House of the Dragon may have had the toughest mission of any new show last year: Launch a prequel series to the most popular and Emmy-winning drama of the 21st century with entirely new characters, then execute a bold 10-year time jump midway through the season that swaps out half of the show’s core cast. Yet showrunner Ryan Condal and the rest of the Dragon team managed to disprove doubters with their adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s mammoth novel Fire & Blood, which chronicles a 150-year history of the dragon-riding Targaryen family. The first season — starring Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke and Paddy Considine — spun the Gothic tale of a royal family gradually being torn apart amid power-hungry infighting. The season also racked up eight Emmy nominations, including a best drama nom, and its 10th episode was HBO’s most watched finale since Game of Thrones ended in...

“House of the Dragon” had an incredibly high bar to clear. Not only was it following in the footsteps of the juggernaut that was “Game of Thrones,” but in contrast to other TV sequels or spinoffs, this prequel had zero character crossover beyond the Targaryen name. It’s an all-new cast of characters in a very different Westeros, and getting viewers to care about that was not a given.
And yet, HBO’s “House of the Dragon” is a massive success. In addition to widespread critical acclaim, it debuted to 9.99 million viewers on its first night — the largest single-day debut for a series in HBO Max history. And that success both critically and commercially is due to the innovative creative decisions made by showrunner and co-creator Ryan Condal and his team.

Spoilers ahead for "House of the Dragon" episode 5.
If there is one thing you don't want to do in Westeros, it's attend a wedding. Nothing good ever happens at those things, and they often end with more than a few corpses. In the fifth episode of the HBO prequel series "House of the Dragon," we get to attend the wedding of Princess and heir to the Iron Throne Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock through episode 5) and Ser Laenor Velaryon (Theo Nate through episode 5).
It's not the best match in many ways. Rhaenyra has the hots for her uncle Daemon (Matt Smith), and Laenor prefers men as romantic partners. Westeros isn't a friendly place for those in the LGBTQ+ community, but Rhaenyra suggests a compromise. They don't have a choice in this marriage that will bring their houses together, but Rhaenyra understands his feelings and wants romantic freedom of her own. They...

This post contains major spoilers for the latest episode of "House of the Dragon" and the book "Fire & Blood."
If there is one thing we know about "House of the Dragon" and its predecessor, "Game of Thrones," it's that endings for characters are rarely happy. Weddings, which are supposed to be celebrations, largely end in death. People are murdered all over the place for political expediency. Remarkably few are spared the consequences of politics and power.
While we can argue whether Sansa, Tyrion, and Bran are really as happy as Arya Stark out on the open sea, most of their fellow characters died miserably in "Game of Thrones." "House of the Dragon" wasn't shaping up to be any better ... until the end of episode seven. Unlike "Game of Thrones," I haven't read the book "House of the Dragon" is based on. This post contains plenty of spoilers related to weddings and funerals in "Game of Thrones" and "House of the Dragon." Proceed as you would down the church aisle, at your own risk.
In the world of Westeros, to paraphrase Billy Idol, it's always a nice day for a Red Wedding. You might think "it's your funeral" to show up at one, but as we learned this week in "Driftmark," the latest episode of "House of the Dragon," actual funerals in Westeros can be dangerous affairs, too.
Basically, anytime you get a bunch of family members together for a big occasion, happy or sad, it's going to go sour, so we shouldn't be surprised at the events that went down in "Driftmark." The funeral of Lady Laena Velaryon (Nanna Blondell) after her death by dragonfire turned into a real Old Testament, eye-for-an-eye affair. Perhaps the first sign of trouble was the way Laena's husband,...

Time jumps in television shows can be difficult to navigate, especially when recasting actors. In the case of "House of the Dragon," Milly Alcock and Emily Carey both gave fantastic performances as Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower respectively, so saying goodbye to these two actors hasn't been easy for viewers. The show is well-written, but it's fair to say that Alcock and Carey are the reason we've all come to care so much about these two young women over the past five episodes. The show's sixth installment, "The Princess and the Queen," reintroduced us to these characters 10 years later, and while they do bear a rather striking resemblance to their teenage counterparts, they are now played by different actors.
Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke have moved into the roles of Rhaenyra and Alicent, who weren't the only younger characters to be recast. Siblings Laenor and Laena Velaryon are played by new performers as well.

Episode 6 of House of the Dragon not only saw a massive time jump but the death of one of the important characters.
In Episode 5, viewers saw Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) turn up uninvited to Princess Rhaenyra’s (Milly Alcock) wedding to Ser Laenor Velaryon (Theo Nate). Here, he set eyes on Lady Laena (Savannah Steyn), who is the sister of Laenor.
With a ten-year time jump, it was revealed in Sunday night’s episode that Daemon and Laena (now portrayed by Nanna Blondell) had gotten married since Rhaenyra’s wedding.
Laena had also given birth to twin girls, Baela (Shani Smethurst) and Rhaena (Eva Ossei-Gerning).
However, things did not go well for this union and Laena died during childbirth with their third child.

As was expected, Episode 6 of House of the Dragon introduced a massive time jump of ten years.
This also meant that some of the younger characters were aged up.
Princess Rhaenyra and her husband, Laenor Velaryon, had actor changes, with Emma D’Arcy and John MacMillian replacing Milly Alcock and Theo Nate, respectively.
Alicent Hightower was also aged up, and Olivia Cooke stepped in for Emily Carey because of this.
In addition to this, the children of Alicent were also recast, with Ty Tennent portraying Aegon Targaryen and Evie Allen playing Helaena, who was only a baby in Episode 5 of House of the Dragon.
Added into the mix were several new children. So, let’s have a look at who all these kids are.

[Warning: Spoilers for “House of the Dragon” season 1, episode six, which is aptly titled “The Princess and the Queen”.]
After five episodes of “House of the Dragon”, Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke finally made their debut as older versions of Prince Rhaenyra Targaryen and Queen Alicent Hightower, respectively. The two stars take over the roles originated by Milly Alcock and Emily Carey after the “Game of Thrones” prequel series jumped forward 10 years in episode six.
And it’s safe to say that the relationship between the former best friends is as complicated as ever as family in-fighting and politicking for the Iron Throne continues to drive a massive wedge between them. While speaking to Et, D’Arcy and Cooke share where each character is at this point in their life as “we pick up with our ancient characters,” the latter jokes.

Laena and Laenor Valaryon actors Nova Fouellis-Mose and Theo Nate were also replaced by Nanna Blondell and John MacMillan.
While the trailers for the show revealed long ago that the cast would undergo changes, fans were nevertheless upset at losing some of their favourite actors.
“Feels like watching a whole new show with that cast change. I don’t like it,” one viewer tweeted.
“I 100 wish we had more time with the younger cast of #HouseOfTheDragon,” moaned another.
Many were particularly upset by the loss of Australian actor Alcock, who quickly became a fan-favourite.

Emma D'Arcy is tapping in. While fans are loving Milly Alcock's performance as Princess Rhaenyra in HBO's House of the Dragon, it's time for a new actor to step into the role as the series makes a time jump for the last five episodes of season one. Next time viewers tune in to the Game of Thrones prequel, Emma will be portraying the platinum blonde princess, alongside John Macmillan's older version of her husband, Laenor Velaryon, stepping in for Theo Nate. HBO gave viewers a taste of what they can expect from the Truth Seekers alum in a Sept. 20 preview of the upcoming sixth episode in which Rhaenyra has given birth to her first child, a baby boy, with Laenor. HBO's House of the Dragon reaches a big turning point this weekend.
The Game of Thrones prequel will take viewers 10 years into the future, with Emma D'Arcy taking over from Milly Alcock, Olivia Cooke taking over from Emily Carey, and John Macmillan taking over for Theo Nate.
TV Fanatic got the chance to watch House of the Dragon Season 1 Episode 6, and it presents a big shift in the narrative, but it's pretty seamless.
HBO dropped a sneak peek at the highly anticipated episode titled "The Princess and the Queen" on its social media channels this week.
It picks up with Rhaenyra following the birth of her son, and she's been summoned to see the Queen.
"Where are you going?" Laenor wonders.
"She wants to see him," Rhaenyra responds.
"Now? I'm coming with you," her husband says.
"I should hope so," says the princess.
"Let me take him," Laenor offers.

House of the Dragon viewers have been calling out other fans of the show for romanticising the incestual relationship between Daemon and his niece Rhaenyra.
The characters in the hit HBO series are played by Matt Smith and Milly Alcock, who recently spoke about how “gnarly” their first incest scene was to film.
*Spoiler warning for House of the Dragon episodes four and five*
In episode four of the Game of Thrones spin-off, which aired earlier this month, Rhaenyra Targaryen – heir to the Iron Throne – was led on a secret nighttime adventure around King’s Landing by her uncle Daemon.
Tension had been building between the pair already, but it was during these scenes that they kissed and engaged in a sexually charged moment set in a brothel.
Since then, showrunners have depicted Daemon pursuing his niece and at one point asking her father, Viserys (Paddy Considine), to allow them to marry.

In addition to this, her new husband from Episode 5, Ser Laenor Velaryon, will be played by John MacMillian.

Episode 5 of House of the Dragon saw the wedding between Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) and Ser Laenor Velaryon (Theo Nate).
Rhaenyra’s uncle, Prince Daemon (Matt Smith), also turned up unexpectedly, and it appears that things between him and his niece are still incredibly steamy.
Once King Viserys (Paddy Considine) saw this, he fast-forwarded the wedding, particularly more so after Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) killed Laenor’s boyfriend, Ser Joffrey Lonmouth (Solly McLeod).
At the end of the episode, Viserys collapsed, and his life now hangs in the balance. This means that viewers are eager to find out what happens next in HBO’s new epic fantasy series.
Episode 6 will see a significant time jump from the end of Episode 5, revealing Viserys’ fate, and will also introduce new actors for two well-loved characters.

Fabien Frankel stars as Ser Criston Cole in Season 1 of House of the Dragon. Pic credit: HBO
Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) had a rough time in Episode 5 of House of the Dragon, resulting in losing his cool and beating another man to death.
Last week’s episode saw Criston being seduced by Princess Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock), and, in this week’s installment, it became apparent very quickly that he had fallen hard for her.
When Rhaenyra has no option but to wed Ser Laenor Velaryon (Theo Nate), Criston offers another alternative — elope with him.
While Rhaenyra might like the Kingsguard, it turned out that she would much rather keep him as a side thing than give up the crown.
Then, when Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey) snooped into what happened with Rhaenyra and her uncle, Criston fessed up to sleeping with the princess, leaving him feeling pretty terrible about himself and what he had done.

Paddy Considine stars as King Viserys Targaryen in Episode 5 of House of the Dragon Season 1. Pic credit: HBO/Ollie Upton
Ever since House of the Dragon premiered on HBO, the question of who will rule after King Viserys (Paddy Considine) is gone has been pivotal to the storyline.
The king is not extremely old, but his health has been called into question more and more as Season 1 progresses. In addition to this, the king only had one child: a girl.
However, since the end of Episode 1, the king has declared that his daughter, Princess Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock), will rule after him, even though the precedent had previously been set that women were not favored to rule in Westeros.
Even though the king has since sired a male heir, he still insists Rhaenyra will rule after him, and this has been causing some lowkey drama behind the scenes.

Spoilers for "House of the Dragon" episode 5.
In this week's "House of the Dragon," we finally got to see Driftmark, the castle of Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), and Princess Rhaenys (Eve Best). These two are the wealthiest people in Westeros, with Corlys controlling the navy and Rhaenys a dragon rider. This power couple -- who seem to love each other, unlike most of the court -- have turned a stone castle on an island into a comfortable home.
We're introduced to this place as King Viserys (Paddy Considine) shows up to propose a marriage between Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) and Ser Laenor Velaryon (Theo Nate). He decides to sail there in a storm because every decision this king makes is a bad one, despite being the nicest man in Westeros. Even though the sky is dark, there is something about this castle that is warm and inviting. It's a display of power without being showy.

Matt Smith stars as Daemon Targaryen in Season 1 of House of the Dragon. Pic credit: HBO
Episode 4 of House of the Dragon saw Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) reunited with his brother, King Viserys (Paddy Considine) after a very public rift that saw Daemon banished from King’s Landing.
However, by the end of the episode, Daemon had managed to canoodle with his niece, the king’s daughter, Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock), and the fight was on again between the brothers.
Even though it was up for debate over whether or not Daemon and Rhaenyra actually had intercourse, the rumor mill went into overdrive and Viserys banished his brother once more.
However, that wasn’t stopping Daemon from doing as he pleased and after asking Viserys for Rhaenyra’s hand in marriage — and getting rejected — he decided it was time to rid himself of his first wife in order to make it easier to marry his niece.

Most couples on "Game of Thrones" and its prequel series, "House of the Dragon," are pretty much doomed from the start. Life in Westeros is hard, even for its most rich and powerful, and marriages are rarely a matter of love. For Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) and Laenor Velaryon (Theo Nate), marriage is entirely political. They will unite two ancient houses and help cement political alliances, forging a new path forward with their offspring. Both of them a bit hesitant to wed because they already have romantic interests, but are able to come to an agreement that should satisfy everyone. They're surprisingly progressive in a frequently backwards world, opting for a secret open marriage that will allow Laenor to express his true feelings for the Knight of Kisses, Joffrey (Solly McLeod), while Rhaenyra can continue...

According to Illyrio Mopatis, a Dothraki wedding without at least three deaths is considered a dull affair. If that’s the case then perhaps Westeros and Essos in George R.R. Martin’s sprawling Word of Ice and Fire are not so different after all.
As viewers have seen through eight seasons of Game of Thrones and five episodes of House of the Dragon, it’s rare for a Westerosi wedding to come and go without some bloodshed. The trend started with the massacre that was The Red Wedding in Game of Thrones season 3. It continued with Joffrey Baratheon’s own “Purple Wedding” the next year. Now, in the fifth episode of House of the Dragon, violence visits a wedding yet again in the form of a disgruntled Dornish knight.

Getting to see the Stark kids grow up was a major part of the experience of watching "Game of Thrones." Across eight seasons, the likes of Arya, Sansa, and Bran slowly but surely made their way from being spirited, naive whipper-snappers to cunning warriors, strategic leaders, and, er, weirdo seers who set Westeros on the path to being a democracy one day (or not).
"House of the Dragon," on the other hand, has operated on an accelerated timeline. In just five episodes, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) and Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey) have gone from being young teens idling in the Red Keep's gardens to the controversial heir to the Iron Throne and queen of the Seven Kingdoms, respectively. Alas, the show's next time jump will be its biggest one yet, which means the time has come to bid farewell...

Wedding ceremonies in the "Game of Thrones" franchise almost always end in violence. There's the prime example of the devastating Red Wedding, wherein the Lannisters "send their regards" and paint the wedding hall red as "The Rains of Castamere" plays ominously in the background. Violence has always been an integral part of the political intrigue that steers the course of the Seven Kingdoms, some instances more brutal than others.
"Game of Thrones" fans will remember the sudden, gruesome death of Oberyn Martell, whose eyes were gouged out by the Mountain during a trial by combat. "House of the Dragon" continues this tradition in its own way — key instances being Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) disemboweling the Crabfeeder on the shores of the Stepstones and the "f*** around and find out" moment with Lord Blackwood and the bully dude from House Bracken in episode four.

In 2022, many Americans are getting married later, or not at all, and never do we find ourselves as grateful for this cultural evolution than while watching “Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon.”
Sunday’s “Dragon” episode, “We Light the Day” celebrated the wedding of heir to the Iron Throne Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) to the powerful heir to Driftmark Laenor Velaryon (Theo Nate). The young and decidedly not in love couple are barely even related, a victory in all seven kingdoms, but their nuptials were far from uneventful, and not in a good way.
Back in “Game of Thrones” Season 1, it was observed that “A Dothraki wedding without at least three deaths is considered a dull affair.” This was uttered at Daenerys’ wedding to Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa), in a scene that very much depicted the nonwhite Dothraki as wild and barbaric. Because at this point, what has he not done? Daemon's proclivity for dismemberment has led him to headline some of the show's gnarliest, most brutal sequences of violence. He's a master of chaos — he almost sacrificed his life to spite his brother, and his brothel visits have ended with him seducing his niece. He killed (!!!) his wife to inherit her castle. He's either always smeared in blood or spending time smearing others in blood. He is a red flag at its worst. He's ruining familial relationships and trying to kiss his niece at her pre-wedding feast while his brother watches. He's unpredictable; he never lets anyone know his next move,...

Whether it’s Charlie Sheen being quietly swapped out for Ashton Kutcher in Two and a Half Men, or Henry Blake’s plane going down over the Sea of Japan in M*A*S*H , there is nothing that marks out televisual milestones like changes to the dramatis personae. Well, this week’s episode, “We Light the Way”, feels like the end of an era as House of the Dragon reshuffles its cast, just five episodes in. Say goodbye to young Rhaenyra and young Alicent: the next time you see them, they’ll be all grown up.
Marriage of Inconvenience
But, for now, things are as we left them. Daemon (Matt Smith) has been banished to the Vale where he’s greeted by his surprisingly attractive wife (what were all his complaints about?) who is less than happy to see him. “Have you at...

Ever since the shocking “Red Wedding” scene and the subsequent “Purple Wedding” one on the original “Game of Thrones” series, fans have come to expect that any nuptials on the franchise could lead to blood, violence or a major death. And in the case of “House of the Dragon”, they weren’t wrong to suspect that a royal wedding between House Targaryen and House Velaryon would end in horror.
“It was really, really tense, really, really deep,” says Theo Nate, who plays Corlys Velaryon’s son, Laenor.
As teased ahead of Sunday’s premiere, Rhaenyra’s (Milly Alcock) position as the heir to the Iron Throne was once again threatened. And as predicted by the Queen Who Never Was (Eve Best), knives came out as another shocking wedding ceremony unfolded. [Warning: Spoilers for “House of the Dragon”, season 1, episode five, “We Light the Way.”]

So, what exactly went down in King’s Landing?...

This article contains House of the Dragon episode 5 spoilers.
When House of the Dragon began, it was like being invited to an extended family reunion full of relatives we’ve never met. Here are five major Targaryen characters, all with silver hair; and here are also the Velaryons, each of the same silver hair, who’ve married into the Targaryens. And though they hadn’t married into the royal dynasty yet, the prospects of Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) and his daughter Alicent (Emily Carey) were clearly signaled to be on the rise by the end of the first hour.
Non-book readers’ attentions were so distracted that many likely failed to pay much attention to Lord Lyonel Strong (Gavin Spokes) as the quietest advisor on the King’s Small Council. Nor have too many been concerned with his sons who’ve been around since the third episode.
That probably changed with last night’s episode,...
