Magpie revolves around a toxic heterosexual marriage dynamic you’ve certainly seen a thousand times before, if not in real life then at least in pop culture. Annette (Daisy Ridley) is the long-suffering wife, who’s sacrificed her career to cook and clean and raise children for an ungrateful man. Ben (Shazad Latif) is that ungrateful man, who seems to notice Annette only when he’s ticked off with her.
When a glamorous actress (Matilda Lutz’s Alicia) enters their lives via a movie role for their daughter (Hiba Ahmed’s Tilly), it’s practically a foregone conclusion that Ben will further neglect Annette in favor of this shiny new romance. The big question, then, is what Annette might do — what a woman already on the edge might prove capable of once she’s pushed. But despite a juicy hook built on heated emotions and drastic actions, Magpie proves too...

Mark Wahlberg’s The Family Plan debuted on Apple TV+ last week, and according to Deadline, it currently stands as the most-viewed movie in the history of the streaming service.
Apple TV+ didn’t provide any numbers for viewership of The Family Plan, so we’ll just have to take their word for it. The action comedy stars Mark Wahlberg as a suburban dad and car salesman named Dan Morgan, whose secret past as an elite government assassin comes back to haunt him. “When enemies from his past track him down, Dan packs his unsuspecting wife (Michelle Monaghan), angsty teen daughter, pro-gamer teen son and adorable 10-month-old baby into their minivan and takes off on an impromptu cross-country road trip to Las Vegas,” reads the synopsis. “Determined to protect his family — while treating them to the vacation of a lifetime — Dan must put his long-dormant skills into action, without revealing his true identity.

After a decorated career in television, The Family Plan director Simon Cellan Jones has returned to feature films for the first time in two-plus decades.
Cellan Jones’ feature career began with 2000’s Some Voices, a British drama starring a still-emerging Daniel Craig, and he soon followed that up with 2002’s The One and Only, before spending two decades in television, helming episodes of How to Make It in America, Treme, Jessica Jones, Boardwalk Empire, Ballers and Shooter. Four of the aforementioned shows were executive produced by Mark Wahlberg, and when the actor needed a filmmaker to direct March 2024’s Arthur the King during the pandemic, he gave Cellan Jones a second go-round in the feature space. The shoot went well, so well that after Cellan Jones locked picture, he quickly started prepping their current Apple TV+ release, The Family Plan.

Mark Wahlberg crashed a frat party while visiting his daughter, Ella, in college back in September during parents’ weekend.
“They were having the most fun I’ve ever seen anybody have, ever!” he recently told Et. “Even more than her coming to Vegas, I was at the frat house and, you know, a couple of spots in town.”
Wahlberg, who skipped college to focus on his career, mused about the possibilities. “I’d still be in college,” he laughed. “I would still be at the frat house. I’d be a 25th-year senior, yeah. It was nuts. Parents’ weekend was incredible.”
Walhberg is currently starring opposite Michelle Monaghan in the Apple TV+ film, The Family Plan.

The twist? No one in his family knows the truth about his former life, and it’s a secret he tries to keep throughout the whole movie.

Here’s why Mark Wahlberg was so intent on getting an F-Bomb for his character in Apple TV+’s The Family Plan.
The Uncharted star’s latest film is a PG-13, family-friendly action-comedy with lots of heart. While it might not be R-rated, a PG-13 project does still get to retain a single F-Bomb throughout its runtime.
When it came to The Family Plan, Wahlberg was pretty confident that his character, Dan Morgan, should have been given the honor. Though, things didn’t quite play out how the actor expected.

Plot: Dan Morgan loves his quiet suburban life as a devoted husband, father of three and successful car salesman. But that’s only half the story. Decades earlier, he was an elite government assassin tasked with eliminating the world’s deadliest threats. When enemies from his past track him down, Dan packs his unsuspecting wife, angsty teen daughter, pro-gamer teen son and adorable 10-month-old baby into their minivan and takes off on an impromptu cross-country road trip to Las Vegas. Determined to protect his family — while treating them to the vacation of a lifetime — Dan must put his long-dormant skills into action, without revealing his true identity.
Review: Mark Wahlberg’s recent output has been mixed at best. For every solid acting project, Wahlberg has churned out awful action (Infinite), terrible comedy (Me Time), and a couple of attempts at franchises. The actor’s latest project blends humor and action in The Family Plan.

Fondly remembered as a permanent resident on all-night movie channels, this patchwork concoction has just enough ‘good stuff’ to qualify as a fun monster show. Jim Davis’s stock-footage safari arrives just in time to be irrelevant to the fate of the title monsters; some good actors are along for what amounts to a picnic in Griffith Park’s Bronson Caverns. There’s still not a full accounting of who did what, special effects-wise. But Hey! The picture has stop-motion animation, which always guarantees viewer interest.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, the Order of the Jedi served as the guardians of the universe. Through the power of the force, they stood vigilant against the destructive power of the Dark Side. Obviously this is a work of fiction, direct from the mind of George Lucas and brought to life in the Star Wars franchise. In the real world, however, Jedi are very real. Founded in the UK in 2007, the Church of Jediism (Coj) serves as a meeting place for individuals with a belief in the force.
One has to wonder however; without the assistance of lightsabers, X-Wing Fighters and space stations the size of small moons, how do you become a Jedi in modern society? For more information, I spoke to Paul Cutler: a former soldier turned bus driver, who just so happens to be a high ranking member of the Coj.

H.P. Lovecraft’S The Statement Of Randolph Carter
Stars: Dan Morgan, Jonathan Hansler, Richard Hollingsworth, Alan Thorpe | Music by Jeremy Biggs & Imran Ahmad | Written by Jeremy Biggs | Directed by Jeremy Biggs & Dan Morgan
There’s really not a great deal I can say about The Statement of Randolph Carter that wouldn’t be better stated by simply listening to the 25-minute adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s short story. I can give you the set-up: Randolph Carter gives a statement to the police regarding the disappearance of his mentor, Harley Warren, after an evening of occult excavation at Big Cypress Swamp.
To say more, I fear, would be to ruin the creeping terror that the production invokes in the listener. The essentially two-handed production (with the exception of two minor police interrogators) really excels at the kind of building, suspenseful horror that Lovecraft is known for, with omens and threats simply...

Right now is not a bad time for admirers of Robert Bresson. A traveling retrospective has made its way across numerous cities, and people who'd never gotten a chance to glimpse Four Nights of a Dreamer (1971) now get to watch it on the big screen in a proper print. Furthermore, the critical and cinephilic culture surrounding Bresson's work is probably more alive now than it has been in a long time. Perhaps nowhere is this more evident than the wider interest in (and affection for) the director's late color films, earlier misunderstood and dismissed in some quarters as odd aberrations which lacked the spiritual clarity or asceticism of the black-and-white work. It's for this reason that film culture can welcome a second, revised edition of James Quandt's crucial anthology, Robert Bresson.
There is simply no more essential book of material on Bresson to be found in the English language, unless...

Philippe Mora: Ballad Of A Mad Dog

Alex Simon
Born in Paris in 1949, Philippe Mora is a member of one of Australia’s best known artistic families. His parents, Georges Mora and Mirka Mora, migrated to Australia from France in 1951 and settled in Melbourne, where they quickly became key figures on the Melbourne cultural scene. Georges, a wartime resistance fighter, became an influential art dealer, and in 1967 he founded one of the first commercial art galleries in Melbourne, Tolarno Galleries. The Mora family home and restaurants were focal points of Melbourne's bohemian subculture. As a result of this, Philippe and his brothers had what he has described as a "culturally privileged childhood."
Philippe moved to London in late 1967 to pursue painting and filmmaking. He was one of many important Australian artists, writers and others who...

Public Enemies (Universal) Johnny Depp portrays legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger in co- writer/director Michael Mann’s take on America’s first “Public Enemy Number One.” Like many big studio releases today, Public Enemies has it all: A-list talent before and behind the camera, but lacks a heart or soul that allows its audience to connect with it. Film plays out like a “true crime” TV show with re-enactments of famous events cast with top actors and shot by the best technicians in the business, with little, if any, character or story development to hold it together in between. A real disappointment from one of our finest filmmakers and finest actors. The lone standout: the great character actor Stephen Lang as a hard-eyed lawman who’s seen a lot, but manages to retain a tiny piece of his heart. For a better take on the same subject,...

This is only the second installment of Western Wednesday, and I believe I have already seen the messiest and strangest film that ever boasted a horse, a pistol, and a sunset: Mad Dog Morgan. It was a toss-up between Morgan and The Ox-Bow Incident, but I had a thirst for some Ozploitation, and Morgan is a pretty legendary piece of Australian filmmaking.
It also seemed like a good idea to expand the cinematic frontier early on in this feature, and visit a place that has a remarkably similar history. Americans tend to think that the myth of the Wild Wild West is theirs, and theirs alone – and it certainly is, but Australia enjoyed a settlement experience that was just as violent and lawless as our own. They just had kangaroos instead of buffalo, and convicts instead of hardy pioneers.
One thing America and Australia would appear to have in common is an idolization of outlaws.
