Chicago – In the opening moments of Peter Ho-Sun Chan’s “The Warlords,” martial arts superstar Jet Li performs one of his bravest physical feats yet. He breaks into tears. This comes as a bit of a shock, considering Li’s status as one of China’s most formidable onscreen ass-kickers. Yet it’s in keeping with Chan’s uncommonly emotional approach to depicting historical events often drained of humanity.
“Warlords” debuted in China one year before the release of John Woo’s overblown epic “Red Cliff.” Both films purport themselves to be antiwar pictures, yet in the case of Woo’s epic, the expensive spectacle is romanticized to such a degree that it fails to impact the audience on a visceral level. When arrows are shot through the sky, Woo follows the arrows from their point of view, evoking the tone of a video game rather than actual warfare. There...

It’s time for some DVD love so let’s stop talking about nothing and talk about a show that’s about nothing:
Grab ‘Em Right Away
Curb Your Entusiasm: The Seventh Season
Created by: Larry David
Starring: Larry David, Cheryl Hines, Jeff Garlin, Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis Dreyfus & Michael Richards
Why should you buy this? Because it’s the funniest season of this show since they did The Producers season with Mel Brooks. This is a show that’s always been hit-or-miss for me. But when it’s funny it’s side-splittingly hilarious. With Larry David dealing with bringing NBC a Seinfeld reunion episode (a show he and Jerry Seinfeld created together in real life) it’s insane how referential they can get when they want to be. They even reference Michael Richards’ heckling incident that occurred a couple years ago. If you like this show or...

Thursday night I saw the Chinese b.o. juggernaut The Warlords, Peter Chan's breathless $40 million period action epic starring Asian megastars Jet Li, Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro as three blood brothers who fight for the imperial army, which won best film and best director at the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Golden Horse Awards. While the mayhem slows down occasionally to allow some dramatic exposition and a pivotal romance with Jinglei Xu, the movie slams through one bloody battle after another. The three leads are terrific, especially Li, who is a fierce marvel in action, and a powerful, emotive actor. The Warlords is already available on VOD and opens in theaters April 2. Here's the Apple trailer (YouTube is on the jump). I was ...

MADRID -- Bahman Ghobadi's Turtles Can Fly won the 52nd San Sebastian International Film Festival's top honor, the Gold Shell, on Saturday night with an unflinching look at the fear of children surviving on the Iranian-Turkish border. "It impressed all the members of the jury that a film that tells this story was charged with such humanity, poetry and, at times, even humor," jury chairman Mario Vargas Llosa said. Jeff Bridges received his Donostia Lifetime Achievement award at the gala ceremony, broadcast live on Spain's Canal Plus. China's Xu Jinglei won the best director Silver Shell for her A Letter From an Unknown Woman, an adaptation of Stefan Zweig's novel, in an awards ceremony that met the rare approval of local press -- prone to criticize jury decisions -- despite the fact that no Spanish-language film was selected for the main honors.
