Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail has assembled an impressive cast for his thriller Leave the World Behind that includes Julia Roberts (Homecoming), Ethan Hawke (The Black Phone), and Mahershala Ali (True Detective). Netflix will be giving the film a limited theatrical release on November 22nd, with the streaming release to follow on December 8th – but a premiere screening was recently held, and the embargo on reactions has been lifted. Judging by the first reactions that have made their way online, it looks like Leave the World Behind might make for a divisive viewing experience.
First, we have a few positive reactions that describe the film as “wildly riveting and entertaining” and “absolutely amazing”, saying it has a “smart script”:
Welp, I’m going to be obsessed with #LeaveTheWorldBehind. (Or I guess I already am?) What a uniquely and expertly crafted and photographed disaster/apocalyptic story. (I absolutely must read the book now.

In a galaxy far, far away, Guillermo del Toro might have once directed a Star Wars movie about Jabba the Hutt. In our galaxy, however, the project is one of many tantalizing features within the Star Wars universe that never came to fruition.
Speaking to Collider, the Oscar-winning filmmaker confirmed his potential Star Wars film was about the monstrous space gangster who made his first official appearance in “Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.”
“We had the rise and fall of Jabba the Hutt, so I was super happy,” del Toro said. “We were doing a lot of stuff, and then it’s not my property, it’s not my money, and then it’s one of those 30 screenplays that goes away. Sometimes I’m bitter, sometimes I’m not. I always turn to my team and say, ‘Good practice, guys. Good practice. We designed a great world.

Before Disney scrapped the idea, Guillermo Del Toro was poised to direct a Star Wars film centered on Jabba the Hutt.
The director confirmed the plans in an interview with Collider. The film was written by David Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy) about four years ago, but was ultimately canned for unexplained reasons.
“In the last moment, things go away. I’ve had it happen many, many, many times,” Del Toro said. “We had the rise and fall of Jabba the Hutt, so I was super happy. We were doing a lot of stuff, and then — it’s not my property, it’s not my money. It’s one of those 30 screenplays that goes away.”
Del Toro continued, “Sometimes I’m bitter, sometimes I’m not. I always turn to my team and say, ‘Good practice, guys. Good practice. We designed a great world, we designed great stuff, we learned.

You remember "Pacific Rim Uprising," don't you? The 2018 sequel at least had the good sense to continue telling stories in a world begging to become a franchise and also cast John Boyega in a much-deserved leading role, but still managed to squander its potential with a lackluster story, a bizarre and unflattering habit of setting all its major action sequences in broad daylight, and, most egregiously of all, the decision to move forward without director Guillermo del Toro's involvement. This has obviously been a sore spot for the acclaimed, monster-loving filmmaker, but we never quite got to the bottom of why things went down the way they did.
Until now, that is. "Pacific Rim" and its thrilling set pieces just turned 10 years old and, to mark the occasion, del Toro teamed up with Collider to host a special Q&a session after a recent screening of the original movie in glorious IMAX.

Guillermo del Toro sent “Star Wars” fans into a tizzy in late September when he confirmed on social media that he was once planning a trip to a galaxy far, far, away as the director of a “Star Wars” movie. The Oscar winner provided no further details at the time, but he’s now confirmed to Collider’s Steven Weintraub that his axed “Star Wars” movie centered on Jabba the Hutt. Considering del Toro’s love of monsters, it’s hardly a surprise he’d pick Jabba as the focal point for his own “Star Wars” movie.

The 2013 Guillermo del Toro-directed film “Pacific Rim” is something of a cult classic for fans of the sci-fi genre, many of whom were disappointed when del Toro didn’t return to direct the 2o18 sequel “Pacific Rim: Uprising.” In a new interview with Collider’s Steven Weintraub, the director reveals the reason he didn’t return for part two came down to a failure to pay a deposit for soundstages in Toronto, Canada.

Gareth Edwards’ hotly anticipated sci-fi epic The Creator has finally been unveiled for its first audience, with a press screening taking place Monday evening in Hollywood.
With full reviews of The Creator still to come, the first, albeit brief, reactions on social media have been pouring in following the screening and well ahead of the film’s Sept. 29 wide release. The consensus appears to be that The Creator could be a classic.
Judging by the early social media reaction from film journalists and critics, there is almost universal praise for the way The Creator looks and the stunning work of cinematographers Oren Soffer and Greig Fraser. Many of those who saw the film on Monday described it as one of 2023’s best films.
The Creator stars John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, Allison Janney and newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles.

Early reactions for the latest Disney+ "Star Wars" series, "Ahsoka," are rolling in, and critics and "Star Wars" fans who caught the first two episodes seem to be fairly impressed by the latest series — if not immediately blown away. So far, the Disney+ live-action "Star Wars" shows have been hit or miss, with "Andor" and "The Mandalorian" embraced for their uniqueness and stylistic flair, while "Obi-Wan" and "The Book of Boba Fett" garnered more mixed reactions.
"Ahsoka" in particular has a lot riding on its success, given that the animated series featuring Ahsoka Tano are some of the most beloved "Star Wars" properties of the 21st century. Rosario Dawson's live-action take on Anakin Skywalker's former Padawan was initially introduced in "The Mandalorian," but while Jon Favreau holds the reigns for that show, it's "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" mastermind Dave Filoni who's set to shepherd the new series as showrunner.

‘Blue Beetle,’ the third live-action DC movie this year and the 14th and second-to-last movie set in the DC Extended Universe, is less than a week away. Given how the previous two DC movies this year, ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ and ‘The Flash,’ both suffered commercial failures; the predicted numbers aren’t working in the upcoming movie’s favor. However, that doesn’t affect the movie’s reception from critics and fans, and from the first reactions, it seems like the fans are gearing up for another positively-received DC installment.
‘Blue Beetle’ was initially announced as the streaming movie for HBOMax before it was changed to have a theatrical release. ‘Cobra Kai’ star Xolo Maridueña was cast in the titular role, which makes him the first Latino actor to lead a superhero movie. The first reactions to Blue Beetle are in.
Fans and influencers are tweeting their impressions of the newest superhero title and the general takeway is this: Blue Beetle is a surprisingly solid superhero origin story with a winning performance by star Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) and plenty of heart, humor, and a warm embrace of Latin culture.
The new film, directed by Angel Manuel Soto, stars Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, who gains superpowered armor following an interaction with an alien scarab. It’s DC’s first film to center on a Latino superhero and the second-to-last project from DC’s old guard before James Gunn and Peter Safran took the reins (there’s still Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom coming in December). DC certainly hopes will break the superhero fatigue glut and perform better than the recent disappointment of The Flash.

It's a bit of an understatement to say that fans of the DC Universe haven't exactly enjoyed the smoothest or most consistent path to seeing their favorite comic book heroes translated to the big screen in recent years. The Zack Snyder era is well and truly in the rearview mirror, that weird in-between phase with no real guiding force to speak of is drawing to an end, and the James Gunn and Peter Safran regime is just about set to take over. All that turnover behind the scenes of Warner Bros. Discovery has left a serious amount of uncertainty in its wake, leading to a spate of severely underperforming blockbusters in a row and all sorts of chaos over which A-list actors will be returning in their iconic roles or not. Add in the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and it seemed as if DC's newest effort, "Blue Beetle,...

Gareth Edwards, Justin Simien, Louis Leterrier Share Hollywood War Stories, Talk Original Movies, AI
While their upcoming movies may not have had panels at 2023 San Diego Comic-Con, Gareth Edwards and Justin Simien, who respectively have sci-fi thriller Creator and Disney’s Haunted Mansion hitting theaters in the coming weeks, managed to give their projects a spotlight, despite the ongoing actors and writers strikes.
The filmmakers, who were part of a Directors on Directing panel hosted by film website Collider, were in Hall H on Disney’s dime, as they repeated several times, and tried to behave as best as they could when moderator Steven Weintraub asked a couple of thorny questions about marketing and studio notes.
The duo handled it well enough, although the real wild card on the panel was Louis Leterrier, the Fast X director who was a last-minute replacement for David Leitch.

Directors Say They Were ‘Contractually Obliged’ to Be at Comic-Con: ‘I Would Much Rather Be at Home’
Directors were among the few in the industry who were able to attend San Diego Comic-Con to promote their work this year, but that doesn’t mean they actually wanted to be there. In fact, directors Gareth Edwards and Justin Simien noted during their panel that they were there because they had to be.
Both men were part of Collider’s annual “Directors on Directing” panel in Hall H on Friday, moderated by Collider editor-in-chief Steven Weintraub, alongside panelist Louis Leterrier. Naturally, as the discussion progressed, the fact that both the WGA and SAG are on strike came up, as their absence has been distinctly felt.
When it did, Edwards — who was promoting the 20th Century Studios sci-fi film “The Creator” — made it explicitly clear that not only do he and his colleagues support those on strike, but added that they themselves were only there because they had to be.

Total Film editor Matt Maytum said the film left him “stunned” and called Cillian Murphy’s performance “sublime.” “An epic historical drama but with a distinctly Nolan sensibility: the tension, structure, sense of scale, startling sound design, remarkable visuals. Wow,” he added.
#Oppenheimer left me stunned: a character study on the grandest scale, with a sublime central performance by Cillian Murphy. An epic historical drama but with a distinctly Nolan sensibility: the tension, structure, sense of scale, startling sound design, remarkable visuals. Wow

The world has anxiously been awaiting the release of Tom Cruise’s latest series of death-defying stunts, and judging by the first reactions to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One… we’ve got a hell of an action film to look forward to. Although Dead Reckoning is the first part of a two-part story, it sounds as though it holds its own as a solid movie. I can’t wait to see this one on the big screen for myself. Tom Cruise rarely disappoints.
Check out the first reactions to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One below! We’ll keep this updated as more reactions come in from its premiere in Rome.
#MissionImpossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 is fantastic.
Dynamite, timely story. Excellent new characters. Huge variety of action and a final set piece that ranks top 2-3 all-time for the franchise.

The first reactions to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse have climbed to the web that is Twitter and they are just as fantastic as Spidey fans could hope for. While praise has been slung onto the storytelling, humor and character development, it’s the visuals that have truly dazzled moviegoers and built the most hype, with viewers saying it somehow one-ups those of 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
#SpiderMan #AcrossTheSpiderVerse defies its high expectations to spin a visually stunning next chapter that swings and soars. There’s a comforting resonating coming-of-age story that pairs well w/ the eye popping animation, music, darkness, and meta-humor. Absolutely Phenomenal pic.twitter.com/C0OjfqO03w

The first public screenings of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” were held Wednesday night, which means we’re now also seeing the first public reactions to the film.
And in case you had any doubts, praise for the animated film, the first sequel to 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” is effusive. Just shy, in fact, of universally acclaimed by the people who saw it.
“One step above Masterpiece. It’s an actual work of art,” writes Sean O’Connell of Cinemablend.
Reel Blend co-host Jame Hamilton says it’s “darker, more powerful and better in every way” than its predecessor.
TheWrap’s Drew Taylor calls it “a stunning achievement”. Yes, it’s” that is “visually dazzling,” but adds that “the movie’s real superpower is its emotional depth and its beautiful, melancholic tone.”

We're a little over a week out from the release of "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" — the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2018 Oscar-winning movie — and the first reactions to the film have arrived on social media. And according to critics who were lucky enough to catch an early screening, "Across the Spider-Verse" is "terrific," an "incredible accomplishment," and the "ultimate Spider-Man experience." As you might've expected, everyone is going ga-ga over the work put into the animation, noting how it's "impossible to see it all [and] experience it all in one sitting."
Collider's Steven Weintraub echoed that with his reaction: "Absolutely loved ['Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.'] Wanted to push pause about a hundred times to study the incredible artistry on display. Cannot recommend this film enough and already looking forward to seeing it again." Characters being highlighted include "Get Out" star Daniel Kaluuya's Hobart "Hobie" Brown/Spider-Punk who uses a guitar as a weapon,...

The first reactions are in for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” with critics and journalists saying the film is “an actual work of art” while also “darker and sadder” than expected.
The long-awaited sequel to 2018’s highly successful animated adventure “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” “Across the Spider-Verse” picks up over a year after the events of the first film. Miles Morales/ Spider-Man (Shameik Moore) is approached by Gwen Stacy/ Spider-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld) to help her complete a mission that will save every universe from supervillain the Spot (Jason Schwartzman). Together, Miles and Gwen travel through the Multiverse, where they encounter the Spider-Society, led by Miguel O’Hara (Oscar Isaac).
CinemaBlend managing editor Sean O’Connell wrote on Twitter that the film “lives one step above Masterpiece. It’s an actual work of art. Every frame deserves to be hung in a museum. The jokes and nods to Spidey lore are perfect.”
Ok.

On the same day TheWrap broke the news exclusively that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has returned to the “Fast and Furious” franchise, the film had one of its first screenings, and you know what that means: The first reactions are in.
So how do viewers feel about “Fast X,” the latest installment of the retroactively named “Fast Saga”? Is the #Family thrilled? Or did the new Dom Toretto and Friends adventure blow a gasket?
To answer that question, it seems some people loved it, some people noted a lot of flaws, and as is usual for this series, often they were the same people. But everyone seems to agree that Jason Momoa is an absolute delight as the film’s villain, and that the spectacle rules.
“Jason Momoa is a high front runner for Best Supporting Actor at next years Oscars,” The Atom Review crowed.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has finally been unveiled for its first audience, with the Hollywood premiere as well as press screenings taking place Thursday evening. The first reactions are pouring in ahead of the film’s May 5 release.
This is the final Marvel Studios film from writer-director James Gunn, who became a top director with the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie and has risen to take the top job as co-head of DC Studios in the intervening years.
The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff and Sean Gunn, who star alongside franchise newcomers Will Poulter and Chukwudi Iwuji.
Much of the cast has been together for a decade, and this is the end of the road for many of them. Bautista and Saldaña have both stated they are through with their characters. “I don’t think this is the end for the Guardians.

First reactions to The Flash are quickly racing onto social media. Select members of the press and guests of CinemaCon experienced DC’s latest superhero epic earlier this evening, with the movie garnering some of the most positive reactions I’ve ever seen. Speaking with JoBlo’s Chris Bumbray after the screening, he described the film as “fantastic.” Others in my socials and DMs are screaming, telling me I’m in for the “ride of my life” when the movie hits theaters on June 16, 2023. I’m not jealous. I’m not jealous at all.
While combing Twitter for reactions to the Scarlet Speedster’s latest adventure, I’ve gathered many comments and observations about the Andy Muschietti-directed odyssey into the Dcu.

The Flash sped into CinemaCon, with Warner Bros. screening the DC film for theater owners nearly two months ahead of its June 16 release.
The Flash has been the talk of the convention, and earlier in the day, Warners made the film the closer of its presentation, with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav saying of the feature: “It’s the best superhero movie I’ve ever seen.” (The executive has watched it three times.)
Peter Safran, co-head of DC Studios, praised star Ezra Miller ahead of the screening, as did director Andy Muschietti, who said, “I discovered they are an incredible comedian and also [handled] all the action required for a big spectacle like this. They wanted to do all the stunts, and I let them.”
Miller stars in dual roles as different versions of Barry Allen, with Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck playing different versions of Batman. Sashe Calle stars as Supergirl,...

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves premiered on Friday at SXSW and the early reviews are praising the characters, creatures, action, and even humor. Notably, some of the reviews are even saying that Honor Among Thieves might not just be for fans of the roleplaying game, but has potential to crossover to even those who have never pulled an all-nighter in a dingy, Mountain Dew-soaked basement.

“John Wick: Chapter 4” officially bowed at its London premiere Monday evening, with the social media reactions embargo lifting during the event.
The fourth entry picks up following the end of “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,” which saw Keanu Reeves’ infamous assassin take a tumble from atop the Continental Hotel after being betrayed by his confidante Winston (Ian McShane). Of course, Wick lives. “Chapter 4” finds the deadly pariah traveling the globe to free himself from the rule of the elusive, cutthroat High Table.
The critical darling action series has drawn strong praise in its first round of reactions, especially for its deep bench of sparring partners that includes Donnie Yen, Hiroyuki Sanada, Marko Zazor, Scott Adkins and Rina Sawayama. Another central topic of opinion is the film’s runtime, which clocks in at a lengthy two hours and 49 minutes — 38 minutes longer than the previous entry’s.

In a little less than three weeks, John Wick (Keanu Reeves) will be back in theaters doing what he does best, which mostly revolves around killing dozens of baddies at once with anything and everything he can get his hands on. As you might imagine, the first reactions to John Wick: Chapter 4 are full of praise for the sequel’s incredible action and magnificent set pieces, with some even calling it the best of the franchise. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” first reactions set social media abuzz following its Los Angeles premiere, but Marvel’s first Phase 5 installment saw many critics underwhelmed by the story… and delighted to greet Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror.
Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lily return as Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man, and Hope van Dyne, aka the Wasp, with a new mission to further explore the Quantum Realm. Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer reprise their respective roles as the van Dyne scientists and original Ant-Man and the Wasp, while Kathryn Newton (“Freaky”) makes her Marvel debut as the older version of Scott’s daughter Cassie.
Yet it’s clear “Quantumania” belongs to ruler Kang, with Majors’ performance marked as a standout turn. Rounding out the cast are David Dastmalchian, William Jackson Harper, Katy O’Brian, and Bill Murray, with Peyton Reed returning to direct. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” opens in theaters...

Invited guests, Instagram influencers, and junketeers were given the all-clear to give “social sentiment” (and actual phrase used by movie studios) concerning their first look at “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” Peyton Reed’s third film in the zippy, Paul Rudd-led Marvel franchise. The latest entry is set predominantly in the CG swirl of the “quantum realm,” so it’s likely there won’t be as many big-then-small-then-big chase scenes through San Francisco in this one.
The early reports were positive, particularly focusing on Jonathan Majors as the villain, Kang.

For a long while, it felt as if Black Panther: Wakanda Forever would never come. Yes, the Marvel Studios sequel to one of 2018’s biggest movies—and the first superhero film ever to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar—was greenlit, and, sure, Ryan Coogler wrote and rewrote his screenplay, with cameras rolling in Georgia and everything. But in the immediate aftermath of the monumental loss of Chadwick Boseman, it seemed difficult to fully accept. How could they continue without that central, indispensable performance?
As it turns out, it would be by sincerely honoring to it. When the first teaser for Black Panther 2 dropped earlier this year, the extent to which Coogler, who returned to direct the sequel as well as co-write the movie alongside Joe Robert Cole, had turned the project into a tribute to the T’Challa character, and more poignantly Boseman, only began to be felt.

Disney and Marvel Studios finally unveiled Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” at the film’s world premiere in Hollywood on Wednesday evening. First reactions are emerging online now and they are overwhelmingly positive. It appears there wasn’t a dry eye in the theater during the film’s 160-minute runtime.
Anticipation for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” has been sky high. The first entry was one of the biggest hits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, grossing 700 million at the domestic box office and 1.3 billion worldwide. “Black Panther” also became the first comic book movie nominated for best picture at the Oscars.
The sequel, which pits the nation of Wakanda against Namor and the undersea nation of Talokan, stars Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Dominique Thorne, Florence Kasumba, Michaela Coel, Tenoch Huerta, Martin Freeman and Angela Bassett. The film’s events follow the death of King T’Challa,...

The first reactions to Jordan Peele’s “Nope” are pouring in as the movie continues its premiere in Los Angeles, earning praises for the director’s turn to science-fiction and drawing comparison to filmmakers like Steven Spielberg.
Expectations are high for “Nope,” given Peele’s emergence as one of the most beloved directors over the last five years. His film debut, “Get Out,” earned four Oscar nominations, including best picture, director for Peele and actor for Kaluuya. Peele won the Academy Award for original screenplay. The film’s 255 million worldwide gross was matched by Peele’s follow-up, “Us,” which was praised by critics and sent fans into spirals of theories and explainers.
Even though he’s built a brand for himself with only two films, Peele assured that he went into “Nope” relatively unfettered by audiences’ expectations of him.
“We tried to make a big summer blockbuster that you can enjoy whatever you want,...

This article contains spoilers for Marvel’s Loki.
Are you ready to ponder What If…? Some lucky people have already done so by getting early access to the first few episodes of Marvel’s upcoming animated series, and they’ve now taken to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the show before it debuts. Reactions for the latest Disney+ project are a little bit more mixed than the streamer’s live-action fare to date, but it looks like we’re in for a wile ride nonetheless.
What If…? springboards off the season finale of the Tom Hiddleston-led series Loki, which opened up a can of multiverse worms for both new and established characters of the MCU. Following the recreation of the Marvel multiverse, What If…? will go on to explore various branching timelines that are no longer being pruned by the Tva to halt the arrival of infinite Kangs,...

Task Force X is back for another deadly mission in The Suicide Squad. Under the auspices of Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, a team of mainly C-list DC villains, led by Idris Elba’s Bloodsport and Margot Robbie’s endlessly charming Harley Quinn, will once again face insurmountable odds, which include plenty of explosions, dismemberments, and even a classic Justice League villain.
Described as a “war caper film” by Gunn, the director’s take on DC’s zaniest misfits and outcasts retains much of the gritty tone of David Ayer’s 2016 entry while also introducing the comedic timing that has become a signature of Gunn’s directorial style. The trailers released so far tease an extremely violent movie with plenty of laughs in between.
A band of misfits who learn to work together by facing a challenge much bigger than themselves sounds like familiar territory for Gunn, who...

Warner Bros. gave select fans and critics an early look at “The Suicide Squad” on Wednesday night at LA Live in downtown Los Angeles, and the first reactions spilling out on social media are enthusiastic bordering on hyperbolic.
Now first, as always, it’s wise to take these things with a grain of salt. Studios curate very early movie previews — “The Suicide Squad” doesn’t hit theaters until Aug. 6 — to maximize hype. Plenty of times fans have poured out of a screening of a movie with gushing praise, only for the film to turn out to be terrible.
But uh, that said, this movie was written and directed by the always excellent James Gunn. And frankly, we’re highly inclined to assume whatever praise comes in for the guy behind “Sliver,” “Super” and of course the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise is, if anything, not extravagant enough. Which is to say,...

Superman actor Henry Cavill says in a new interview that he is “not shooting anything additional” for the Zack Snyder cut of 2017’s “Justice League.”
“Not shooting anything additional. No. It’s all stuff that has been already done,” Cavill said in an interview with Collider’s Steven Weintraub while promoting “Enola Holmes.” “Obviously I don’t know how things are going to evolve and change and adapt depending on now a different length of movie and whatever may happen in post-production. Whatever lessons may be learned from what is it four years since Justice League came out? Four years’ worth of fan reaction. For me…I’m now just watching the party.”
Despite initial reports suggesting otherwise, Zack Snyder’s cut of “Justice League” will contain brand new footage after all. The director will be conducting a week of additional filming with the main cast of the film, an...

Little by little we are getting pieces of what we can expect this year at San Diego Comic-Con. This will be my first year, and I am so freaking excited I can hardly stand it.
