Exclusive: Channel 4 has organized a U.S.-UK student exchange program for its latest project from The Great British Bake Off producer Love Productions.
Working titled School Swap, Love followed seven British students from London’s Elmgreen School as they spent time at Mena High School in Arkansas. Six Mena students traveled in the opposite direction.
The docuseries was filmed late last year and is now in the edit. Channel 4 is planning to broadcast the show at some point in 2024.
Richard McKerrow, Love’s CEO and the executive producer of School Swap, said the idea for the series came from his teenage daughter, who loves Friends and is fascinated by “Americana.”
He told Deadline that the Elmgreen School pupils “sample the reality” of a rural all-American high school, in what is designed to be a “fun cultural romp.” “It’s an entertaining and soulful culture clash,” McKerrow added.

The Great British Bake Off is gearing up for its 14th season. The beloved British baking show drew criticism for some of the challenges of the previous season as well as the seemingly heightened difficulty. To help bring the show back to basics, they’ll reportedly be “scaling back” the production.

Season 13 of The Great British Bake Off (referred to as The Great British Baking Show in the US) aired in 2022. Many of the challenges on the season were found by fans to be overly complicated, and the judging of the contestants’ work was perceived as harsh. There was also a notable backlash over a Mexican-themed episode as it was deemed culturally insensitive, with faux pas including hosts Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding wearing sombreros.

Fremantle has acquired global rights to “The Piano,” the format from Love Productions, makers of “The Great British Bake Off.”
“The Piano,” hosted by Claudia Winkleman, recently launched in the U.K. on broadcaster Channel 4 and is a ratings success. Created by Richard McKerrow, the British version of the format sees talented amateur pianists invited each week to play on public pianos in well-known train stations. Unknown to the performers, acclaimed classical pianist Lang Lang and platinum selling pop superstar Mika are secretly watching and one performer from each train station is invited to perform on one of the world’s most prestigious stages.
The finale that airs March 15, will bring together four pianists at London’s The Royal Festival Hall, where they will showcase their talent in solo performances in front of an audience of thousands.
Fremantle holds the global rights for the format outside of North America.

The Great British Baking Show has become a fan-favorite show in the UK and beyond since it first premiered in 2010. The show’s thirteenth season, which aired in 2022, left a bad taste in viewers’ mouths — no pun intended. Even the show’s executive producer admitted that it was a weak spot.

Matt Lucas is serving up the truth behind his short-lived “Great British Bake Off” hosting gig.
The comedian admitted during the “Deeney Talks” podcast that he viewed the reality competition series as a “pandemic job.” Lucas announced he was parting ways with the beloved Channel 4 show in December 2022 after hosting for three seasons alongside presenter Noel Fielding and judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood.
“I’d never seen the show beforehand and I was not a baker,” Lucas said. “They were just looking for a new host and it came at a time where I had been living in L.A. for seven years and I had just sold my house there and I was thinking about coming back and spending more time with my family and friends.”

The Great British Baking Show Executive Producer Richard McKerrow has held his hands up and admitted that Season 13 of the hit baking competition series was “not our strongest.” McKerrow’s comments come after fan criticism over the 13th season, which aired on Netflix in the U.S. Many viewers found the challenges overly complicated and the judging too harsh. There was also a backlash towards a Mexican-themed episode for being culturally insensitive — the episode featured hosts Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding wearing sombreros. Ahead of Season 14, which begins filming in April, McKerrow spoke with The Media Podcast about the reaction to the 13th season and explained how things will be put right for the upcoming season. “I’d be the first to hold up our hands and say that I feel that the last series was not our strongest,” McKerrow said (via Deadline). “You’ve got to take a look at it and go,...

The Great British Bake Off showrunner Richard McKerrow has admitted that the last series of the show was “not our strongest”.
The cookery competition returned for its 13th series last year, with viewers criticising the complexity of the challenges and claiming that judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith were being too harsh.
In a review of the series opener, The Independent’s Sean O’Grady claimed that “there are too many contestants making too many cakes”. Over 5 million viewers tuned in to watch the series finale, down 2 million from the previous year.
Appearing on The Media Podcast, Love Productions chief executive McKerrow said that the production team had taken criticism about the last series “seriously”.

All things crust come to an end.
Actor and comedian Matt Lucas is leaving as co-host of “The Great British Bake Off” after three seasons on the show, citing scheduling conflicts with his new series “Fantasy Football League” for Sky.
“It’s become clear to me that I can’t present both ‘Fantasy Football League’ and ‘Bake Off’ alongside all my other projects,” Lucas said in a statement posted to Twitter. “So, after three series and 51 episodes, I am cheerfully passing the baguette on to someone else.”
Lucas began co-hosting “Bake Off” (which airs on Netflix as “The Great British Baking Show” in the U.S.) for the 11th season, replacing co-host Sandi Toksvig. He worked alongside co-host Noel Fielding and judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, and in the first two of those seasons, it was under severe Covid restrictions that required the production to remain sequestered together in a Covid bubble.

Sandi Toksvig has stepped down as the host of Channel 4’s The Great British Bake Off after three years.
The presenter, who oversees the baking contest alongside comedian Noel Fielding, is quitting to spend time on other projects, including a new show on adult literacy for Channel 4, titled The Write Offs.
Toksvig was a key ingredient in Bake Off‘s smooth transition from the BBC to Channel 4 in 2017 and the program — which is known as The Great British Baking Show on Netflix in the U.S. — is comfortably the network’s highest-rating brand.
Toksvig said: “When stepping down from a job it is quite common for people to say they are doing so in order to spend more time with their family. Unusually I am departing from The Great British Bake Off so I can spend more time with my other work.
“As my waistline will testify, Bake Off is an all-consuming show.

The Great British Bake Off will remain on Channel 4 in the UK until 2021 after the broadcaster and Love Productions agreed a new two-series deal.
The broadcaster has also commissioned Junior Bake Off for the first time, extending the format for younger contestants and audiences. A younger skewing version previously aired on Cbbc.
The move comes after rumblings at the end of last year that Sky-owned Love Productions was playing hardball over a new deal with rumors that it was considering taking the format to another broadcaster or streaming service – a move that would have been hugely controversial after its move from the BBC.
The tenth season of Bake Off will air on C4 later this year with a further two seasons following that. Junior Bake Off, meanwhile, will run as a 15-part series later this year.
Ian Katz, Channel 4 Director of Programs, said, “Over the last two years...
