Gail Sheehy, a journalist and author whose work examined racism, menopause, drug addiction, and whose profiles ranged from fading high society doyennes to power brokers, died Monday from complications from pneumonia. She was 83.
As a reporter for New York Magazine, Vanity Fair, and other outlets, Sheehy profiled the likes of George W. Bush, Newt Gingrich, Anwar Sadat, Margaret Thatcher, and Edith Beale and Little Edie Beale, the aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis who were later featured in the famous documentary “Grey Gardens.” In a 2014 interview with Npp’s “All Things Considered,” Sheehy said she relied heavily on research when it came to writing about famous figures, and was less concerned with their seminal achievements than their personal struggles.
“I’m looking for their character, which is not about policy,” she said. “Character is what was yesterday and will be tomorrow. What I do is — or I did when...

Of all the wonders held within the Disney California Adventure theme park, few dazzle with the kind of fanciful delight of "World of Color," a spectacular nighttime water show that combines special effects, mist, fire, projections, and colored lights (it took 15 months to design and build at a cost of $75 million). It's like the dancing fountains outside the Bellagio in Las Vegas but turned up to the nth degree and sprinkled with that singular Disney magic. In a few weeks, the complex show will be completely transformed as "World of Color: Winter Dreams," an all-new holiday variation, and it will feature brand new animation from the wizards at Pixar. In a new video posted to the Disney Parks YouTube page (which you can watch below), Liz Gazzano, executive producer of the Pixar Theme Parks Group, and Roger Gould, creative director of the Pixar Theme Parks Group (wait that's a thing?...

tuesday thursday top ten: for the listmaker in me and the listlover in you
What follows is a reworking of a post originally published in 2007. It's two years later and you know what that means: Pixar has given us two more classics. Up brings their feature film count to ten. You know what Ten means: Top Ten Time!
Pixar by Preference
Cars (John Lasseter, 2006) 117 min.
Pixar's only dud. Chief among its problems: the anthropomorphics were forced. Let me get this straight: Cars as bugs on windshields of cars as cars who act like humans and they even sleep in hotels for cars -- What? What? It's not quite Shark Tale in the realm of painful "they're just like us!" pandering but it's not 'good' either. I would give it a second chance except it's also Pixar's longest feature... too long by about 23 minutes. Thankfully, they seem to have reversed their bloated running time trending.
