They’re hoping that fans won’t, as the Godfather of Soul might have put it, hit it and quit. The site features James Brown concert footage and testimonials — and, of course, opportunities to buy DVDs and other merchandise. “These digital destinations will continue to evolve as we program content specific to key events as well as discover and add new video assets, leveraging Shout Factory’s unique content curation capabilities.” says Jeffrey Thompson, Shout Factory’s VP of digital strategy and business development. The launch – in collaboration with the James Brown Estate – at youtube.com/jamesbrownofficial and shoutfactory.com/jamesbrown coincides with the 45th anniversary of Brown’s Boston concert following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Many historians believe that the concert helped to prevent riots from breaking out as they had in several other cities. Shout Factory founders Richard Foos, Bob Emmer and Garson Foos call...

Shout! Factory, a content distribution company, announced this week it’s hired Jeffrey Thompson for a newly created digital media position. Thompson, a former Conde Nast Entertainment and Walt Disney Company executive, will serve as the company’s VP of digital strategy and business development. Shout! Factory, which was founded by former record company executives Garson and Richard Foos and Bob Emmer, focuses on direct-to-consumer sales of existing music, television, and films but is looking to expand its digital presence. That’s where Thompson comes in. He’ll be responsible for “leverag[ing] Shout!’s unique content curation abilities,” according to a release. Thompson’s background “will lead to more direct-to-consumer distribution of the company’s expansive pop culture library to include mobile, tablet, apps, online and connected TV platforms, especially important given the launch of Shout! Factory’s highly rated Video Time Machine app.” “We look forward to his playing...

"My Daddy-o's a dude!" bragged my ten-year-old daughter Mina to one of her friends.
Wot? I'm a dad and still a dude? Hey, that's pretty cool, but I thought Quincy Jones was the dude. After all, he did release an album in the '80s called The Dude. But where did my daughter pick this "dude" tag up? From my wife? (Doubtful, she might not have married me if she knew I was a dude.) Probably from the Scooby Doo cartoons we watch together. Or from her older brother and his crazed sidewalk skateboard pals in our 'hood. Or maybe she caught Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski at her friend Lea's house.
In the end it didn't matter, 'cuz I suddenly became obsessed with defining what makes a guy a dude. And more importantly, did I possess any of the dude DNA?

Dan Curtis’ Burnt Offerings (1976) was the first horror film/thriller that I saw. I was twelve years-old and its impact on me was indelible. The rapport between Karen Black, Oliver Reed, and Lee Harcourt Montgomery was plausible enough to make me extremely concerned when all hell broke loose on this “perfect” family, though some have argued that this family was frightening enough without the house!
Aside from the artful cinematic visual style and the film’s methodic and slow build-up, the performances by the three leads and supporting work from Burgess Meredith, Eileen Heckart, Dub Taylor, Bette Davis, and the unforgettable Anthony James as the chauffer elevate the film higher than similar genre productions. What also helped make Burnt Offerings so memorable was Robert Cobert’s phenomenal score which fits the movie like a glove. For years I searched fruitlessly...
