He was awarded Knighthood of the British Empire in the 1999 Queen's Birthday Honors List for his services to drama.
He is the Principal of RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, England).
In 1962, at age 24, he was appointed master of music at Chelmsford Cathedral, becoming the youngest cathedral organist in the UK.
He became director of music at King's College, Cambridge in 1974, succeeding
David Willcocks
.
In 1982, he took up the post which he held until retirement in 2001, as principal of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
