Chance the Rapper has filed a lawsuit against his former manager, Pat Corcoran, for allegedly exploiting his position, demanding kickbacks, and damaging the musician’s reputation, The Chicago Tribune reports.
The lawsuit was filed on February 19th in Cook County court in Illinois. It arrives about two months after Corcoran filed his own lawsuit that not only claimed Chance the Rapper — real name Chancelor Bennett — owed him $2.5 million in unpaid expenses and commissions, but that Chance’s highly anticipated 2019 debut album, The Big Day, was a rushed job, which led to poor reviews,...

MGM has delayed “Respect,” the Aretha Franklin biopic starring Jennifer Hudson, by seven months from Jan. 15 to Aug. 13 in the latest shuffle of a major title amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
The studio also announced Tuesday that it has removed “Tomb Raider 2,” starring Alicia Vikander, from its March 19 release date.
“Respect,” titled after Franklin’s 1967 hit, had originally been scheduled to be released in August of this year but was shifted at the start of the pandemic to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. Hudson, who won a supporting actress Oscar for “Dreamgirls,” was personally selected for the role by Franklin before Franklin died in 2018 at the age of 76.
Franklin won 17 Grammys, starting with “Respect” in 1968 and “Chain of Fools” in 1969. The film, directed by Liesl Tommy, also stars Forest Whitaker as C.L. Franklin, Marlon Wayans as Ted White, Mary J. Blige as Dinah Washington and Tituss Burgess as Rev.

Jennifer Hudson commands r-e-s-p-e-c-t in this first-look footage of the singer/actress in character as Aretha Franklin for MGM’s upcoming biopic Respect.
In the brief teaser, Hudson-as Franklin, in glittery gold gown, is shown backlit on stage as those first instantly recognizable words – ‘What you want baby I got it” – tear through the empty auditorium. Though only 44 seconds long, the clip suggests that Hudson does a very fine Aretha impression while infusing at least a little of her own singing style into the interpretation.
The feature film (not to be confused with Nat Geo’s upcoming Genius: Aretha series starring Cynthia Erivo) follows the rise of Franklin’s career from singing as a child in her father’s church’s choir to international superstardom.
Directing will be Liesl Tommy, with a script by Tracey Scott Wilson. Producing are Scott Bernstein, Harvey Mason Jr., with exec producers Stacy Sher, Sue Baden-Powell,...

Following Aretha Franklin's tragic passing at age 76 from pancreatic cancer on Aug. 16, Jennifer Hudson — who was previously tapped by the Queen of Soul herself for the role — reportedly wants to get the Aretha biopic on the big screen Asap. "Jennifer is hoping to speed up the project before another production gets green-lit," an insider told In Touch in the magazine's latest issue, on newsstands now. "She thinks this could be another Oscar-worthy performance for her, and she doesn't want anyone to steal her thunder!" In January of this year, record producer Clive Davis confirmed that a movie based on Aretha's 1998 memoir, Aretha: From These Roots, was in the works and Jennifer, 36, had already been tapped for the coveted part. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) "[Jennifer] stops any and every show she's in. Her voice is truly incredible. When they ask, 'Where's the next Aretha? Where will the next Aretha come from?...

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, director of Intacto, 28 Weeks Later, and Intruders, has been selected to helm Haunted, a new adaptation of Henry James' The Turn of the Screw, according to Deadline. This is apparently a passion project for Steven Spielberg, and is based on a script by Chad Hayes and Carey Hayes (The Conjuring). Roy Lee, John Middleton and Scott Bernstein are on board as producers. Fresnadillo is one of Spain's most successful filmmaking exports: Intacto a cult favourite among cinemaphiles, a strange and surreal film (in Spanish and English) about luck and gambling; 28 Weeks Later was a well-made film and much better than the usual sequels to popular genre films. He has been busy of late working in television, directing the pilot for...

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the writing and directing pair behind 2014's "Starry Eyes", Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer, will both direct the "Mama" sequel and rewrite the current Mama sequel draft. As reported shortly after the original film opened, plans are underway to turn Andres Muschietti's "Mama" into a horror franchise. TheWrap, meanwhile, reports that star Jessica Chastain is not expected to return. Whether that means that the film will recast her Annabel character or tell a wholly separate Mama story remains to be seen. Universal Pictures brings forth some good news and some bad news regarding the status of horror sequel Mama 2. First and foremost, Starry Eyes directors Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch have been brought in to rewrite the script and ultimately direct the follow-up, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
There’s a caveat, though; The Wrap notes that Oscar-nominated actress Jessica Chastain may not reprise her role in the embryonic sequel, after starring opposite Game of Thrones alum Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Annabel in the 2013 sleeper hit. Bearing in mind how the events of Mama unfolded, Chastain opting out of the follow-up really makes a lot of sense in the grand scheme of things; her character may have survived the supernatural ordeal, but at least her absence paves the way for Widmyer and Kolsch to explore different creative avenues around the titular entity.
A prequel, or perhaps some form of standalone story? It’s too soon to tell.

Folks, we have a new frontrunner in Best Picture. Over the weekend, the 27th annual Producers Guild Awards were given out and The Big Short pulled the upset, taking the illustrious Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. The Producers Guild of America (or PGA) are the best guild when it comes to forecasting Oscar, so the odds now favor the Academy Awards citing The Big Short in Picture, as opposed to Spotlight, the previous frontrunner. It’s a bit of a surprise, but perhaps one we should have seen coming, frankly. The more you think about it, the more sense it makes. Basically, if you go by PGA history, the winner here is what wins with Oscar. The Producers Guild of America announced on Tuesday its slate of nominees for the best films of 2015, and once again, this awards season is proving divisive, based on the eclectic mix of movies recognized by the guild -- and those that were surprisingly snubbed.
Unexpected honorees included "Ex Machina" and "Sicario," two films released earlier this year to critical acclaim, but which have been absent from most awards season chatter until now. Other populist fare represented on the PGA's nomination slate included the hit "Straight Outta Compton," as well as apocalyptic flick "Mad Max: Fury Road," which is proving itself a strong contender to muscle its way into a Best Picture Oscar nomination as it continues to snatch statuettes and nominations.
As with most awards, there were bound to be some glaring omissions, but the biggest one of all may be "Carol," which failed to earn one of the PGA's 10 Best Film slots,...
