Jr Ntr’s Devara: Part 1 is one of the biggest Tollywood releases of 2024. The posters and promo received a great response in the past. Directed by Koratala Siva, the action thriller also stars Janhvi Kapoor in the lead role. It will mark Janhvi’s debut in the South Indian film industry.
There’s a lot of excitement amongst the audience to watch Devara, just like Pushpa 2 and Kalki 2898 Ad. However, the makers of Jr Ntr’s film have successfully managed to keep plot details under wraps. All we know is it will feature a massive fight sequence by the sea, where people attack each other with swords. Ntr even says in the promo that the sea has witnessed more blood and swords than fish. Well, there’s finally a new update on the film—a song!

MollywoodIn recent times, many female actors like Navya Nair and Meera Jasmine who disappeared earlier, have begun floating back to films not just to play the big sister or mother, but to make their presence felt.It is somehow a comforting moment when Lalu Alex and Manju Warrier, playing father and daughter in Jo and The Boy, talk about her marriage like it is something she has to do having touched 30 years of age. When the film came out, Manju was 36, not far off her screen age. Still, the scene is comforting because it has for the longest time been the forte of men to keep playing the guy just ripe for marriage decade after decade, while women would have long left the field by 30 or would be cast all too unfairly as mothers and grandmothers of men twice their age. But Manju Warrier, a woman actor in her mid-30s,...

CinemaMalayalam films are known for keeping stories realistic on screen. Though not all are free from problematic stereotypes, many have poignantly questioned conventions. Here are our picks.Malayalam films are known for keeping stories realistic on screen. The same also reflects when it comes to portraying romantic love. Though not all of it is free from problematic stereotypes, there are many romances that have poignantly questioned the status quo and have been celebrated. How about the ones that took the turbulent, unconventional path to reach fruition in love? We give you our picks, this Valentine’s Day. Akbar and Ameer (Moothon) The most poignant stretch in Geethu Mohandas’s otherwise generic gangster film comes when Aamir enters the frame. As Akbar slashes his body with a knife, flagging himself as part of a ritual (Kuthu Ratheeb), Ameer, the gorgeous young man, cannot take his eyes off him. Even when Akbar...

MollywoodMalayalam cinema showcased some great films and exceptional performances this year. Here is Tnm’s pick of the best Malayalam movies of 2022.CrisYear 2022 was in some ways a comeback year for new films, which could once again be released in theatres after the rules of physical distancing brought in by the Covid-19 pandemic faded away. The piled-up movies of previous years were released one by one, and new ones were made. Original stories were told and actors took on unconventional roles. Here is Tnm’s pick of the best Malayalam movies of the year. Bhoothakaalam -- Bhoothakaalam was not a typical horror film although it could send shivers down your spine for several long minutes. But at its centre is the theme of a mother-son relationship going through a rough patch. The horrors of the house in fact appear to help bring them together. Revathy, after a long time, had...

Malayalam cinemaShammi Thilakan’s real breakthrough came somewhere during the turn of the last decade, with the entry of new filmmakers and writers.Neelima MenonFor the longest time, Shammi Thilakan lived under the shadow of his legendary father Thilakan. Shammi, a stage artist, made his debut on screen in the Kg George film (Irakal) and struggled to find his space in Malayalam cinema shortly thereafter. In hindsight, that his father was already or well on his way to becoming an established actor might have stalled his chances during the initial phases of his career. In the early 90s, the roles that mostly came his way were those of an antagonist, cop, or yes man – largely one-dimensional and unmemorable. Interestingly, Shammi Thilakan was known more as a voice artist during this period. If his deep baritone fitted Raghuvaran (Vyooham) and Salim Ghouse (Thazhvaram) perfectly, it added heft to the wickedness of...

Review Meera Jasmine and Jayaram play the parents of a teen girl, performed wonderfully by Devika Sanjay.CrisMakal, to jump straight to the point, is the kind of film you can take home and relax with, curled up in bed on a lazy afternoon. It is not going to disturb you, shock you or throw you off your bed. Makal is calm and soothing and almost like a lullaby. It is textbook-sweet but without any cheesiness to gross you out. Sathyan Anthikad, Makal’s director and a veteran of Malayalam cinema, made Achunte Amma 17 years ago, giving you the heartwarming tale of a mother and daughter. Makal is in some ways a grand extension of that, allowing the changes that time has brought to the ways of life, and still being a dear film. Devika Sanjay plays the makal – the daughter – in the film to Meera Jasmine and Jayaram. Mother...

CinemaFrom an emotional role in ‘Soorarai Pottru’ to a comical one in ‘Mookuthi Amman’, Urvashi has stolen the show in several recent Ott releases.Fahir MaithuttyUrvashi in Mookuthi Amman and Soorarai PottruWhen Varane Avashyamundu released earlier this year in theatres, most of the movie’s posters featured the four lead actors – Suresh Gopi, Shobana, Dulquer Salman and Kalyani Priyadarshan. The movie was promoted as the comeback vehicle for Suresh Gopi and Shobana. Urvashi played only an extended cameo in the movie. But perhaps the best scene of the movie was when Urvashi sits opposite Kalyani Priyadarshan in a restaurant, holds her hands and says, “This wedding will not happen. I thought my son was like me. But he’s like his father. It’s better that you don’t come into our family”. While passing a subtle yet important message in Varane Avashyamundu, director Anoop Sathyan perhaps could not have...

Film CommentaryWe've seldom seen an older mother character having a romance despite the disapproval of her offspring - and have it portrayed positively. Sowmya RajendranMajor spoilers ahead Neena is beautiful, we're told multiple times. She's single and has the habit of falling in love frequently. When a new neighbour moves in, Neena is attracted to him and thus begins a romance. You can't be blamed if you were imagining a 20-something woman actor in the role, given how our cinema has consistently made romance the right of the young. However, in Varane Avashyamund, Anoop Sathyan's debut film, the heroine is a middle-aged single mom who has an adult daughter. And what's more, Neena doesn't think there's anything wrong with her pursuing the romance despite the daughter's disapproval. Neena (Shobhana) and Nikki (Kalyani Priyadarshan) rather remind one of Vanaja (Urvashi) and Achu (Meera Jasmine) from Achuvinte Amma, Sathyan Anthikkad's (Anoop's father) 2005 film.

MollywoodThese songs are coined without much thought, and it shows.Meera PKHow do you define the outrageous lyric? These songs are coined without much thought, the only intention being to rustle up a rhyme. They will be as memorable as they are offensive to the ears and mind, and often just as hilarious... Mostly unplanned. Here, we bring you a list of such hapless attacks on the rhyming word in the name of creativity in Malayalam cinema. In exactly this order. 1. ‘Pineapple penne chocolate piecey’ (Vellinakshathram) In this high-octane dance number in the rain featuring Prithviraj and Karthika, the hero begins by equating her with pineapple and chocolate, begging her to spare him the agonising twist of love. And yes, the rest of it is just as hilarious. 2. ‘Chocolateu poleyulla ee urunda meni’ (Chocolate) What’s our lyricist’s obsession with chocolate women? And poor Prithviraj is yet again the bearer of this unbearable song.

Both these films were shot on shoestring budgets but were noticed for their offbeat treatment of the themes. Lenin’s film Prem Nazirine Kanmanilla caught the eye for its title.

KollywoodLeave aside the plot, what happened to Hema from 'Sandakozhi'?Anjana ShekarSeated inside the movie theatre, waiting for the opening credits to roll for Vishal’s Sandakozhi 2, I had an important question to ask. Why this sudden surge of sequels in Tamil cinema? Especially for a 13-year-old film that ended on a positive note? Perhaps filmmakers are running out of new ideas? The loud music that announced “Vishal 25” interrupted my line of thought and I decided to keep this question for another day, while waiting to watch another “2”. Vishal’s Sandakozhi 2 released on Thursday to coincide with Ayutha Puja. The prequel that came out in 2005 had Vishal, Meera Jasmine, Rajkiran and Lal in lead roles and went on to become a major hit that year. MollywoodLike Abrid Shine's previous outing, the film isn't plot driven but is made of a series of episodes and moments that capture the spirit of the subject at hand.Sowmya RajendranThe adjective 'nice', English teachers have been saying for long, should be thrown out of the window. 'Nice', they say, is a boring adjective that doesn't say much. And yet, it's this word that describes Poomaram best. This is a nice film with nice people and nice moments. The film doesn't aspire to rise above this and at times, the niceness may get boring. But with so many vibrant faces on screen, so many moments that trigger nostalgia, you get interested once again even if the film loses you in parts. Abrid Shine's Poomaram is nearly a faithful documentary of the Mahatma Gandhi youth festival in Kerala. Like the director's previous outing Action Hero Biju, the film is not plot driven but is made of a series of episodes and moments that capture the spirit of the subject at hand. While the wait for a conflict might test the patience of many, the film manages to be engaging in spurts. There are few campus movies that have authentically captured the energy of young people without falling back to stereotypes and slapstick humour. It's an unusual choice for the debut of a star son. Kalidas Jayaram doesn't get a fight scene or a heroine. He doesn't even have too many lines in the film – in fact, nobody does. The story happens entirely in the backdrop of the festival itself. So we're treated to mime performances, dances, music, and mimicry, not just in flashes but as substantial parts of the narrative. Abrid doesn't hurry up the storytelling; art isn't the peg on which he wishes to hang a romance or a comedy. The story is simply that of what goes on in such a festival, the passion behind it, the competitive spirit, and the victories and triumphs. Neeta Pillai, who plays Irene, the young woman who leads her college St Teresa's, and Gautam (Kalidas Jayaram), who is the chairperson of his college committee at Maharaja's, don't exchange a word. While they are propped up as the captain of their respective ships, the others too get equal importance. There's quite a bit happening on screen which stays unsaid, which we need to understand purely through the lens of Gnaanam's camera. Take, for instance, the mousy young lady who has a crush on Gautham. He hardly notices her glances and she never says it out aloud but we know what she feels because we've experienced it too. Putting that smile of recognition on the audience's faces is what works best in Poomaram. In such films which revolve around a competition, we're usually shown one team playing dirty to win over the others. Abrid artfully skips the cliche and avoids giving us a strawman villain. The audience isn't handed a team to root for – and though this dilutes the drama on screen, it complements the message with which the film comes to a close. Joju George, who appeared as a cop in Action Hero Biju, gets an opportunity once again to entertain in khaki and he doesn't disappoint. One does wish, however, that Abrid would get out of his penchant for taking potshots at queer identities. The sequence at the station would have worked just as well without needing to include a case about a man with an effeminate voice and his "phone lover". The film features a host of real life performers (Meera Jasmine and Kunchacko Boban make cameo appearances as well) and proceeds at a languid pace. While the songs are pleasant enough, they are one too many and the picturization looks artificial and old-fashioned in some portions. The politics, fights (the one about the Mohiniattam contest is hilarious), flirting, disappointments, tension, and victories form a mosaic that's reasonably entertaining. I wasn't very convinced about the "message" heavy ending. It was...yes, there is such a thing as too nice. But I suppose Poomaram couldn't have ended any other way. Nice. Disclaimer: This review was not paid for or commissioned by anyone associated with the film. Neither Tnm nor any of its reviewers have any sort of business relationship with the film's producers or any other members of its cast and crew.

Film: "Inga Enna Solludhu"; Cast: Vtv Ganesh, Meera Jasmine, Santhanam, Srinath, Pandiarajan, Swarnamalya, Mayilsamy, Silambarasan and Andrea Jeremiah; Director: Vincent Selva; Rating: *
It's brave on the part of producer-turned-actor Vtv Ganesh to play the lead in a film which is more or less a semi-autobiography based on events from his own life.
It is not because Ganesh plays the lead that "Inga Enna Solludhu" is unarguably boring, but because it is a shoddily written story that fails to entertain. Ganesh occupies the frame from the opening scene and with little honesty he proves that this project is very dear.

Producers are barking with a loud cry as they have had a lot with Meera Jasmine. The actress has been vividly troubling up her producer with her irregularity. It looks like ‘Pen Singam’ was the only film that kept her at the right place. According to the sources, she had regularly attended the schedule and more punctual.
But why she is so pathetic in her gestures in spite of possessing the greatest talents? She had lost the opportunity of being casted in Shankar’s ‘Anandha Purathu Veedu’. Her other project ‘Mambatiyan’ is fast on the heels of completion and she enacts the role of Saritha in original version.
But the actress hasn’t reported anything on this reports as she keeps herself away from the controversial issues.

The actress had apparently replied saying that I have great respect for Love. But it’s not like falling in love with a person today and again with another person by next year. (Oops! Are you listening to this Nayanthara?)...

When most of the recent works penned by Kalainyar M. Karunanidhi weren’t visualized with perfection over the screens, director Bali Srirangam makes sure that ‘Pen Singam’ surpasses on such technical arenas with excellence.
‘Pen Singam’ is produced by N. Jaya Murugan under the banner of J. Nandini Arts featuring Udhay Kiran, Meera Jasmine, Richard, Radha Ravi and ‘Thalaivaasal’ Vijay in lead roles. With major portion of the film being canned in Chennai, a stupendous stunt sequence of climax was shot across the outskirts of Chennai near the ports of Ennore.
Apart from these leading actors, Vivek, Riteesh M.P, Sudarsana Sen, Rambha, Rohini, Sriranjini, Vaagai Chandrasekar, Nizhalgal Ravi, Madan Pop, O.A.K. Sundar and many others have performed prominent roles.
Art Director Sagu had erected grand sets for a song that features choreographer-actor Raghava Lawrence and Lakshmi Rai shaking legs together. P.C. Sriram’s assistant Vijay Ragav has cranked the camera.
