The Deauville American Film Festival has set Woody Allen’s A Rainy Day In New York as its opening night movie on September 6. The French premiere is the highest-profile showcase the title will have had to date. It was previously shelved by Amazon in the U.S., which also nixed a four-film deal with Allen, citing comments the director made about the #MeToo movement. Allen then brought a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against the streamer. The Deauville fest selection of the Oscar winning filmmaker’s latest may stoke further debate– but maybe not in France.
A Rainy Day In New York, which we hear is very good, stars Timothée Chalamet and Elle Fanning as a young couple whose weekend get-away turns into a succession of fortuitous encounters and unusual situations. Letty Aronson’s Gravier Productions produces.
Allen is among the pantheon of cherished auteurs in this country, having enjoyed great critical and commercial success.

At an elegant soirée on the terraces of the Hotel du Cap on Friday night, Lionsgate bid farewell to its Motion Picture Group co-chairman Patrick Wachsberger, even bagging chanteuse Jane Birkin to provide a melancholy musical send-off.
Industry executives and talent poured in to the particularly hot ticket to show their support for veteran exec Wachsberger who is exiting the company six years after it merged with Summit Entertainment, which he helped launch in 1993. But he promised he is not retiring, assuring attendees, “There is much I intend to do between Lionsgate and the Pearly Gates.”
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer introduced Wachsberger saying, “We have had a great time together. Patrick has not only contributed a tremendous amount to our company, as you all know, but a tremendous amount to the industry.”

Latest production from the team behind La Famille Bélier.
Paris-based sales company Snd has picked up world sales on French director Hugo Gélin’s London-set Two Is A Family, starring Omar Sy (Intouchables) as a TV stuntman left to bring up an unplanned baby girl on his own.
It is latest production from prolific Philippe Rousselet of Vendome Production, whose recent credits include this year’s breakout hit La Famille Bélier and Tommy Wirkola’s upcoming sci-fi thriller What Happened to Monday?, both of which Snd also sold.
“Reading the script we knew we had an instant classic,” said Rousselet. “There’s no better feeling than finding a gem, polishing it and bringing it to screens.”
Mars Film is also on board as a producer while sister company Mars Distribution will release the film in France.
Pantelion Films has picked up Latin America.
“We’re happy to team up once again with this wonderful team of producers...
