“What if I don’t like the guy I am now, bro” says Bosco (Malcolm Kamulete). “You have to learn to like him ‘cause you’re stuck with him” says Rusty (Keiren Hamilton-Amos). Watching family dynamics play out on screen never goes out of fashion and BBC’s latest drama Champion is proof of that.
A love letter to South London, Champion is the first TV project written by Candice Carty-Williams, author of the 2019 novel Queenie, which will also be released as a TV drama on Channel 4 later this year. Champion tells the story of the titular family, focusing mostly on the Champion siblings, rapper Bosco and his sister Vita (Déja J Bowens) as they battle with their sense of duty to their family and their own musical success.
When the series starts, Bosco is fresh out of prison and trying to make his comeback. But it’s not...

Exclusive: Candice Carty-Williams was catapulted to fame by her hit novel Queenie, which made her the first Black author to win a top prize at the British Book Awards, but she tells Deadline adapting for TV has proved a seriously tough task.
The Channel 4-Hulu adaptation will air this year and Carty-Williams said she has been grappling to hold on to the true self of the character she created nearly a decade ago in the face of editorial wrangling.
She said she “can’t even explain how much harder it was” to adapt Queenie compared with writing her original BBC/Netflix series Champion, which drops on Netflix today.
“People buy something because they have an idea of what they want,” said the London-born auteur. “There was an idea of what they wanted to do with Queenie and for me it was like, ‘What?’. Of course it’s really...

The BBC has hit its £100M ($130M) three-year diversity content comittment with one year to spare, according to the corporation.
The public broadcaster said it has spent around £120M over two years on shows that qualify under the commitment, which was forged in the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. It is also ahead on radio content spend, according to the BBC Diversity Commissioning Code of Practice Progress Report.
The three-year commitment only counts shows that qualify under two of the following three criteria: diverse stories and portrayals, diverse production leadership and diverse company leadership. The criteria are discussed when a show is commissioned and then measured at transmission. Recent examples of shows that would have met the criteria include Big Deal Films/A24 comedy Dreaming Whilst Black and Candice Carty-Williams adaptation Champion.
“We’ve always said the investment was a starting point,” said new Diversity & Inclusion Director Chinny Okolidoh.

Variety has selected its annual list of 10 Brits to Watch, an honor the publication has been bestowing since 2013. Honorees, which will be profiled in the Nov. 24 issue of Variety, include writers, actors, singers and other creatives working in all forms of media. Said Steven Gaydos, Senior VP Global Content/Executive Editor of Variety: “Never far from the center of global film and television creativity and accolades, in 2021 U.K. talent has reasserted its power and primacy with dynamic results. Channel 4 wants to be “braver” and “more ambitious,” said Jo Street, the network’s head of daytime and features.
Street made the comments during a “Commissioners” panel at the Edinburgh TV Festival alongside head of drama Caroline Hollick, head of factual, Danny Horan and head of entertainment and events Phil Harris.
“I think the next phase for us is what do we do outside of property, we get pitched that all the time,” said Street, who is also the head of Channel 4’s Glasgow hub. “I’m very much, urging people who probably will be watching this: don’t pitch us that sort of safe middle ground, we get so much of that, and I want people to be bolder with what we do. We want to be in territories that we’re not currently in.”

Channel 4 and Sky in the U.K. have extended their pre-existing, long-term commercial partnership in a new multi-year agreement which, according to the companies, will facilitate greater opportunity for collaboration, commercial growth and innovation as broadcasting evolves going forward.
Under the terms of the new deal, Sky customers will have access to even more Channel 4 content as more than 1000 hours of All 4 — Channel 4’s VoD platform — exclusives are integrated into Sky’s current and future TV products. Channel 4 will benefit from under the new terms by opening avenues to new digital ad revenue streams which can support its Future4 strategy.
“When we set out our Future4 strategy last year, we made clear that securing strategic distribution partnerships would be a vital part of ensuring we can maximize our reach and impact with viewers in a digital age, grow our revenues and compete more effectively for the future,” said Alex Mahon,...
