Jeff Fowler will return to direct. Screenwriting credits have not been confirmed, but Pat Casey and Josh Miller wrote the first two films, with John Whittington co-writing the second film.

Tommy Wirkola‘s action-thriller Violent Night is getting a sequel, we learned last year, but what’s the latest on that project? Is it still happening or has it fallen by the wayside?
Chatting with Collider at SXSW last week, Violent Night producer Kelly McCormick promised that Violent Night 2 is definitely still happening, and might be filming next year.
“We are planning on returns to those universes,” McCormick responded when the outlet asked for updates on sequels to both Nobody and the Christmas movie Violent Night.
McCormick teased, “Hopefully, honestly, even potentially end of this year for Nobody 2 and, beginning of next year for Violent Night 2, if we can find time in everybody’s busy schedules.
“But the development’s going super well and everybody’s really, really excited about moving those worlds forward.”

Not long after hunting a monstrously-sized spider in Kiah Roache-Turner’s upcoming horror thriller Sting, Alyla Browne is hanging out with Sonic the Hedgehog and his fast-moving friends. The up-and-coming actress revealed she’s playing Maria Robotnik for Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3. According to Sonic the Hedgehog lore, Maria Robotnik is Professor Gerald Robotnik’s granddaughter and Doctor Robotnik’s cousin.
While there’s a chance Browne is playing a different character named Maria, I’ll bet my collection of original Sonic the Hedgehog Sega Genesis cartridges she’s the character who debuted in Sonic Adventure 2. If you smell chili dogs on the wind, it’s likely because Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is racing into production! Ramping up after the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes ended, Paramount Pictures teased a show start image on Twitter. The pic features a striking new logo for the sequel on a clapper. The logo appears to shorten the title to Sonic 3 instead of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Standing next to the clapper with clenched fists is a mysterious-looking character. At first, you might think it’s Sonic. Still, upon closer inspection, the intimidating figure is indeed Shadow the Hedgehog, who was teased in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 during an after-credits sequence.

David Harbour would "love" to play Santa Claus again in 'Violent Night 2'.The 'Stranger Things' actor played a very different Father Christmas in last year's festive horror comedy, and a sequel had been in the works before the ongoing writers strike halted development.Speaking to Collider - in an interview conducted before the subsequent SAG-AFTRA strike - Harbour said: "Before the writers' strike there was, you know, maybe something that came in."We'll have to see where it fits if they can resolve all these labour issues."If the studios would please go to the table and end these labour issues, we could shoot all kinds of things I'd love to give to the people! But yes, we're in process."Earlier in the year, the film's director Tommy Wirkola confirmed a sequel was going ahead, with Pat Casey and Josh Miller both returning to pen the script.Wirkola...

Even with the ongoing WGA strike grinding Hollywood to a halt, seemingly nothing can stop Paramount from moving forward with plans for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. According to the film industry-related website Production List, cameras will roll on the threequel in London on August 31, 2023.
While details about Sonic the Hedgehog 3 remain a mystery, the sequel will likely introduce more fan-favorite characters from the more-popular-than-you-would-ever-think franchise, including Shadow the Hedgehog, who Paramount teased during an after-credits scene for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. While Shadow is a known quality, Sonic fans hope the film series is planning to introduce more characters, including Amy Rose, Big the Cat, Rogue the Bat, Cream the Rabbit, Vector the Crocodile, and more. So far, there has yet to be a word if Jim Carrey will return to reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik.

From the moment you saw the trailer, you knew exactly what you were going to get with Violent Night. The biggest selling points had to be the high concept and lead performer David Harbour. These days, he elevates just about everything he is in, so this already made it worth seeing.
The film opened to mixed reviews and reasonable box office, but Universal Home Entertainment seemed to release this in a rush, as a Blu-ray only release even as work begins on a sequel.
The Home Alone/Die Hard riffs are hard to miss but the inventiveness of the antics are amusing as a band of thieves led by John Leguizamo invade a Greenwich mansion to rob them blind. The bickering family spans three generations and most fill the stock character types one expects from such fare. It helps to have Beverly D’Angelo as the shrewish matriarch, able to go toe to toe with Leguizamo.

Santa Claus will return to spread Christmas cheer… and break a few skulls along the way. Violent Night was a modest box-office success, grossing over 75 million worldwide on a 20 million budget, and director Tommy Wirkola confirmed to The Wrap that Violent Night 2 is in the works.

You better watch out, you better not cry: David Harbour's killer Santa Claus is coming back with a sequel to last holiday season's "Violent Night," according to The Wrap. “Violent Night,” 2022’s “Bad Santa”-meets-“Die Hard” action movie, was a sleeper hit, making more than 75 million globally on a budget of only 25 million. (Plus untold riches from its PVOD release shortly after its theatrical bow.)
The Tommy Wirkola-directed and David Harbour-starring film saw Santa Claus, who in this mythology was originally an ancient Norse warrior, defend a family from killer thieves and also suggested a broader world.
And don’t worry, there will be more Christmases for Harbour’s Santa to save. “Yes,” Wirkola said when we asked if the sequel was happening. “We’re talking about it and we’re just making deals and getting everything in order.”
While speaking to TheWrap about the upcoming home video release of “Violent Night,” Wirkola said they wouldn’t shoot right away and have to get the script together. The second installment will also be written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller.

Edgar Wright, the acclaimed director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, has directed a minute-long advertisement for McDonald’s.
The filmmaker was hired by the popular fast food chain to make a short TV spot.
However, many fans of Wright were left scratching their head over the advert, cut using Wright’s distinctive rhythmic editing style – because it didn’t actually show McDonald’s at all.
Titled “Fancy a McDonald’s?”, the advert instead depicts an office full of people, who all wordlessly communicate their desire to go to the fast food restaurant.
The commercial then follows the people as they make their way out the building, making eyes at one another as they leave.
Fans fo the director expressed surprise over the advert on social media.
“Edgar Wright McDonalds ad was not on my bingo card tbh,” one person wrote.
“We need to parent trap Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg immediately.

It's been a rough couple of years at the movies, but if 2022 proved anything, it's that capital-c Cinema still stands a chance. The blockbuster came back in a major way this year — and not just for the tried-and-true Marvel Cinematic Universe. 2022 was, for better or worse, the year of the spectacle: big budgets, big effects and even bigger risk. It made for a surprisingly great year for action, especially the films that pushed the limits of the genre or even evoked some good old-fashioned nostalgia.
It's not an easy thing, picking favorites — but with the end of the year upon us, now's as good a time as any to reflect on the greatest additions to the genre in 2022. Whether these 15 films broke big or cruised under the radar, whether they relied on technical achievements or dipped into low humor now and again, they still managed to raise our pulses in their own special way.

Violent Night is a season comedy action movie that features a rather burnt out and disenchanted Santa Claus, who has to dig deep to muster a fight for what is right.
The film is directed by Tommy Wirkola, and stars David Harbour (Santa), Beverly D’Angelo and the great John Leguizamo. The original and funny screenplay is written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller.
A comedy that at times is completely absurd, amusing and funny, at others very violent, and even so, manages to convey the Christmas spirit and ambiance. We have not felt so much Christmas fervor since Bad Santa.
Premise
It is Christmas Eve at the Lightstone household.

Only two and half weeks have gone by since the theatrical release of director Tommy Wirkola’s R-rated holiday thriller Violent Night, which has been described as a perfect combination of gore and Christmas spirit (you can read our 8/10 review at This Link) – but as a special gift for the holidays, Universal has already gone ahead and given the film a digital release! You can rent or purchase Violent Night right now on Amazon.
Violent Night has made over 55 million at the global box office.
Scripted by Patrick Casey and Josh Miller (Sonic the Hedgehog), Violent Night shows what happens when a team of elite mercenaries breaks into a wealthy family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone inside hostage. But the team isn’t prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus (Harbour) is on the grounds, and he’s about to show why this Nick is no saint.

Look, I'm not here to call Andy Williams a liar or anything, but the Christmas season is not always "the most wonderful time of the year." In fact, despite the twinkly lights and readily available peppermint mocha offerings everywhere you look, Christmas can be a straight-up miserable time for a lot of people. The cruel irony is that this is also the time of year when sentimental films take over the airwaves, much to the chagrin of anyone feeling less than holly-jolly. Fortunately, alternative Christmas movies are aplenty, and this year brought the addition of "Violent Night," a soon-to-be Christmas classic, especially for anyone who favors watching a film like "Die Hard" instead of "A Christmas Story" to celebrate the season.

Like a cyanide-laced sugarplum, Violent Night is a jolly and vicious burst of holiday mayhem. Bloody and crass, yet brimming with Christmas spirit, it’s a 110-minute joke that largely works because of how firmly everyone involved commits to the bit.
David Harbour stars as Santa Claus, first seen drinking his holiday blues away at a London watering hole. Santa’s having a rough Christmas Eve; kids are getting greedier and naughtier every year, and he’s thinking of hanging up the hat. His night doesn’t get any easier when he heads to the United States-based home of a wealthy, heartless matriarch (Beverly D’Angelo), whose family has been taken hostage by a gang of thieves (led by John Leguizamo). While his first instinct is to fly off and finish his route, the presence of an innocent child (Leah Brady) causes Santa to reconsider, call upon the skills he learned...

Turns out Universal Pictures was willing to bet big on “Die Hard”-inspired holiday action movie “Violent Night.”
The R-rated Christmas movie stars David Harbour as Santa, who is willing to prove that he is no saint. Screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller referred to their long-gestating idea for the film as the “‘Die Hard’ Santa thing” that was on the border of being self-funded before they hit it big by penning Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie.
“At one point, we were like, ‘Is there a way to just make this ourselves for 30,000, Kevin Smith style?'” Miller told Vulture. “We usually didn’t even tell people about the idea. We didn’t think a regular production company would like it, let alone a major Hollywood studio. It was preposterous that anyone with money would think this was a good idea.”

By this point, it's clear that "Violent Night" is bound to become a Christmas classic. The action-comedy, directed by Tommy Wirkola, fuses the perverse humor of "Bad Santa" with the gory bits from "Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2" and the charm and wonder of films like "The Santa Clause." It's the perfect recipe for a holiday treat. With a script written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, "Violent Night" tells the story of the super-rich Lightstone Family, whose Christmas Eve gathering is crashed by a group of mercenaries. Santa Claus (David Harbour) unwittingly becomes entangled in the murderous takeover — if he wants to keep Christmas alive, he must survive the night.
As you might expect, "Violent Night" earns its hard-r rating for graphic violence and language. However, beneath all the blood there beats a delightfully humorous heart. Harbour delivers the physical gags to great effect, and the entire cast — which includes John Leguizamo,...

Listening to the lyrics of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town," it's easy to read a menacing tone from its warnings. Saint Nick sees you when you're sleeping. He even knows your sins. So you better watch out ... or else.
The idea of a less jolly Santa is a wellspring of humor and broken spines in Tommy Wirkola's "Violent Night," which sees David Harbour's Santa Claus doling out "season's beatings" in defense of a child on his coveted "good" list. As "Violent Night" steers its sleigh into theaters this week, moviegoers are treated to the sight of a hammer-swinging, street-fighting Father Christmas, bedecked in Celtic tattoos and crushing the heads and hearts of numerous henchmen commanded by John Leguizamo's holiday-hating mercenary Jimmy "Scrooge" Martinez. Pat Casey and Josh Miller's script ensures that nearly every holiday element finds its gruesome employment at the hands of Santa or Scrooge: tinsel becomes a garrote,...

What do you get when you cross Saint Nicholas with John Wick? Well, you get Violent Night, a Christmas-themed action-comedy that stars David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Santa Claus. The film took in 1.1 million in Thursday night previews, which has it on track to become a sleeper hit of the season.
Violent Night follows a team of mercenaries who break into a wealthy family compound on Christmas Eve and take everyone inside hostage, but the team isn’t prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus is on the grounds, and he’s about to show why this Nick is no saint. In addition to David Harbour, Violent Night also stars John Leguizamo (John Wick), Cam Gigandet (Without Remorse), Alex Hassell (Cowboy Bebop), Alexis Louder (The Tomorrow War), Edi Patterson (The Righteous Gemstones) and Beverly D’Angelo (National Lampoon’s Vacation). What do you get if you cross Die Hard, Bad Santa, Home Alone and Santa Claus: The Movie? The answer is Violent Night, a violent Christmas comedy horror that mixes up multiple festive favourites and just about gets away with it.
Directed by Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow), the film stars David Harbour as a depressed Santa Claus (the real one), who we first meet drowning his sorrows in a pub in Bristol, of all places, before taking off in his sled and vomiting on the bar’s owner from mid-air. With the tone set, we move to the house of the ultra-rich Lightstone household, where mean-spirited matriarch Gertrude (Beverly D’Angelo) has gathered various family members for Christmas Eve,...

I've been raving about Violent Night since I caught its premiere screening at Nycc, so I'm very excited for Daily Dead readers to check out the film that begins playing in theaters tonight! I recently caught up with director Tommy Wirkola, of Dead Snow and Hansel & Gretel fame, who told me all about bringing this hard-r Santa Claus action movie to life!

Are you wondering about the perfect holiday movie night present for that action-thriller adrenaline fanatic? Oh but those big, loud, shoot-em-up “thrill-rides” aren’t really invading the multiplex for several months. Well, here’s one that “fits the bill” on both counts cause it’s fight-filled yuletide stunt/explosion spectacular. So just who’s the new action hero at its center? None other than that jolly old whiskered icon himself. And he’s got more than a lump o’ coal for those on his naughty list. Yes, it’s a white Christmas splattered with lotsa’ dripping red on this very noisy Violent Night. As you might think, all is not calm.

On an event-free morning, afternoon, or possibly evening, longtime friends, high-school classmates, and screenwriting partners Pat Casey and Josh Miller (Sonic the Hedgehog I and II) turned to each other and simultaneously said: “What if Die Hard … but with a psycho Santa stepping in for Bruce Willis’ everyman cop, John McLane?” They probably laughed, jotted down the idea, and saved it for a future writing project. The outcome of that particular day, Violent Night, takes that semi-clever premise, adds underused performer David Harbour as the "real" Santa “Kris Kringle” Claus, and lets Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola, best known for cult favorite Dead Snow, a Nazi zombie gore-fest, to do his thing, alas to ever diminishing results. When we first...

Before donning the red suit, David Harbour was hesitant to play the not-so-jolly Santa Claus in “Violent Night.”
“My initial thoughts were like, ‘What the hell is this? I don’t know what you guys are talking about,'” Harbour told Variety at the red carpet premiere of “Violent Night” on Tuesday. “It was pitched to me as an action-comedy Christmas movie with Santa Claus at the center — who had a very different past and 10,000 years ago was a very different man — and that he has acquired a certain set of skills that he must use to fight bad guys in the future. However, after meeting with director Tommy Wirkola and producers at 87North, Harbour “started to get excited” about the concept.

Chicago – David Harbour is part Bad Santa, part John McClane in this yuletide spin on Die Hard which never takes itself the slightest bit seriously. It’s a spiked Christmas cocktail that’s surprisingly light on its feet. So Here comes Santa Claus with a sledge hammer ready to dispatch some North Pole justice to bad guys on his naughty list.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Harbour plays the legendary Kris Kringle as part burn out, part bad ass. When he first meet him, he’s taking an extended break on his Christmas Eve rounds, drowning his holiday sorrows in a pint of bitter in an English pub. He’s tired of the grind, tired of the kids who don’t believe, especially the ones who don’t appreciate what they’ve been given and just want more. Santa needs to shotgun a beer just to get through Christmas Eve these days.

It’s no secret that folks love to watch Santa Claus break bad. Despite being literally called “Father Christmas” in some cultures, this often rosy-cheeked symbol of generosity from childhood eventually becomes many an adult’s favorite villain: the crazed serial killer with an ax in Silent Night, Deadly Night; or the drunkard who urinates on himself at the mall in Bad Santa.
While some of those movies are better than others (namely the first Billy Bob Thornton iteration of a Yuletide lush), all of them seem to forget that, deep down, we still want to believe that Santa and the season he represents should be depicted as a force for good. Maturity comes in recognizing the world is more complex than a handful of flurries in a snow globe, but Santa need not be. For those of us still suffering from seasonal depression and the post-Halloween blues, it's uplifting when the holiday season is starting to move away from idealized family fare to embrace the horror genre a little more during the winter months. Compiling a list of 31 horror movies to watch every day in October isn't really considered a difficult task due to the sheer amount of titles to choose from. Now, it's starting to be considerably easier to come up with 25 horror movies to watch over the month of December as a kind of twisted version of an advent calendar. In fact, there's even a French holiday horror movie called "The Advent Calendar" that would be a perfect kickoff for a potential viewing guide. (/Film's list ranking the best Christmas horror should also help you on your quest.)

Bloody Disgusting’s Violent Night review is spoiler-free.
This holiday season brings a new answer to the tired debate over Die Hard: the ultra-violent yet sugar plum sweet Violent Night. Director Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) infuses his gore-soaked sense of humor into an amalgamation of familiar holiday fare, ushering a new crowd-pleasing Christmas-set actioner eager to splatter the snow red.
Violent Night introduces Santa Claus (David Harbour) as a cynic drowning his frustrations in booze at a bar on Christmas Eve. He laments the current greedy state of the world and its children to fellow patrons before stumbling off into the night to complete his holiday duties. Not before upchucking, of course; this Santa is a sloppy drunk.
Then, we meet the Lightstone family, an affluent and dysfunctional bunch gathering for Christmas. Young Trudy (Leah Brady) wants her estranged parents, Jason (Alex Hassell) and Linda (Alexis Louder), to reunite,...

As hard as you try, it can be really hard not to judge a book by its cover. When it comes to movies, there are certain times when you look at a poster, trailer, or synopsis and just know that it's going to be a bad time for you. If that's what you're looking for, that's fine, but then you can't get mad when you put it on and it's just as bad as you thought it was going to be. However, there is the rare occasion where the film ends up being immensely better than you ever could have imagined. The latest example of that phenomenon is "Violent Night."
The holiday action comedy directed by "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" filmmaker Tommy Wirkola and written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller of the recent "Sonic the Hedgehog" franchise follows a group of mercenaries as they target a wealthy family on Christmas Eve.

“Violent Night” is one of the Yuletide season’s most delightful surprises, not just for what it gets right but also for the many ways the whole production could have gone very, very wrong.
For starters, it’s a movie about Santa Claus, and for every “Miracle on 34th Street,” the history of Christmas movies is littered with tales of Saint Nick that could make a moviegoer hate the holiday. (“Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” or “Santa Claus: The Movie” leap to mind.)
It’s also a film that demands to be taken seriously on its own merits even as it blatantly references other Christmas classics — first and foremost, “Die Hard” and “Home Alone” — and it dares to mix bloody, hard-r action violence with a sentimental subplot about a young girl’s unwavering belief in Santa Claus. That it gets away with all of this and stays gorily entertaining and...

Have you ever torn open the wrapping on a promising Christmas gift, only to find once you’ve taken it out and assembled its pieces that it’s not really what you’d hoped for at all? That it’s shoddily made, or not quite what it claimed to be, or simply less fun than you’d expected?
Tommy Wirkola’s Violent Night is, blessedly, not that gift. It’s one that delivers exactly what it promises on the box. It does not necessarily deliver much more than it promises on the box, but then it doesn’t need to. For those to whom the idea of a home-invasion comedy-thriller starring David Harbour as a sledgehammer-wielding Kris Kringle holds self-evident appeal, this one seems destined to become an alt-holiday classic.
Pat Casey and Josh Miller’s script announces its gleefully tasteless brand of humor right away.

We’re scarcely five minutes into Tommy Wirkola’s naughty new Christmas tale “Violent Night” before David Harbour’s chubby, drunk, and righteously pissed off St. Nick is puking off his sleigh onto one very confused bartender and revealing himself to, yes indeed, be the jolly one himself. If you can vibe with that whiplash-inducing comedic opening — gallons of vomit mixed with some magical holiday sweetness — you just might be in the right frame of mind to receive what’s to come in this holiday trifle.
The big draw of “Violent Night” is, of course, right there in the title: the violence! Wirkola has often delighted in turning basic-ish ideas into bloody good fun with the addition of head-bashing twists. You can practically hear the elevator pitches: “It’s a horror movie about Nazis…who are also zombies” or “It’s Hansel and Gretel…but also they’re witch hunters.

The holiday season is now upon us, and it seems only right that we’re heading into December with a brand new Christmas-themed genre movie arriving in theaters later this week.
I’m of course talking about the David Harbour-starring Violent Night, which features the “Stranger Things” actor as an ass-kicking version of none other than Santa himself.
But that’s not the only new genre movie arriving this week…
Here’s all the new horror headed down the chimney November 28 – December 4, 2022!
This week is all quiet on the horror front until Thursday, December 1, which kicks off with the release of The Harbinger, which has been favorably compared to Nightmare on Elm Street.
In the film from writer/director Andy Mitton, “Monique ventures out of quarantine to visit an old friend who’s plagued by nightmares. She finds herself drawn into a hellish dreamscape where she must face her...

Most holiday seasons, we get some sort of theatrically-released Christmas movie that aims to not only succeed in the moment, but become something that can endure annually for years to come. It feels like it's been a while since we've had a bonafide holiday classic, but "Violent Night" feels like it could turn the tide. What's not to love about the idea of "Stranger Things" favorite David Harbour as an R-rated Santa Claus who isn't afraid to take out some bad guys? Speaking of those bad guys, it's not just going to be one man at the top with nameless, faceless henchmen. All of the bad guys are going to have something to do here.
This was important to director Tommy Wirkola, the man responsible for bringing the film to life. /Film's own Bill Bria recently spoke to the filmmaker about his latest effort, and the subject of the henchmen came up.
