When Jonathan Majors was a student at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, he taped a photocopied black and white headshot of Oscar-winning actor, director and activist Sidney Poitier on his wall.
“That’s the thing about Sidney, a lot of people know him from all his beautiful film work, but this is a theater-trained actor, that’s how I got to know him,” Majors tells Variety of the impact Poitier had on his career. “That’s why he was up in my dorm room — because I didn’t know anything about film — I just knew this man played Walter Lee [Younger from ‘A Raisin in the Sun’] on Broadway — the Hamlet, the King Lear of the African American canon.”

Shortly after Microsoft concluded the Kinect-powered, Live TV segment of their Xbox One reveal last month, company representatives began offering conflicting statements in regards to how the next-gen console would handle used games. Eventually, Microsoft’s PR department began dodging the pre-owned question altogether by using a “we will tell you about it later” response, but that statement was quickly overshadowed by a disturbing report from McV.
The unconfirmed report stated that Microsoft was planning to fundamentally alter the relationship between the company and their customer base with a new Digital Rights Management (DRM) system. Citing retailers who were supposedly briefed by the platform holder, the rumored plan would put Microsoft in a position of total control over the entire Xbox One pre-owned games market by using DRM to strip all of the intrinsic value from physical media after it was purchased by consumers.

There is either a couple of football fans or Jerry Maguire/Moneyball with this year’s most liked unproduced screenplay. Close to 300 hundred film executives provided with the Black List creators a top ten of their favorite screenplays of the year and the consensus first overall pick (with 65 votes) comes from the recently featured in Variety (10 Screenwriters to Watch 2012) tandem of Rajiv Joseph & Scott Rothman and their drama which has nothing to do with enlisting in the armed forces. Draft Day – about the day in the life of a fictitious Buffalo Bills Gm appears to currently be in turnaround — which only means I expect to see this greenlight perhaps a little later than sooner – worth noting: top spot almost guarantees that the film will indeed go into production (2006, 2010 and 2011 are the exceptions.) Among the more alluring logline subjects we find on the list, I’d be keen on reading the...
