There was a time not so long ago when limited series were just that: limited. In a post-“Big Little Lies” existence, however, series are limited only until a network executive decides they’re not. For now, FX’s critically acclaimed “Shōgun,” a striking 10-episode historical epic about warring factions in Japan, remains a limited series, having this week reached the end of its source material, James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name. The series finale, “A Dream of a Dream,” is now streaming on Hulu, and after picking up in the aftermath of Mariko’s (Anna Sawai) death, manages to complete its narrative arc in emotionally satisfying fashion.
Since its debut in late February, the endlessly compelling (and surprisingly funny) series has captivated viewers, reminding us of the thrills of event TV. Each episode was bigger than the one that came before it, right up until the end.

David West Read, the showrunner of the new Apple TV+ series Big Door Prize, discussed the challenges of the production and the cast in his new uInterview.
“Well, the series is based on a book by M.O. Walsh called The Big Door Prize, which has this great premise of like, what if there was a machine that could tell you your life’s potential?” he told uInterview at SXSW. “Just seemed like such a fun jumping-off place for a series where you can get into all these different characters who have totally different experiences with the machine, and it really makes everyone reevaluate their lives. It’s like a whole town going through a midlife crisis.”
As showrunner, Read, who was responsible for overseeing the production of each episode, explained what he found the most challenging.

In her new exclusive uInterview, Gabrielle Dennis explained who her character, Cass, is and what she goes through in season one of the TV show Big Door Prize.
“Well Cass is a mom, she’s a wife, she’s at that crossroads I feel like the entire town is in and, you know, it’s like this big question of where are we at in this world? What is our purpose? And all these things and everything around her is changing,” she told uInterview at SXSW in Austin, Texas.
Cass’s life significantly changes throughout the show and she is not the same person she was at the beginning.
“The show starts with her husband’s 40th birthday, and she’s all excited buying him 40 individual gifts and like life is normal and then like there’s this big emotional change,” she said.

In 2009, Chris O’Dowd bought a one-way ticket to Los Angeles. Back then, he was known as the dishevelled, 6ft 4in star of The It Crowd, playing work-shy Roy “Have you tried turning it on and off again?” Trenneman. On the cusp of 30, he’d just been told that, after three series of the Channel 4 sitcom, the show’s budget was being slashed. There was a threat that the next run would be cut down from six to four episodes. “I remember thinking, ‘Well, if I’m in a really big show on TV, and I can’t really pay my rent with what that would pay, then this isn’t a system that’s sustainable for me,’” he says, sipping from a bottle of fizzy water. Just as well, then, that the flight to America changed his life. He met his future wife there. And backstage at a Louis Ck gig,...

Apple TV+”s The Big Door Prize comes armed with a deceptively simple elevator pitch. Based on a book of the same name by M.O. Walsh, this 10 episode series ponders “if a nondescript machine in a corner store promised to tell you your ultimate destiny, would you want to know it?”
At first, you might be thinking “sure, why not?” That concept is not markedly different from what a psychic or boardwalk fortune teller might guarantee. And in the case of the butterfly-branded “Morpho machine,” receiving your reading would actually be far cheaper at only $2. It’s all just fun and games, now who has four quarters?
But what if seemingly everyone in your small American town who utilized the Morpho machine appeared to be fundamentally changed by the experience? What if dozens of your peers completely rearranged the details of their lives to better fit its ultimate vision for them?...

There’s an interpretation of the beloved comedy Schitt’s Creek wherein the town of Schitt’s Creek is actually Purgatory — a metaphysical proving ground in which the Rose family faces a series of banal and repetitive tasks meant to test their respective souls and determine whether or not they’re worthy of salvation.
It’s not a perfect interpretation: There’s maybe a little more coming and going from Schitt’s Creek than behooves the theory; plus when you open a theological door to ponder whether, in this scenario, Chris Elliott’s Roland is God or something, nobody is likely to be satisfied. But for approximately 90 percent of the show, you can absolutely accept Schitt’s Creek as limbo. If you choose to.
The truth, though, is that some shows are designed to be treated as allegory and other shows are designed to resist allegorical readings — to be ongoing, slice-of-life shows, treated literally if not seriously.

Is knowledge power, or is ignorance bliss? That central question drives Apple TV+’s “The Big Door Prize” through its first 10 episodes — although if you’re expecting a concrete answer, you may be disappointed.
When the half-hour(ish) comedy debuts its first three episodes on March 29, it presents the residents of a small American town called Deerfield grappling with that very problem. A mysterious machine called the Morpho has landed in the town store, promising to reveal everyone’s life potential in exchange for a couple of bucks, fingerprints and social security numbers.
Although no one knows where the machine came from, the residents are (mostly) happy to line up for their personalized cards, which range from dancer to royalty to meteorologist. And that’s when the existential crises begin. Although most residents are delighted when their innermost selves come to light on these cards, other answers are ambiguous and — in some cases — demoralizing.

Apple TV+ is having success with charming dramedy of late. The Jason Segel and Harrison Ford-led "Shrinking" delighted audiences with its exploration of grief mixed with light-hearted comedy, and was just rewarded with a second-season renewal. Now, it looks like Tim Cook's streaming service is providing similarly heartfelt yet challenging fare in the form of "The Big Door Prize."
Based on M.O. Walsh's novel of the same name, the upcoming series will see Chris O'Dowd lead an ensemble cast. O'Dowd plays school teacher Dusty, who's seemingly content with his life until a mysterious machine shows up in his small Louisiana town and begins to make everyone, including himself, question their life trajectory.
With an affable fellow like O'Dowd in the lead role, and coming from "Schitt's Creek" writer David West Read, you can imagine the wholesome energy this dramedy will provide. Read, who's also just been announced as...

What’s your potential?
It’s not a question you hear that often — at least, not since you sat in front of a high school guidance counselor or outspoken parent — but it’s certainly one lingering in your mind as you make decisions. Is my job fulfilling enough? Should I move to to another city? Another country? Even when thinking about partners or kids, you may wonder how choosing who to pursue could end up defining the rest of your life — either expanding what you’re capable of or limiting it.

Walsh’s 2021 novel of the same name, forces the question into the spotlight when a mysterious machine appears (as if from nowhere) within a small town convenience store. Apple TV+ bills "The Big Door Prize" as a heartwarming and character-driven comedy. That description isn't wrong, but the show based on the novel of the same name by M.O. Walsh is more than that. To say more will get into spoilers, but it will likely surprise audiences (in a good way) when they sit back and watch what happens to a small town when a mysterious machine appears that will spit out your life's potential on a neat, blue business card.
I talked with Chris O'Dowd ("The It Crowd"), the lead of the ensemble cast, as well as showrunner David West Read ("Schitt's Creek") during the Television Critics Association winter press tour. During our conversation, we talked about theremins (a weird musical instrument you play by waving your hands through the air), but we also talked about some of the more serious themes that the show explores. What if you could find out your life potential by feeding a few quarters to an arcade machine that magically appeared in your local convenience store? That's the premise of "The Big Door Prize," the series based on M.O. Walsh's book of the same name that comes from "Schitt's Creek" writer David West Read.
During the Television Critics Association winter press tour, Read, along with show stars Chris O'Dowd, Gabrielle Dennis, Josh Segarra, Sammy Fourlas, and Djouliet Amara, took to the stage to talk about the upcoming Apple TV+ series, which also dropped its first teaser trailer. And while the show is billed first as a comedy (and it is funny), it's also a character-driven series that will likely twist your heartstrings more than you were expecting.
"It's a comedy that has elements of drama and magic, and there's a slight eeriness to it around the edges," Read explained.

What would you do if you could find out your life's true potential?
