In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Anouk's The Dark and Thee Wreckers' No Place Like Home, both by Rosto A.D. Rosto A.D. is a Dutch animator and director whose work might not be that well known, but who deserves more consideration. For this Sound and Vision I want to highlight two music videos he has made, that show different sides of his craft. First up there is the music video for No Place Like Home for the band Thee Wreckers. This is a pure Rosto-project, through and through. To summarize Rosto's career very quickly: as an animator, artist and musician he came up with a sort of bible to...

Paris-based arthouse outfit Autour de Minuit, producer of Oscar-winning toon short “Logorama,” will produce toon feature “Spitsbergen” and medium-length “Return to Nix,” both to be directed by Suzie Templeton, who won as Academy Award and Annecy Cristal for”Peter & the Wolf”). “Spitsbergen”marks Templeton’s much-awaited feature debut, currently in development.
The news comes as Annecy awarded a Special Jury prize to the Autour de Minuit-produced short “Homeless Home,“ from Spain’s Alberto Vázquez (“Birdboy: the Forgotten Children”), a heady B & W mix of fantasy genre, casual, modern-day dialog and a horror at blood lust and cruelty.
Yesterday, a second Autour de Minuit short, Geoffroy de Crécy’s “Empty Places” – a hypnotic portrait of a world in which humdrum machines continue to function, though human beings have disappeared – took the Festivals Connexion Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes prize, in partnership with the Lumières Numériques & Mèche Courte Award.

Last year I previewed all 33 of the Oscar qualifying animated shorts that were up for consideration for the Academy Awards and this year I have 12 additional shorts to consider and I have found either the full short, a clip, a trailer or an image from all but two of the contending shorts and put them together in this one article. These shorts have all been screened for members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences who will soon vote on the ultimate short list that will be in contention for an Oscar nomination. Last year ten films made the list. Take a look over the next eight pages and see which ones stand out to you. There are a few instances where you may have to click a link to watch a clip and, in one instance, to watch the entire film.

This is the list of 45 animated shorts that the Academy is considering in the Best Animated Shorts category (with links to official sites when I could find them). The Animated, Docs, and Shorts Oscar page is going to be updated piecemeal this week as I work on beating all this information into some form of pundited submission.
Until then, the list. Do you ever try to see the nominees in this category?

★★★☆☆ The Monster of Nix (2011) is an entertaining and quirky existential animation from Rosto, featuring the voices of Terry Gilliam and Tom Waits, and is one of the highlights of the 55th BFI London Film Festival's animation programme. Willy (Joe Eshuis) lives with his grandmother in Nix - a peaceful, secluded community - until a strange, dark force pollutes the world, complete with creepy creatures and scary monsters.

About a month ago, I wrote up info on a Dutch animated short called The Monster of Nix, which was notable for (a) some really wild character designs [1], and (b) the fact that Terry Gilliam and Tom Waits are voicing characters. It kinda flew under the radar, so here's another chance to check it out. A new teaser clip has appeared for the film, and it features the voice of Tom Waits as a very strange bird. Check it out below. The first teaser clip that was released (see the post linked above) didn't look great, but this one has me locked in. I love it. Recapping what we know about the film, artist/director Rosto directs, and The Monster of Nix is an animated musical about Willy, “a troubled boy who fights the destructive force of an all-devouring monster in the village of Nix.” Tom Waits voices Virgil, “a terrifying giant pitch-black swallow,...
