Black. It is the color that absorbs all colors, the shade that holds the sun's warmth as it moves east to west. It is the color of a people, not just African but Caribbean, Middle Eastern, American, and more. But it is also music: the color at the center of the trumpet's brass ring, the shadow that fills the club when the lights get low and the party begins. Over the decades, Latin music has built a reputation for being wildly popular, no doubt in part due to its danceable nature. But what often gets lost in the conversation is the contribution that Black Latines had in cultivating the sound that, today, many of us regard as uniquely "Latin."

On Thursday night, Maria Becerra took the stage to both perform a stunning rendition of “Amigos,” along with special version of her song “Ojalá” on the Latin Grammys awards stage.
Alborán first took the stage alone, before Becerra joined him in a light pink dress as the two performed their Song of the Year nod on a lit-up stage. The musicians were backed by a string ensemble.
The two artists ended their rendition within a bright circle reminiscent of Alborán’s La Cuarta Hoja album cover.

Last year at the Grammys, Bad Bunny’s LP Un Verano Sin Ti made history as the first Spanish-language project nominated for Album of the Year, and his song “Moscow Mule” got a nod under Best Pop Solo Performance. These all seemed to be signs that the Recording Academy was broadening its view of Latin music and art and considering it for major categories, rather than siloing it to genre-specific categories.

The Best New Artist category is easily one of the most anticipated awards at the Latin Grammys. Last year, for the first time ever, there was a tie between rising Mexican singer-songwriter Silvana Estrada and Angela Alvarez, a 95-year-old Cuban grandmother whose relatives had submitted her album — proving anything can happen. For the 2023 ceremony, which takes place on Nov. 16 in Seville, Spain, 10 artists representing different genres and distinct musical cultures are vying for the award. The list includes acts from countries such as the U.S., Mexico, Venezuela, Spain, and more.

The Latin music industry had another massive year in 2022, seeing a 35 percent growth in revenue, according to the RIAA. That momentum shows no signs of slowing down as artists like Bad Bunny and Karol G continue topping the charts and selling out massive tours — and there are even more rising stars right at their heels, ready to take the music even farther.
2022 had plenty of breakout acts from across Latin America and the diaspora. Uncompromising and unapologetically honest artists such as Tokischa and Villano Antillano saw massive success, while rappers...

Across their EP Abismos, sisters Valeria and Valentina Perez are perfectly in sync, their diaphanous voices winding in and out of each other to create unexpected harmonies at every turn. As preternatural as it sounds, they admit it took them a while to find the stunning sense of unity that’s defined them as a duo. “In the beginning, we were like, ‘Ok, how do we sing in a way where our voices flow completely together?'” says Valeria. “But we started practicing and singing to the point where now,...

For sisters Keisha, Fiona, and Fiorella Sanchez, music is something that has always been a part of their lives. "We come from a family of musicians on both sides," Keisha, the oldest of the siblings, says. The sisters happily recall the childhood holiday shows they'd put on for their family members, singing Christmas carols in both English and in Spanish for hours on end. Yet despite putting on these jam sessions for their family members and receiving formal singing, music, and dance training, the thought of teaming up to pursue their passion never occurred to them - until the Covid-19 lockdown, that is.
"We've always sung together, and we would record covers and stuff, but we never said, 'Oh, let's make the group,' until the pandemic because we were all locked inside and we were like, 'Well, what do we do now," Keisha says. And so,...

Silvana Estrada is still processing her two Latin Grammy nominations. "It's still shocking," she says, recalling when she first found out about the nominations in September. More shocking still was the way she found out. In the middle of her second major tour, the 25-year-old singer and songwriter's 16-hour flight from Madrid ended in an emergency detour in Dallas. She was tired, stressed, and wondering how she would make it to her next stop in LA when her phone rang.
"[My friend] was like, 'Congratulations on your Grammy nominations.' And I was like, 'Oh my God!' And then I lost service, so I spent the next three hours in complete silence," Estrada tells Popsugar with a laugh. So, for three hours, Silvana sat alone in the Dallas airport with no one to talk to and nothing to do except reflect on the trajectory of her career and the journey that...

Bad Bunny leads the 2022 Latin Grammy Award nominations with 10 bids including Album of the Year (“Un Verano Sin Ti“) and Record of the Year (“Ojitos Lindos”), but can he finally win top honors from the academy? Scroll down for the complete list of contenders in all categories.
SEEBillboard charts: Number-one albums of 2022
The Latin Recording Academy has been somewhat ambivalent about Bad Bunny, judging from his track record over the years. He has won four times, but only in urban genre categories. He lost his three previous Album of the Year bids (for “Yhlqmdlg” and “Oasis” in 2020 and “El Ultimo Tour Del Mundo” in 2021) and his previous Record of the Year nom (for “Vete” in 2020). However, Bad Bunny has emerged as the biggest crossover Latin star in the world. “Un Verano Sin Ti” has topped the all-genre, all-language Billboard 200 albums chart for 11 weeks, which is more than any album in six years.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have linked up with celebrated drummer Antonio Sánchez — who helmed the acclaimed percussion-heavy score for Birdman — for a new song, “I Think We’re Past That Now.”
Sánchez’s drumming guides the multi-faceted track, beginning at an off kilter lurch. rising to a monumental arena-rock boom, then settling into an energetic shuffle before one last explosion. Reznor provides lead vocals on the song (and wrote the lyrics), bellowing over Sánchez’s dynamic drums and the song’s bruising blend of industrial synths.
