Where They From: Ficarra & Requa and the Privileged Perspective
Cinematic depictions of the ongoing conflict(s) in the Middle East continue to be a touchy subject, particularly for those English language illustrations daring to convey a certain satirical element involving the U.S. presence there. While pleasing everyone is never a possibility, there are several elements about Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot which could have been easily remedied to avoid inarguable ire, namely with its severely miscast supporting actors. Based on the 2011 memoirs of journalist Kim Barker, The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan, this is provocative subject matter made all the more alluring by the self-aware talents of Tina Fey doing her best to subvert our expectations of a white, privileged perspective. Overall, the end product has too many glaring demerits to warrant praise, but as a showcase for a well-rounded serious...

A class action lawsuit against tobacco giant Phillip Morris wrapped up last week with a ten person jury determining that the company should not have to offer Ct scans to smokers. The plaintiffs, a class of Massachusetts smokers, argued that Philip Morris knew cigarettes were dangerous and defective, could have easily made them safer and therefore should cover the costs of tests to assess whether the smokers had developed lung cancer.

Exclusive: American Sniper producer joins Emily Blunt’s ‘Rocky-on-a-bull’ drama, talks new films.
American Sniper producer Andrew Lazar has boarded Emily Blunt drama Bronco Belle as lead Us producer.
As revealed by Screen last week, first-time writer-director Khurram Longi is set to direct the ‘Rocky-on-a-bull’ story about a woman’s quest to become a champion bull-rider.
“Having made American Sniper, another film about the DNA of Americana, I was really drawn to this project,” Lazar told Screen.
“The film is about strong people with strong convictions. The script was undeniable. There is real spectacle in the script so we need to make it in the right way.
Lazar has made first films with the likes of George Clooney, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa and the Wachowskis.
Embankment Films is selling Bronco Belle at the Cannes Marche this week.

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Crazy, Stupid, Love and I Love You Philip Morris) have an obvious talent for both visuals and storytelling. They've definitely been studying their Steven Soderbergh Oceans DVDs and are more than happy to show off all kinds of clever camera angles while classic soul music blares through the speakers. Although some scenes are predictable and by the book, there are few scenes in this movie that feel like a complete waste of time. The lean script doesn't pretend to be anything more than what it is.

The art of con has been committed to the big screen a few times before, with The Sting, Grifters, and Steven Soderbergh's Oceans Eleven, being some notable examples. Now, Focus has come our way, trying it's best to take it's place on that prestigious list. Written and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (I Love You, Philip Morris, Crazy, Stupid, Love), there is no denying that Focus is a slick and stylish affair, but it's clear that Ficarra and Requa are far too interested in fooling the audience with the numerous cons swirling around in this story, and the movie suffers because of it. Seasoned con man Nicky Spurgeon (Will Smith) breaks his cardinal rule when he falls for his protege Jess (Margot Robbie). When she gets too close for comfort, he severs all ties, only for her to come back into his life three years later, now an accomplished femme fatale,...

There are two ways of seeing "Focus": as a slick, derivative con man movie starring a typically debonair Will Smith that channels the labyrinthine schemes and accompanying jubilance found in everything from "Ocean's Eleven" to "Out of Sight" — or as the worst movie yet from Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, the writer-director pair behind "I Love You Philip Morris" and "Crazy, Stupid, Love." It's the latter perspective that makes "Focus" such a letdown for anyone intrigued by the pair's other work. Despite its stylish execution, the movie sags into formula and shows little of the vulgar, edgy sensibilities that made this filmmaking pair worth following in the first place. Ficarra and Requa first gained attention as the screenwriters behind "Bad Santa," which, like "Focus," revolves around the plight of a criminal defined by his routine. In their directorial debut "I Love You Philip Morris," Jim...

As Last Week Tonight host John Oliver notes early in his incredible, 20-minute examination of the global battle being fought over tobacco advertising, the smoking rate in the United States has dropped from 43 percent in 1965 to 18 percent today thanks to strict laws outlawing cigarette ads. With America largely kicking its smoking habit, the tobacco industry has been forced to make up the revenues abroad, leading to court battles in countries like Australia, Uruguay and Togo, one of the 10 poorest nations in the world.
Oliver's takedown also focuses on the extreme...

It's no secret that Ewan McGregor isn't afraid to bare all on the big screen. In fact, his penis has appeared in films such as Young Adam, Trainspotting, The Pillow Book and I Love You Philip Morris, to name a few. And if you've seen one of the aforementioned full-frontal scenes, then you're well aware that the 43-year-old is well-endowed—a fact which Colin Farrell had no trouble pointing out in a recent interview with Nylon magazine. "I don't think Ewan is as proud of his penis as most men who are as well hung would—or should—or could be," he joked of his Cassandra's Dream co-star. "I think that's the greatest demonstration of his innate...

A number of men have served as the face of Marlboro cigarettes over the years. But there there were only so many Marlboro Men for the ages. Darrell Winfield, the Wyoming rancher who was the first authentic cowboy to star in the Philip Morris-owned brand's iconic advertising campaign, has died at the age of 85, CNN reports. No cause of death was given. An obituary posted to Fremont County, Wy.'s County 10 website noted that he passed away Jan. 12. Winfield was discovered by Philip Morris ad man Leo Burnett in 1968 while working on the Quarter Circle 5 Ranch in Pinedale, Wy., and remained as a face of the brand until 1989. It became illegal in 1998 for American tobacco companies to use humans or cartoons...

Missing episode hunter Philip Morris might be keeping schtum on the possibility of further recoveries, but fortunately British Pathe is being somewhat more liberal with the contents of its archives. I draw your attention to this interesting snippet from the late 1960s, which goes under the rather unimaginative title of Schoolboys and Girls Exhibition (1967-1968.)
