer and screenwriter, re-teaming with “Hobbit” screenwriters with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens in “Mortal Engines,” set in a steampunk world where entire cities have been mounted on wheels and prey on one another. It’s Jackson’s first feature project since the completion of the Hobbit trilogy in 2014.
Robert Sheehan stars as museum apprentice Tom Natsworthy from the city of London who finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive assassin Hester Shaw, played by Hera Hilmar, who’s out to avenge the death of her mother.

A fascinating bit of information has been revealed regarding Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings in a new book detailing the director's journey of making the movie. The book reveals that at one point disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein threatened to fire Jackson and replace him with Quentin Tarantino on the project!
The book is called Anything You Can Imagine: Peter Jackson and the Making of Middle-earth, by Ian Nathan and in it, we learn that Weinstein hated the idea of breaking the film up into three films. He wanted that whole epic story to be condensed into one movie and the producer threatened to fire Jackson if he didn't do that.
Thanks to The Stuff, we have an excerpt from the book that reads:

Before Peter Jackson teamed up with New Line Cinema on his massive “The Lord of the Rings” movie trilogy, he first started developing his J.R.R. Tolkien adaptation at Miramax under the supervision of Harvey Weinstein. But trying to make an expensive fantasy epic with Weinstein proved impossible for Jackson, as is clear in British film writer Ian Nathan’s new book, “Anything You Can Imagine: Peter Jackson & The Making of Middle-Earth.”
According to Nathan’s book (via The Guardian), Weinstein believed Jackson was wasting $12 million by developing “The Lord of the Rings” as a franchise made up of multiple movies. Jackson was planning to make two “Lord of the Rings” films with Miramax. Weinstein reportedly threatened to replace Jackson with his longtime collaborator Quentin Tarantino if Jackson did not agree to make a single two-hour adaptation of the text. Weinstein was also eyeing “Shakespeare in Love” director John Madden.

Universal has released the first teaser trailer for Peter Jackson‘s new project, ‘Mortal Engines’. Although you might think otherwise from the way that the trailer presents the film, Jackson does not direct. Instead, the ‘Lord of the Rings‘ helmer serves as writer and producer for the upcoming fantasy epic, while Christian Rivers sits in the director’s chair for his first feature outing. Rivers has had a long working relationship with Jackson, as Rivers worked as a 2nd unit director and special effects artist on the ‘Lotr’ trilogy.
