Mercedes Moné officially debuted for All Elite Wrestling (Aew) on Wednesday night and instantly changed the face of the company’s women’s division.
Moné, whose given name is Mercedes Varnado and is also known for her time in WWE as Sasha Banks, hit the ring in her hometown of Boston to a thunderous reception from the fans in attendance.
“It was unbelievable,” Moné told Variety. “I still haven’t gotten to take everything in yet, but my heart was just pounding out of my chest. Once I heard the beat drop in the music and the ‘CEO’ chants were on the screens, and then they revealed the ‘Mercedes Moné’ name, that eruption was so electric. I felt so cool. I felt like Stone Cold Steve Austin, when fans just lift up all their signs and stand up with their arms raised. I felt so cool. It was the best feeling in the world.

When it comes to serious movies about wrestling, The Iron Claw is a bit unorthodox. During the height of wrestling’s popularity in the late ‘90s, we had two major documentaries on the subject via Wrestling with Shadows and Beyond the Mat. The Wrestler starring Mickey Rourke was serious, but fictional, based loosely on the modern life of Jake “The Snake” Roberts and his contemporaries. The recent Fighting with My Family, meanwhile, was a sensationalized and comedic take on Saraya/Paige’s initial ascent in WWE.
By contrast, The Iron Claw is based on a bitterly true story that has always been considered one of the darkest corners in wrestling history. It has been the subject of several documentaries itself and has long been viewed as a rich resource for a potential Hollywood film. That’s because the rise and fall of World Class Championship Wrestling coincides with the story of the Von Erich family.

WWE’s Nxt won out in the so-called Tuesday Night War against Aew’s “Dynamite.”
According to the Nielsen overnight ratings, Nxt pulled in 921,000 viewers on Tuesday night with 396,000 in the key adults 18-49 demographic. “Dynamite” averaged 609,000 viewers with 346,000 in the demo. While that is a far cry from the numbers seen during the Monday Night Wars between WWE (then WWF) and WCW, it is still a resounding victory for WWE, with Nxt up approximately 7.5% compared to last week’s show.
The two shows do not typically air against each other. Nxt currently runs on Tuesdays on USA Network, while “Dynamite” airs on Wednesdays on TBS. But the Major League Baseball playoffs on TBS this week meant that “Dynamite” needed to shift nights, putting them once again in direct competition with WWE’s developmental show.

Anyone on the roster will tell you how big the All In pay-per-view is for All Elite Wrestling. The show from London’s Wembley Stadium on August 27 has reportedly already sold more than 80,000 tickets. A majority of those seats were bought even before any match was ever announced. The event brings added significance for Saraya, former WWE superstar Paige. In 2018, the popular performer was forced to retire from the ring due to neck injuries. Fast forward to 2022 where a further evaluation got her cleared by doctors to keep the wrestling dream alive. She signed with Aew and now looks to solidify her comeback story by winning the women’s championship before many of her friends and family. Many of them watched her as a teenager paying dues and traveling the world to represent the famed Knight family’s legacy. The 31-year-old’s road to superstardom was told in the 2019 movie Fighting with My Familly.

The WWE is letting its personalities back onto Twitch. The wrestling media company has reportedly reached a deal that will permit its stars to stream on the Amazon-owned service.
Several WWE wrestlers have established themselves as popular creators and streamers. Xavier Woods shares his video game adventures with millions of subscribers on the UpUpDownDown channel, while the WWE star formerly known as Paige reaches more than 230,000 followers on her Twitch account (where she uses her real-life first name Saraya).
Those wrestlers were forced to adjust their creative careers when the WWE prohibited all Twitch activity from members of its talent roster. At the time, WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon sent a letter to wrestlers in which he described their streams as “detrimental” to his company. “I understand if they’re like, ‘you’re wrestling every day and doing shows every day,’ but I’m an injured wrestler,” Saraya said in response to the decision.

Adam Cole and Britt Baker are used to the spotlight as two of the most popular stars in All Elite Wrestling. Yet, opening up their lives outside the ring for new TBS unscripted series Aew: All Access was a different animal. Cameras follow the power couple along with fellow wrestlers Tay Melo, Sammy Guevara The Young Bucks, Saraya, Wardlow, Eddie Kingston, and owner Tony Khan to give viewers an unprecedented peek behind the curtain. During filming, Cole (real name Austin Jenkins), and Baker faced a challenging end of 2022. Cole contemplated if he would ever wrestle again, following two serious concussions in the space of three weeks. This weighed on him physically and mentally as well as his concerned girlfriend. Baker still somehow had to focus on her own career wrestling and then getting off the road to see patients where she’d fill cavities and promote the importance of flossing.
