Since she first gained national attention in the UK on the BBC talent show "I'd Do Anything," Jessie Buckley has made a memorable impression playing women who find themselves in the company of dangerous men. On the show, she competed the role of Nancy, the tragic wife of abusive Bill Sykes in a new stage version of "Oliver!" Nine years later, she made her film debut in "Beast" as Moll, a young woman who falls for a charismatic drifter who may or may not be a murderer. In the same year, she aided Tom Hardy's brutish protagonist wage his personal war against the powerful East India Company in "Taboo."
More recently, in the Oscar-nominated "Women Talking," she joined an excellent ensemble playing a group of women who are systematically drugged and sexually assaulted by the men in their community. Is it that she's drawn to roles where she can tackle toxic masculinity?...

The film opens in 2020. A woman paints her lips crimson while staring at her reflection in the mirror, studying the details of her wavy blonde wig and firetruck-red skirt. Satisfied with her examination, she relaxes her shoulders and turns to the other side of the room. The camera follows and lands on a child sleeping peacefully. The woman covers the slumbering body with a blanket, gingerly plants a kiss and leaves. Outside, in the dimly lit streets of Dakar, she is followed by a chorus of men wearing complementary red djellabas. “When a drop of water falls on Earth / it’s no longer Earth,” they sing as she walks down the street, “How life is full of surprises.”
The chorus, a staple in Moussa Sène Absa’s films, is particularly useful in Xalé, the director’s passionate thriller about gender violence and retribution. It’s the last installment in the...

Thanks to Doc, Will’s basketball career may have been over before it began.
Doc’s ongoing feud with his business associate Lorenzo in Bel-Air’s second season threatened to expose their shady side hustle, which would have jeopardized the team’s eligibility to play college basketball — pretty much destroying their chances of getting recruited to the NBA.

Note: The following includes spoilers from the “Bel-Air” Season 2 finale.
“I’m a drug addict. A really f—g good one, too. I’m high on coke most days. In fact, I’m high right now.”
The words echoed loudly as Carlton (Olly Sholotan) spoke them while accepting the Founders Award during the Season 2 finale of “Bel-Air,” as the other members of the Banks family watched in disbelief.
It’s a demon Carlton has been dealing with since Season 1, as he battles with his anxiety. No one knew about his drug problem but Will who vowed to stay quiet and in return asked his cousin to stop and lean on him instead. Aunt Viv (Cassandra Freeman) and Uncle Phil (Adrian Holmes) were none the wiser but knew something was bothering their son.
Carlton suffered internally as he tried to be two people at once: A distinguished student and a person...

One of the classic TV comedies that doesn’t get much love anymore is Who’s the Boss? Maybe that’s because it’s not streaming anywhere so it’s hard to binge like Friends or The Office. Also, it’s all the more reason you might need other recommendations to get your Who’s the Boss? fix while you wait for your DVD of the complete first season to arrive.

Who’s the Boss? starred Tony Danza as Tony Micelli, the housekeeper for the Bowers. Tony’s flirtations with Angela Bower (Judith Light) became one of TV’s all time will they or won’t theys. Along the way, Tony dispensed wisdom to his daughter, Samantha (Alyssa Milano) and Angela’s son, Jonathan (Danny Pintauro). Here are five shows you might also like if...

Nearly a quarter century after NBC sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” ended its six-season run, filmmaker Morgan Cooper uploaded a mock trailer for a dramatic reimagining of the series to YouTube, where it has since gained over seven million views. The video’s popularity soon led to the reboot idea becoming a reality in the form of Peacock series “Bel-Air,” which premiered this February. Cooper (who produces the show and directed and wrote part of its first season) recently participated in a 2022 Emmys FYC panel along with showrunners/executive producers T.J. Brady and Rasheed Newson and actors Akira Akbar, Jimmy Akingbola, Jabari Banks, Cassandra Freeman, Adrian Holmes and Coco Jones, moderated by Justin Sylvester from E! News. Watch the video Q&a above.

There’s a whole damn new cinematic subgenre that’s been developing in the past decade or so, and it’s an ugly one. It is The Movie That Thinks It Is Critiquing Misogyny But Is In Fact Indistinguishable From Misogyny. That’s a mouthful, so perhaps I’ll go with merely: Misogynist “Critique” Of Misogyny. Writer-director Alex Garland was an early perpetrator with his lady-sexbot drama Ex Machina, and now he makes a stunning return to form with his enraging yet monotonous Men.
I’m sure many women will see themselves in Jessie Buckley’s (Beast) Harper, who retreats from London to an English country village for a restorative holiday on her own. Something bad has happened between her and her partner, James (Paapa Essiedu: Murder on the Orient Express); his awfulness and the horror of how their relationship ended slowly unfurls in intermittent flashbacks. But if Harper had...
