To understand the love letter that is “The Fall Guy” — a passion project of former stunt performer turned A-list action director David Leitch — consider that Drew Pearce couldn’t write the script until Leitch identified the old-school stunts that would serve as its centerpieces.
IndieWire talked to Leitch and stunt designer Chris O’Hara about four of those jaw-dropping action scenes: the record-breaking cannon roll on the beach, the 225-foot car jump, the helicopter high-fall, and the boat jump. The personal and creative stories of how they came about are almost as gripping as the scenes themselves.
The Cannon Roll
After his accident, stunt double Colt Seavers’ (Ryan Gosling) first stunt is a big one: an explosion that sends his Jeep into a cannon roll. It was so big that Gosling’s own stunt double, Logan Holladay (who is seen on screen buckling Gosling into the Jeep), broke the Guinness World Record with eight-and-half rolls.

On Saturday, WeAreMovieGeeks.com got a sneak peek at the Fall Guy Stuntacular at Universal Studios Hollywood. Based on the upcoming reboot of the 80’s classic TV series, The Fall Guy Stuntacular is a limited running show at the popular movie theme park. Presented just before the Water World stunt show at Universal, this new show features many of the big stunts from the movie. And as if that wasn’t enough, Ryan Gosling, star of the new film was on hand to treat the invited audience to the first look at the stunts and the stunt men and women who make it all possible. Gosling called the film, “a love letter to the stunt community” that has been overshadowed for years. Laughs were also abound, as Gosling doubled down on his likeability and comic chops, joking with the crowd and director of the film David Leitch who was also in attendance.

In a scene early in The Fall Guy, a nameless crewmember buckles Ryan Gosling’s seat belt as his character is about to attempt a cannon roll, a classic car stunt, on the set of a fictional science fiction movie called Metal Storm. Gosling plays Hollywood stuntman Colt Seavers, who is reluctantly returning to the film business after an injury, but in many ways the real star of the scene is the background actor buckling him in, Logan Holladay. Though his screen time lasts only a few moments, Holladay was the real-life stunt driver for Gosling — the one who actually steered a Jeep Grand Cherokee down a Sydney beach and rolled it eight and a half times on the sand, breaking the Guinness world record of seven rolls set by Adam Kirley, the driver of James Bond’s Aston Martin in 2006’s Casino Royale.

As Ryan Gosling took the mic for a special screening of his latest film “The Fall Guy,” the Oscar nominee was eager to salute the stunt community — in particular, to show off the record-breaking stunt that his double performed.
“There’s a gentleman who buckles me into a car — that’s Logan Holladay — for a stunt he’s about to do,” Gosling told the audience assembled at the Grove in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. “Then he goes on to do eight-and-a-half cannon rolls, which is a world record. And then he pulls me out of the car and pats me on the back for the stunt that he just did.”
That’s what makes “The Fall Guy” unique, Gosling explained. “In any other movie, you wouldn’t know that. But in this movie, you do. The lack of recognition [of] the contribution that they make to cinema, to some of...

The upcoming The Fall Guy, in theaters on May 3rd, and a salute to stunt people, had it’s premiere at SXSW earlier this week.
AP reported:
The SXSW premiere of “The Fall Guy” came with some of its own stunts. A pair of motorcycles sped through the crowds milling outside the Paramount Theater before Blunt and Gosling arrived in the back of a pick-up. Blunt and Gosling weren’t the only ones fresh from the Academy Awards. Leitch and his wife, Kelly McCormick, (a producer on “The Fall Guy”) produced a clip reel of stunts for the telecast. Though stunt performance isn’t an Oscar category (a sore point that comes up in “The Fall Guy”), Leitch thinks it will happen soon.

It's been several days now since this year's Oscars ceremony, and yet I'm still scratching my head as to why the Academy had Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt present a montage honoring stunts and stunt performers without mentioning why they had selected these two specific actors to do so. Then there's the bitter irony of the Academy celebrating stunt performers while stubbornly refusing to give them an Oscar of their own, but that's a whole other rabbit hole.
While it's true the pair starred in dual halves of Barbenheimer last year, they've also got a new film coming out in "The Fall Guy." Loosely adapted from Glen A. Larson's '80s action-adventure TV series of the same name, the movie casts Gosling as a stuntman who's rapidly aging out of his occupation from years of risking permanent bodily harm, only to find himself unraveling a mystery on the set...

When director Gina Prince-Bythewood took the helm of Netflix’s “The Old Guard,” bowing on the streaming service July 10, one of the first people she called was longtime collaborator and editor Terilyn Shropshire — the two have a partnership that dates back 20 years, along the way collaborating on “Love & Basketball,” “The Secret Life of Bees,” “Beyond the Lights” and “Shots Fired.”
Prince-Bythewood knew what production company Skydance wanted when it entrusted her with the film, starring Charlize Theron as the leader of a secret band of immortal mercenaries who have been protecting the world — and their own identities — for centuries, and must now be even more vigilant as they bring on a new member (played by KiKi Layne of “If Beale Street Could Talk”).
“They said, ‘We love “Love & Basketball” and “Beyond the Lights,” and what you did with the characters,’” the director explains. “They wanted to bring that kind...

A group of fans got together to create a fan film based on the classic 80s comic book series Rogue Trooper which was created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons. For those of you not familiar with the comic, here's a summary:
It follows the adventures of Rogue, a "Genetic Infantryman", a genetically created, blue-skinned, manufactured super soldier and his three comrades' search for the Traitor General. His comrades are in the form of biochips – onto which a G.I.'s entire personality is downloaded at the time of death for later retrieval – and are named Gunnar (mounted on Rogue's rifle), Bagman (on his backpack) and Helm (on his helmet). He is genetically engineered to be immune to almost all known toxins, can submerge in strong acid unaffected, and is able to withstand a vacuum in his bare skin.
The short film is called Rogue Trooper: The Quartz Massacre...
