The staff at Chastain Memorial has been let go. To little surprise, Fox has cancelled The Resident so that it won't be back for a seventh season.
A medical drama series, The Resident TV show stars Matt Czuchry, Manish Dayal, Bruce Greenwood, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Jane Leeves, Anuja Joshi, Jessica Lucas, Miles Fowler, Kaley Ronayne, and Andrew McCarthy. The series follows a group of doctors at Chastain Memorial Hospital, as they face personal and professional challenges on a daily basis. The end could be on the horizon for The Resident.
According to TV Line, the medical drama does not stand a great chance of being picked up for a seventh season.
"It's essentially done," a source close to the show told the outlet.
In a word? Whoa.
Despite The Resident Season 6 closing with a finale that functioned as a series-ender, there was still a hope the show would be picked up.
While one person's account of the situation can be wrong, TV Line cites "multiple sources" in its report.
More concerning is that it seems many of the show's props are being sold, which is usually an indication that a project has wrapped.
Fox did tell the outlet that no decision has been made about the show's future, but the show's prognosis is grim.
The Resident Season 6 averaged 2.8 million viewers and a 0.34 rating among adults 18-49.

The Resident is no longer returning this month on Fox.
The broadcast network has pushed back the premiere date for the back half of The Resident Season 5 to February 1.
That date was initially announced when the show went on hiatus late last year, but the network subsequently moved up the premiere.
"Our dearest besties: apologies for the scheduling changes, but we are pleased to announce that #TheResident will be back in a big way on February 1," reads a tweet on the official Twitter account for the show.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Resident Season 5 Episode 6 “Ask Your Doctor.”] The Resident is firmly post-time jump with “Ask Your Doctor,” and some things have changed at the hospital in the three years: Dr. Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal) is now an attending. Dr. Aj Austin (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) is now famous and an author and competing with Dr. Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood) for chief of surgery. But the biggest of all is that Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) is no longer working at Chastain! But don’t worry, a patient brings him back to his (former?) home, and not for the first time. As a single father, he’s putting his daughter first, and that means regular 9-5 hours and being home to treat her to a fancy dinner. That kind of work-life balance is something to be commended — and something that Dr. Leela Devi’s (Anuja Joshi) sister, Padma (Aneesha Joshi), wishes she’d have.

Expect to see much more of Dr. Leela Devi when The Resident returns: Anuja Joshi, who debuted as the surgical intern during Season 4, has been promoted to series-regular status for the show’s fifth season, per Deadline.
Joshi first appeared on the Fox medical drama about halfway through its fourth season, with Leela quickly establishing herself as an impressive doctor while quietly struggling with dyslexia. Throughout Season 4, she ultimately earned Aj’s respect in the operating room and formed a strong bond with Devon, the latter of whom she kissed (and probably more!) in the May 18 finale.
