New York City is set to honor Wu-Tang Clan in a big way for the 30th anniversary of their seminal debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Not only has Mayor Eric Adams declared November 9th as Wu-Tang Day, but the Empire State Building will be lit up in the group’s signature black and yellow colors.
Released on November 9th, 1993, 36 Chambers was an instant classic as the group of nine rappers — RZA, Gza, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killa, Inspectah Deck, U-God, and Masta Killa — came together to spit hardcore rhymes over kung fu movie samples and hard-hitting snares on songs like “Protect Ya Neck” and “C.R.E.A.M.”
Earlier this year, RZA wrapped up the final season of his Hulu series, Wu-Tang: American Saga, documenting the rise of Wu-Tang Clan, which he discussed in an interview with Consequence. The group’s mastermind is currently celebrating the...

Always one to balk in the face of convention, RZA this fall will turn the orchestral concept of “chamber music” — small ensembles playing ornate works — into “chambers music”: a symphony orchestra interpreting Wu-Tang Clan’s blockbuster 1993 debut Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) live onstage. The performances will take place at New York City’s Gramercy Theatre on Nov. 7, 8, and 9 — the last date of which marks the album’s 30th anniversary. The gigs are billed with a mouthful of a title: “36 Chambers of Shaolin and a Ballet Through Mud.” On Instagram,...

"Wu-Tang: An America Saga" may be bidding fans farewell after an impressive three-season run, each full of exciting hip-hop misadventures, but the story isn't ending without one last mind-blowing lap. The hit biopic drama, which made its splashy debut back in 2019, kicked off its third and final season on Hulu on Feb. 15, jumping to Wu-Tang Clan's wild success years after the big basement flood that almost ruined their solo albums. As the crew try to ride out their five-year plan - orchestrated by leader Bobby, aka RZA (Ashton Sanders) - the downsides of money, power, and fame test their will to stick together.
Fans of "Wu-Tang: An America Saga" are certainly sad to see the imaginative, truth-inspired hip-hop series come to an end, but the cast - which includes Sanders, Shameik Moore (Sha Raider/Raekwon), Siddiq Saunderson (Dennis Coles/Ghostface Killah), Tj Atoms (Ol' Dirty Bastard), Dave East (Method Man...

Journalist Jonathan Abrams spent the last four years compiling an enlightening, entertaining, and deeply researched history of hip-hop. Abrams traces the music’s humble beginning in the Bronx and DIY block parties to some of the most popular music in the world today. In this exclusive excerpt from “The Come Up: An Oral History of the Rise of Hip-Hop,” Abrams tells how the infamous 1977 New York City blackout helped electrify a sound and cultural force.

“Cut Throat City” marks RZA’s third directed feature film, and he says it’s the project he feels the most confident in as a filmmaker.
“I actually do think I found my voice,” the founding member of rap supergroup Wu-Tang Clan tells Variety. RZA, whose real name is Robert Fitzgerald Diggs, previously helmed 2012’s martial arts-western “The Man With the Iron Fists” and 2017’s romantic drama “Love Beats Rhymes.”
“So, the third feature really for me is what I would call the consolidation piece. I feel concrete in my style of storytelling,” he says.
The action film, set in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans, stars Shameik Moore as Blink, a college-educated aspiring comic book artist who, along with several friends, becomes entangled with a local criminal (played by Tip “T.I.” Harris) and is tasked with pulling off a dangerous heist. Eiza González, Ethan Hawke, Kat Graham and Wesley Snipes also star.

“Wu Tang: An American Saga,” created and written by the RZA and Alex Tse, depicts the early days of the Wu-Tang Clan in 1990s New York. Hulu renewed the scripted series for a second season in January.
But the end of its 10-episode first season had many fans wondering, “Whither U-God?,” a member of the rap collective since its inception (real name Lamont Hawkins), who had yet to make an appearance. Fans can wonder no more; RZA confirmed to Variety exclusively that U-God will be depicted in the show’s sophomore season.
“Yes, he’s signed on for Season 2. He always was going to be part of it,” said RZA, adding that U-God has been consulting on the show.
In 2018, U-God published “Raw: My Journey into the Wu-Tang,” a memoir on his career with the group, at one point detailing how fractured the rap collective had become.

Wu-Tang Clan ain’t nuthing ta f— with, but both Hulu and Showtime are messing with their story in separate biographical projects this year. Hulu’s “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” is the scripted version to Showtime’s documentary, which is already out, so exactly how accurate to the rap group’s life story will the still-upcoming one be?
That was the first question Friday at the show’s Television Critics Association press tour panel.
“We like to call it a historical fiction,” co-creator, writer and executive producer Alex Tse told reporters. “So, there are things in it that actually happened, there are versions of events, some moving around the timeline — but spiritually it’s very truthful and accurate.”

Based on one of the most influential and consequential groups in hip-hop history, Hulu’s “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” is inspired by “The Wu-Tang Manual,” The RZA’s first written introduction to the philosophy and history of hip-hop’s original dynasty; the “Tao of Wu,” the second philosophical book, and the true story of formation of the Wu-Tang Clan.
Set in early 1990s New York City, at the height of the crack cocaine epidemic, the show tracks the Clan’s formation, a vision of Bobby Diggs aka The RZA, who works to bring together a dozen young, black men that are torn between careers in music and lives of crime, but eventually rise to become the unlikeliest of American success stories.

Sacha Jenkins’ documentary lets the Wu-Tang Clan speak for themselves, as it should, considering all the surviving members are eager participants. Starting with the simple assertion that the Staten Island-born hip-hop group was named after the best — the best “sword style,” as RZA puts it — and became the best rap brotherhood there ever was, “Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men” chronicles every meaningful beat of the group’s ongoing career. And they do it as they’ve done just about everything: together.
RZA, ever the frontman, introduces each member over the course of a zig-zagging 20-minute opening. There’s Ghostface Killah, “the most dangerous villain”; Method Man, who always had the best hooks; Raekwon, the “eloquent” chef of the streets; U-God, who RZA notes “always had an aggressive violence” to him; Inspectah Deck, who “saw everything”; the 2007 addition and “slang master” Cappadonna; the man who “through his realness” became Masta Killa; Gza,...

Sony Pictures is in early development of a biopic about the late rapper Ol’ Dirty Bastard with his cousin and Wu-Tang leader RZA attached to produce.
Sony had no comment on the project, which does not have a director or actors attached. RZA has an extensive resume in Hollywood as an actor in “Californication” and “American Gangster” and director of “The Man with the Iron Fists” and “Cut Throat City,” starring Wesley Snipes and T.I.
Ol’ Dirty Bastard was born as Russell Tyrone Jones in 1968. He took the stage name Ol’ Dirty Bastard, also known as O.D.B., from the 1980 martial arts film “Ol’ Dirty and the Bastard” and helped found the rap collective Wu-Tang Clan in Staten Island with his cousins RZA and Gza along with Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God and Masta Killa.

Og Wu-Tang Clan member U-God wants his group to know He ain't nothing to f*** with in court -- he says the Wu's been screwing him out of revenue for years, so now he's gotta sue. In the docs filed in NYC, U-God says he's contributed to about 170 tracks for the group since its inception in 1993 ... but says he hasn't been getting his share of royalties off 12 Wu-Tang albums, for at least the last 6 years.

Wu-Tang Clan have been talking about it for a while, and now it looks like a reality: the legendary rap group's 20th anniversary album, "A Better Tomorrow," finally has a release date, and right in the nick of time. Warner Bros. Records wild drop the set on Dec. 2 this year... so at least now it won't be out on their 21st anniversary. RZA, Gza, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa, and Cappadonna will all be present and accounted for on the set. In a very corporate-y statement, Wu-Tang had this to say in a release: "Wu-Tang Clan is excited to join the Warner family of esteemed artists. After 20 years in the business with different label outlets, we are delighted to be amongst a team of industry professionals who understand our unique artistry and will help spread it to the masses unadulterated. RZA and his brother Divine...

The Wu-Tang Clan producer and rapper has written Destiny Bends as a tribute to Paul Walker, who was killed in a car crash last weekend
• Fast & Furious 7 to go ahead despite death of star Paul Walker
The RZA, producer and rapper with hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan, has written a track to commemorate Paul Walker, the Hollywood actor who was killed in a car crash on Saturday.
Destiny Bends features the RZA (real name Robert Diggs) beginning "I want to dedicate this song to my friend Paul Walker", with soul artist Will Wells singing the rest of the ballad, co-written by the pair and Diggs's two sons. Diggs starred with Walker in Brick Mansions, an action remake of Luc Besson's District 13 that is set for release in 2014, and the song recalls their bonding on set. "Thanks for the time and the smiles you shared with me", run one passage of the lyrics.

Before Shawn Corey Carter picked a stylized version of the word "Jehova" (J-Hova, "Hov") for a nickname and well before Kanye West decided to shed his "slave name" in favor of his "God name," "Yeezus," there was U-God.
Born Lamont Jody Hawkins, the Staten Island rapper with the distinctly rugged voice took his place in rap history in Wu-Tang Clan, the legendary group credited with transforming rap and bringing a street sound to new levels of popularity.
"Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)," the group's debut album, turns 20 years old this November, giving U-God plenty of time to reflect and build upon two decades of experience in the rap game. On Tuesday, the Staten Island rapper is releasing "Keynote Speaker," an album that features Method Man, Inspectah Deck, Gza, RZA and more. Music biopics come and go, but this spring minds were blown when the always awesome Michael K. Williams was cast as Ol' Dirty Bastard in the film "Dirty White Boy." Of course, any movie involving Odb has to include the Wu-Tang Clan, and the idea of trying to find actors to fill those roles would be a mind-boggling challenge. But likely, the filmmakers don't have to worry about that.
“[We] have no desire to cast any actors as the Wu-Tang,” Williams told the New York Daily News (via Shadow & Act). “We need all hands on deck.” The paper goes on to add that we can "expect to see" RZA, Gza, Method Man, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah in the film along with other members like Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa and Cappadonna. So in short, it will be Michael K. Williams as Odb hanging out with actual Wu-Tang Clan, which is basically...

Wu-Tang have some "Legendary Weapons" up their sleeves. The new collaborative project from the equally legendary rap troupe is scheduled to drop July 26, and has the promise of executive production from RZA, the band backing of Brooklyn's The Revelations and a high number of contributions from Ghostface Killah. A released describes the 14-track "throw-back sound" set as being "inspired by classic soul and kung fu imagery," neither of whcih are surprises coming from these guys. Check out the trailer that dropped today for the upcoming Wu-Tang documentary, Wu-Tang Revealed, directed by the Gza. There have been other documentaries, but it’s clear that they are all devastatingly sub-par based on this trailer alone. (Be sure to watch until the very end for an old Odb clip.) Never before have we been able to see such an intimate portrait of one of the greatest musical groups of all time. Of course there is going to be plenty of drama – several of the group’s members are notoriously fiery. Hot tempered U-God can be seen bickering with Raekwon in the trailer as Inspectah Deck eats pancakes in the background. It’s already a classic based on that clip alone! It looks like the documentary will also feature in-depth interviews with the RZA, Method Man, and hopefully the other members. The Gza has access to the Wu like no one has before,...

There are plenty of reasons why the Wu-Tang Clan is the greatest hip-hop collective in the history of the genre. Their beats (mainly programmed by mastermind the RZA) are totally sick, their microphone skills are always on point (even the weakest members of the Clan are top-shelf spitters) and their use of imagery and pop culture make them a cultural force that has allowed them to infiltrate just about every corner of the entertainment industry.
But when you get right down to it, their nicknames certainly don't hurt them either. The main members of the Wu-Tang Clan have some of the greatest rap names ever put together, most of them simultaneously explaining exactly who that person is and also creating an air of mystery. When you hear the name Raekwon the Chef or Ghostface Killah, you know exactly what you're going to get from either one of those individuals. Not...

Although Raekwon, Method Man and Ghostface Killah are putting out the Wu Massacre album together, you shouldn't consider the trio a group — their group will always be the Wu-Tang Clan.
"We're not doing this to win. We're not doing this to bring Wu-Tang to the forefront. We're not doing this to save the group. We're a part of the group," Method Man said recently in New York. "This album could have been done by Deck, U-God and Gza. Either/or, it's still Wu-Tang. The bottom line with this LP, it was something fans always requested. It's like, what else was we doing? It was a given. Hopefully, we can all get back in the...

New York — Ol' Dirty Bastard was a larger-than-life character. Now, the Wu-Tang Clan rapper has a eulogy that's as extravagant as he was with the documentary "Dirty: One Word Can Change the World."
The long-in-the-making project was finally released as a straight-to-dvd set Tuesday. To celebrate the project, ImageNation presented a screening at the National Black Theatre in Harlem last night. Odb's mother, Cherry Jones, and other family members attended the intimate affair.
"Dirty," directed by Odb's cousin Raison Allah, set out to answer the question: Who was Dirty? The charismatic and often-troubled rapper went by as many monikers as there were members of the Wu, from Big Baby Jesus to Osirus to Ason Unique. Throughout the 90-minute project, all the members of the Clan, Wu affiliate...

Our top section is called "Don't Sleep," and that's a motto that Gucci Mane has lived by for the past two years. In 2009 alone, he's had about 200 of his songs on mixtapes, and none of them were his bells-and-whistles single "Spotlight," which just hit the Net on Monday. The track features Usher and finds Gucc in a zone he knows all too well. No, not his 'hood, Atl Zone 6 — the club. We're gonna give you a synopsis of his three latest street CDs (not including The BurrPrint [The Movie 3-D], which came out last week, or the upcoming Halloween release Fright Night). And right after Gucc, be sure to see how the RZA feels about Raekwon, Ghostface and Method Man making a joint album.

Having dispatched the Orlando Magic in five games, the Los Angeles Lakers are the 2009 NBA Champions. Kobe Bryant finally won without the help of Shaquille O’Neal (just like Jay-z hoped he would), and the team will be celebrating with a parade in Los Angeles this afternoon. All through the playoffs, it was a familiar-looking Lakers team, and not because they resembled any of the past championship clubs. Rather, they looked and played a lot like the Wu-Tang Clan. Don’t believe me? Check this out:
» Kobe Bryant is RZA: The most talented and controlling member of the team (and also the richest). Are they both a little bit crazy? Sure. Doesn’t it just make us love them more? Definitely. Plus, both Kobe and RZA are friendly with gritty New York City film directors (Kobe & Spike Lee, RZA & Jim Jarmusch).
