The restructures, layoffs, cancellations and a maybe-strike currently impacting the U.S. TV industry rippled through the halls of the Berlinale Series Market this week as senior execs forecasted an international future.
Mass redundancies at the likes of Disney, AMC, Paramount and Netflix in recent months and major strategic rethinks from the studios and streamers were the talk of the market. Among the chatter was a sense this may lead to a wave of non-u.S. activity.
Shades of Blue creator Adi Hasak didn’t mince his words when he described U.S. TV as a “disaster zone” Monday. Hasak, who is currently making shows in Scandinavia and the Middle East, was heavily critical of Disney in particular for a strategy that he deemed akin to a “mental breakdown.”
And he wasn’t the only big name pointing to U.S. strife — albeit the others perhaps less forcefully.

Exclusive: Members of the first ever Berlinale Series Award jury have predicted that TV awards could soon rival film at the world’s major festivals.
Former Yes Studios boss Danna Stern, Moonlight star André Holland and Danish writer Mette Heeno sat down with Deadline on day one of the Series Market – the TV section of the European Film Market – to discuss their role choosing the debut Berlinale Series Award winner, which is the first ever TV series award at an A-list festival. They forecasted more recognition for the small screen in the not-too-distant future.
“I have been doing international TV for years and the fact that an A-list festival is finally recognizing us and putting us at the same level as big budget films and filmmakers is really special,” said Stern. “I hope [other festivals] will follow suit.”
Stern said the “time feels right” for TV to be put in the same category as film.

Year by year, the Berlin Film Festival’s drama series strand and market movers closer to center-stage. As in so many ways, Covid-19 may merely accelerate that process. The Zoo Palast Berlinale Series showcase no longer screen a time-consuming 20-minute taxi ride from the festival center, but online, its titles as accessible as festival movies.

The festival has announced the selection of series from Europe, South America and the USA, plus a standalone online platform for press screenings. Berlinale Series has revealed its 2020 line-up, which includes six TV shows from Europe, South America and the USA. The selection includes Sky's Me and the Others, an Austrian-German co-production created and directed by David Schalko; Russell T Davies' UK show It's a Sin, currently broadcast on Channel 4 and HBO Max with All3Media International; and the Swedish-Danish co-production Snow Angels, created by Mette Heeno for Svt and Dr. For the first time ever, two South American series are also part of the selection: the Argentinian HBO production Amongst Men and The Last Days of Gilda from Brazil. Moreover, Philly D.A., a US production by Oscar-nominated duo Josh Penn and Michael Gottwald, is the first documentary series to be invited into the programme. Meanwhile, Screendaily reports that.
The Berlin Film Festival has unveiled the six titles that will take part in the latest edition of Berlinale Series. The shows will screen online during the first week of March when the European Film Market runs, and the team are currently discussing plans for presenting some of the shows during the festival’s planned summer event.
The line-up includes Philly D.A., the strand’s first docuseries, which follows the most controversial District Attorney in the U.S. and will arrive from its premiere at Sundance. Deadline recently revealed that Dogwoof has boarded the project, which comes from Oscar-nominated duo Josh Penn and Michael Gottwald.

ABC has given back orders to Tuesday comedy series The Kids Are Alright and Splitting Up Together. With that, the network has picked up additional episodes of all of its fall series that did not have full-season orders.
ABC would not specify the size of the pickups for freshman Kids Are Alright and sophomore Splitting Up Together beyond calling them full-season orders. I hear Kids Are Alright has received a Back 9 order for a traditional 22-episode full season, while Splitting Up Together will produced five additional episodes for a 18-episode second season.
Kids Are Alright, from ABC Studios, has been the stronger ratings performer of the two, as the 1970s blue-collar family comedy, airing at 8:30 Pm, is benefiting from a stronger lead-in from The Conners. Romantic comedy Splitting Up Together, from Warner Bros TV, airs behind Black-ish at 9:30 Pm and regularly ranks as the least=watched ABC series...

- Quick Links > Anders Morgenthaler > Princess > Tartan Films > Echo It’s sure not Mary Poppins but Anders Morgenthaler is utilizing the techniques first pioneered by the family friendly Disney classic. Morgenthaler utilizes live action mixed with anime to blur the line between the worlds in deeper and darker ways than ever. His action drama Echo has secured $720,000 from New Danish Screen, the Danish Film Institute's organization promoting young and innovative cinema. Echo follows on the heels of his Directors Fortnight at Cannes release Princess, which has recently garnered internationally distribution rights under individual deals. Once again Morgenthaler teams up with Mette Heeno to pen the script, and the similarities are obvious. The controversial Princess, which also received support from the Dutch film institute, follows the story of August, whose sister goes from grandeur to decay in the porn industry, eventually dying of drug complications and leaving her 5 year old child.
- 8/4/2006
- IONCINEMA.com
CANNES -- Anders Morgenthaler is one angry cartoonist. The multi-talented Dane, among other things, creates and directs children's TV shows, writes and illustrates children's books and with a partner produces a daily comic strip with a large cult following. His first animated feature, Princess -- he previously made an acclaimed short "The Killing of a Japanese Photographer" -- is a revenge tragedy that attacks the porno industry with fierce animus.
Morgenthaler views this business not only as a monstrously abusive exploitation of people and their bodies, but the height of anti-eroticism and anti-art that demands a complete emotional disconnect between viewer and performer, a media that turns human beings into abstraction.
Princess makes a terrific festival film, but with careful promotion as an adult cartoon the film could enjoy a healthy theatrical career in select markets and make a strong DVD.
Morgenthaler certainly doesn't mind pushing hot buttons involving sex, violence and religion. His simple tale, written with Mette Heeno, has August, a clergyman, return home from missionary work following the death of his sister Christina, a porn star who goes by the name The Princess, due to drug abuse. He spirits her 5-year-old daughter Mia away from her prostitute guardian to his sparsely furnished flat where he promises to nurture and protect her.
As the two shed their initial wariness with each other, August comes to realize the child has also suffered abuse from her mother's "friends." Livid over this and the continuing exploitation of his dead sister's images, August issues a warning to the Paradise Lust porno company: Either destroy all videos and images of his sister or he will do it himself.
August's crusade against porn quickly assumes the manic dimensions of Travis Bickle's rampage against pimps in Taxi Driver, a bloodlust that sweeps both him and Mia into a maelstrom of violence that reminds us of the proverb that he who seeks revenge becomes the first victim.
The 1.2 million film takes its inspiration from Japanese anime, where drawings of locations and backgrounds are clean, clear and mostly static, bathed in complementary, mood-setting colors. The characters are modeled after the actors who play them. Blond and angular Thure Lindhardt plays August while the Princess is played by the young, innocent-faced Stine Fischer Christensen. Mira Hilli Moller Hallund is the feisty, dark-haired Mia.
Eighty percent of the film is animation with live-action video, supposedly taken by August in earlier days, fill us in on the backstory of their parents' deaths and the guilt the sibling feel, which probably lead to such extreme career choices.
Morgenthaler, who is 33, possesses a young man's anger and vehemence in his own crusade against porn. His images are stark and he is clearly unapologetic about taking such a strong point of view that shines through every image. This is an impressive feature debut for the Camera d'or jury to consider.
