Director Jai Mehta, who is receiving a lot of acclaim for his latest web series ‘Lootere’, has said that he is an actor’s director, in the sense that he believes in jamming with the actors over a scene and see what they can bring to the table outside of the scope of the script.
The series stars Rajat Kapoor, Vivek Gomber, Amruta Khanvilkar, Aamir Ali and others. It follows Rajat Kapoor as the ship captain and his struggle with a criminal legacy of pirates.
Sharing insights on his process of working with the actors, Jai Mehta said: “The process that I follow is something I have learnt from Hansal sir that the reason we’re casting an actor is to see what they can bring to the table. Actors are our immediate collaborators and also the makers of the show along with us.”

Lootere’ director Jai Mehta has shed light on shooting on a ship for the series, revealing that the actor Vivek Gomber shot an intense firing scene with a pulled muscle and a cut on his leg.
Shooting on a ship presented a lot of challenges for the cast and crew, and reflecting on the same, Jai said: “Shooting is very demanding and difficult on a ship. The ships look nice and big but they’re at times claustrophobic and slippery because they’re made of metal and the surface is dewy most of the time.”
“Vivek Gomber pulled a back muscle during a sequence where he was running away while bullets were being fired; also he had to climb a wall but he slipped and cut his shin. We had medics on set and they wrapped up the wound. However, Vivek shot the entire sequence again with that cut on his leg,...

Acclaimed filmmaker Hansal Mehta has talked about his on-set dynamics with his son Jai Mehta, who directed the series ‘Lootere’, and said that their relationship has grown as professionals.
Hansal, the showrunner of ‘Lootere’, said: “Disagreements, as long as they are healthy, are absolutely necessary. This was Jai’s opportunity to shine – to make his own glorious mistakes and shine through his own voice.”
“Doing that, you make mistakes, and you have to own that, along with the brilliance. You have to own your flaws, too. Sometimes my ideas prevailed, sometimes his prevailed, and that’s how you work. That’s a creative collaborative process,” he added.
Hansal said that his relationship with Jai has evolved.
“Our relationship as father and son has grown as professionals rather than the other way around. We spend more time on set than at home, so the collaboration has been more creative and less nepotistic in that manner,...

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta spoke about his “single largest” contribution to son Jai Mehta’s ‘Lootere’. He said that he was there in the role of “somebody who used all the tricks in the Indian filmmaking book.”
Hansal Mehta, the showrunner of ‘Lootere’, said: “The biggest challenge was to make a series like Lootere on such scale within a budget. How does one achieve a story like this with a scale like this without going overboard with the cost, without compromising on the storytelling, and without compromising on the director’s vision.”
“Without it compromising on how Jai wanted to tell the story? My role was primarily to see that Jai’s larger vision did not get compromised because of any constraints and that he can tell the story freely.”
He added: “So I was there in the role of somebody who used all the tricks in the Indian filmmaking book.

Director Jai Mehta has talked about what went into the making of the upcoming thriller series ‘Lootere’. Directed by Jai Mehta, the gripping series follows Rajat Kapoor as the ship captain and his struggle with a criminal legacy.
Mehta said: “We had a process when it came down to setting up tension on screen, we started watching films to understand the shot-taking process and what goes into creating tension on screen; because tension can come in different forms.”
“It can be shown through characters, sound design, camera placement or music so there are lots of ways to bring tension but having 10 characters in one frame, it’s difficult to navigate that tension and make it seem real as well as chaotic at the same time,” he added.
The maker added: “These tense moments are rarely chaotic, they’re more still and quiet so we started going through pictures by photographers...

Lootere(2 episodes, Disney + Hotstar)
Jai Mehta turns out to be quite a chip off the old block, though I doubt Hansal would like to be called a block. Jai’s debut series Lootere, is an assured piece of work with just the right doses of all the ingredients that go into successful storytelling.
Mehta Jr has selected an unusual plot (highsea piracy) and an unexplored location. Somalia looks agreeable through Jai Mehta’s ambitious lenses. This is a series designed for the large screen. The scaling down, however, doesn’t diminish the viewing pleasure.
Set in and around Somalia, Lootere is the story of an Indian-origin entrepreneur grappling with the tense politics of the region while attempting to look into his rather extravagant self-interest. The skilled Vivek Gomber plays a nasty machiavellian businessman in Somalia named Vikrant Gandhi. He wants to not only rule the entrepreneurship of the land but also dominate the local politics.

Director Jai Mehta, who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming streaming show ‘Lootere’, said that the toughest casting to pull off on the show was that of the pirates. The series stars Rajat Kapoor, Vivek Gomber, Amruta Khanvilkar, and Aamir Ali, and presents the story of a ship caught in the web of pirates in international waters.
The right casting plays an important role in bringing alive this mix on screen, and director Jai Mehta revealed the challenges faced during the casting process.
Elaborating on the same, Jai said: “The most difficult parts to cast for were the pirates. We found a few actors from Gujarat who looked like Africans but they were actually Gujaratis. Even for the casting for the Captain’s role, we had a whole process in place. Ultimately, we all believed that we needed to make this look real and believable.”

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta, who serves as the showrunner on the streaming series ‘Lootere’, has heaped praise on music composer Achint Thakkar saying that his music is moody, subversive and never comes across as stereotypical.
Achint has composed the theme song for ‘Lootere’. In the past he has collaborated with Hansal on the hit streaming series ‘Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story’ and ‘Scoop’. The theme song from ‘Scam 1992’ became a viral hit with many Instagram Reels and memes using the title track.
Talking about the collaboration, Hansal Mehta said: “There are multiple elements that drive a thriller – visuals, performance and music. I have collaborated with Achint Thakkar for Scam 1992 and Scoop. He gets mood, pace and story just right. His music is contemporary, moody, subversive and never stereotypical. ‘Lootere’ also needed music that could represent its action, drama, and thrill and Achint has done exactly that.”

‘Lootere’ director Jai Mehta has opened up on the picturesque backdrop of the upcoming action-packed web series ‘Lootere’. He revealed the inspiration for Cape Town as the location came from the veteran producer Mukesh Bhatt.
The show revolves around a ship carrying precious cargo and the threat it faces from Somali pirates. It features an ensemble cast that includes Rajat Kapoor, Vivek Gomber, Amruta Khanvilkar and Aamir Ali.
Jai, who’s better known as acclaimed director Hansal Mehta’s son, said: “We thought of many locations for ‘Lootere’, including Gujarat, and even thought of building sets in Mumbai. But there were no ships available. The team went to Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, Abu Dhabi and even Sharjah to explore further, but we were met with little to no success. There was even a time when we thought of going to Morocco or Egypt.”
