The Irish have put up with a lot of bullshit over the years. There’s England. The Troubles. The kittening of the Celtic Tiger. Enya. It’s not been an easy history. And black people, those living in mostly white countries anyway, they’ve put up with a whole bunch of bullshit, too. So if we pretend there’s an iota of depressing truth being bandied about when, in Roddy Doyle’s novel The Commitments, the irrepressible yet wee bit naïve protagonist Jimmy says that the Irish are the blacks of Europe,...

Thin Lizzy’s songs typically addressed badass rock & roll topics like bar fights, jailbreaks and medieval battles. But on Black Rose: A Rock Legend — their ninth LP, released 40 years ago today — the band paid tribute to their Irish homeland with a highly unusual and weirdly touching album-closing epic.
“Tell me the legends of long ago,” Phil Lynott sings over a rolling, waltz-time riff at the beginning of “Róisín Dubh (Black Rose): A Rock Legend,” named for an old Irish song that addresses the country as though it were a lover.

The documentary is backed by Screen Ireland and Eagle Rock Pictures.
The life and music of rock icon Phil Lynott is to be documented in Phil Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away, to be directed by the award-winning Irish filmmaker Emer Reynolds.
The documentary will trace how a young black boy from working class 1950’s Dublin became one of Ireland’s greatest rock stars as the lead singer of Thin Lizzy. Born in Birmingham to a father from British Guiana and an Irish mother, he moved to Dublin as a young child where he lived with his grandparents. He...

Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham has hinted that the Irish rock band may head back into the recording studio this year for the first time in 28 years. The band's original frontman Phil Lynott died in 1986, three years after the release of their last album Thunder And Lightning, since which the band has continued under various lineups but failed to release any new material. "That's the number one question we're getting from people, are you going to record some new material?" Gorham told Billboard, regarding the band's current lineup. "The fans seem to trust this lineup, and I don't blame them." Gorham admitted that although nothing is set in stone, the band are the closest that they have (more)...

Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1952, Moore was a member of Dublin band Skid Row before joining Thin Lizzy in 1973, playing on tracks for the "Nightlife" album. He left after four months, but rejoined four years later and played on the band's "Black Rose" album before going solo once again.
He had a successful solo career, and his accomplished, bluesy playing won plaudits from other musicians.

Rock and blues guitarist Gary Moore has died at aged 58. It was revealed on Planet Rock radio earlier today that Moore was found dead in his hotel room in Spain in the early hours of Sunday morning. No cause of death has been revealed at this time.
Born Robert William Gary Moore in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on April 4, 1952, Moore was a prolific guitar player. Since the late 1960s, Moore contributed to many musical projects and had three spells as lead guitarist in rock band Thin Lizzy playing on their classic album, Black Rose.
Known to many as an exceptional rock guitarist and most famous for his 1979 hit “Parisienne Walkways,” Moore was also a highly respected and talented blues player. Much of his twenty-plus catalogue of solo studio albums and live albums reflect this.

Def Leppard star Joe Elliott is in talks with the founding members of Thin Lizzy to re-record the late Phil Lynott's vocals for a new project. Guitarist Scott Gorham insists he's keen to remaster and remix two or three of the band's classic albums and he wants Elliott to join the band for the sessions.
He tells Guitarist magazine, "I've been talking to the guys (executives) at Universal (about a) deluxe album where you get the original (album) remastered and the second disc will either be the whole album remixed or tracks cherry-picked off for that treatment."
"I'm actually talking to Joe Elliott about going into his studio and doing it there in Dublin. We've been talking about that for a few years and now Universal is on board; it's now a matter of finalizing all the costs to do it."
"We want to get in this year and start the remixes.
