Exclusive: Derek Kolstad, the screenwriter behind the John Wick series, is collaborating with Amazon Studios to develop a live-action feature film based on the iconic Japanese action-horror manga Hellsing.
“Ever since my brother introduced me to the Hellsing manga and anime some years ago, I’ve been obsessed with adapting it,” Kolstad said. “And when Mike Callaghan and his team managed to secure the rights to then partner us up with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Amazon, I mean -damn, dude- this is a dream.”
Written and illustrated by Kouta Hirano and published by Shōnen Gahōsha, Hellsing reimagines Dracula as Alucard, a special agent bound to The Hellsing Organization, under the leadership of Integra Hellsing, great-granddaughter of Abraham Van Hellsing, to aid them in their mission to protect England and the world from vampires, ghouls, and other supernatural threats. The manga also focuses on Hellsing’s newest recruit, a female ex-police officer named Seras Victoria.

Astro Boy may be heading back to the big screen, thanks to Australia’s Animal Logic Entertainment and Japan’s Tezuka Productions, which are plotting a live-action feature adaptation of the iconic manga.
No director is attached to the project, but the producing team, including producer Zareh Nalbandian (of Animal Logic) and exec-producers Jason Lust (of Animal Logic), Mike Callaghan and Reuben Liber (both of Ranger 7 Films), is about to head up a search for writers.
Animal Logic is acclaimed for its special effects work on projects as massive as Happy Feet and Avengers: Age of Ultron, but the studio is also taking a stab at developing its own projects, many of which include a hybrid of animation and live-action. A Betty Boop movie is one such project in the works.

The 1950s Japanese manga Astro Boy has seen several anime series adaptations in the 70s and 80s, but the only feature film version to make the big screen was the lackluster 2009 animated adaptation from Imagi Animation. Now it will be Australia's Animal Logic Entertainment, the studio who worked from beginning to end on the animation for The Lego Movie and also contributed to special effects on The Avengers: Age of Ultron, teaming with Tezuka Productions in Japan to develop a live-action feature adaptation. But as of now there's no director attached to the project, and the writers still need to be found. It's early days, so THR reports this new version of Astro Boy only has Animal Logic's Zareh Nalbandian attached as producer with Jason Lust as Executive Producer, and Ranger 7 Films' Mike Callaghan and Reuben Liber also executive producing. Since the last big screen outing for...

Motion Picture Corporation of America has picked up the film rights to "Prisoner of Denver", a 2004 Vanity Fair article co-written by the late legendary author Hunter S. Thompson and the mag's contributing editor Mark Seal says The Hollywood Reporter.
The article looked at injustice and abuse within Colorado's legal system, specifically focusing on 21-year-old Lisl Auman. Auman was charged with murder and given a life sentence, this despite the crime occurring while she was already in police custody and in the back of a police car.
Auman began a correspondence with Thompson and his unrelenting grass-roots activism helped overturn her sentence in 2005. Thompson called Seal and enlisted his help and soon Seal found himself coming up against skinheads, speed freaks and angry cops in his efforts to pursue the truth.
The article is one of Thompson's last works and the author sadly committed suicide before the case was overturned. The...
