Netflix kicked off February with news of the streaming service’s 2024 film slate.
The steamer, which landed 18 Oscar nominations this year – including seven for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” – will debut numerous populist films in 2024, including new projects from Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz, Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry, Jenifer Lopez, Millie Bobby Brown, Eddie Murphy, and more.
Well-known directors with movies set to premiere on Netflix this year include Tyler Perry (two titles), McG, Richard Linklater, and Lee Daniels. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld will also make his directorial debut with “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story.”
On the awards front, while it’s too early to tell which projects might pop – and what movies Netflix might acquire for release this year, similarly to how the studio purchased Todd Haynes’ “May December” at the Cannes Film Festival last year – titles to flag include “The Piano Lesson” from Malcolm Washington with Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington,...

Bret McKenzie's hair helmet secret project likely hasn't seen much progress lately, as the comedian/musician seems to be pretty busy these days. Not only is he overseeing the music for the upcoming Muppets Most Wanted, and scripting a Labyrinth-like musical comedy with James Bobin, he's also now working on an animated series for Fox. The Flight Of The Conchords member is developing the cartoon—about a group of Nasa employees working in an “almost-obsolete” space center in Boulder, Colorado—with his co-executive producers, former King Of The Hill writers Tony Gama-Lobo and Rebecca May. Bret McKenzie's got something special for all the ladies in the world (and the gentlemen): The Flight of the Conchords actor is currently developing an animated show for Fox. The show, which McKenzie is co-writing with King of the Hill's Tony Gama-Lobo and Rebecca May, will focus on a "group of employees toiling away at an almost-obsolete Nasa space center in Boulder, Colorado." How wonderful! As long as it doesn't in anyway delay that fairy tale comedy musical we were promised.

Growing up is hard enough, but for the pubescent characters on IFC's animated coming-of-age series, it's downright Out There. Creator and executive producer Ryan Quincy (South Park) partnered with King of the Hill alums Tony Gama-Lobo and Rebecca May for the show, which chronicles the misadventures of small-town misfits Chad Stevens (Quincy) and Chris Novak (Justin Roiland) as they navigate high school, parents and being social outcasts (the Season 1 finale airs April 19). Fred Armisen, Megan Mullally and Linda Cardellini also provide voices. Quincy explains why we should travel Out There....

Some of the writers of underrated King Of The Hill, an unexpectedly sharp animated show about a Texas family in the late '90s, are developing a sitcom for Gary Unmarried's Al Madrigal, a comedian-turned-sitcom star. The show will revolve around a food truck business, of all things, passed down to a man (Madrigal) from his family.
Apparently Madrigal's personal experiences with a family business will inform the show, which is currently in the script stages. Tony Gama-Lobo and Rebecca May of Hill are working with Madrigal on writing episodes.
