The Cinematographers Guild’s officer and board elections are underway, and the group will have a new president in May, as incumbent John Lindley isn’t seeking re-election.
The election season kicks off today – the deadline for submission of written nominations – and the guild will hold a membership and nominations meeting on Sunday. Voting begins April 13 and ends May 12.
The guild, IATSE Local 600, is IATSE’s largest and one of three with national jurisdiction, along with the Editors Guild and the Art Directors Guild.
The guild’s previous election, held in May 2019, saw the defeat of four of the guild’s top incumbent officers, including longtime president Seven Poster, as well as its incumbent 1st national vice president, national secretary-treasurer, and assistant national secretary-treasurer.
Lewis Rothenberg, who defeated Poster for the presidency, quit the non-paying job after only nine months, however, citing “differences” with the senior staff. Upon his resignation,...

Dues relief during the coronavirus crisis is coming to members of the International Cinematographers Guild, Iatse Local 600. In a video message to his members, newly elected Icg president John Lindley said that the guild is also considering an expansion of its Hardship Fund to account for loss of income due to the industry’s Covid-19 shutdown.
“The question I’ve been asked a lot lately is about the possibility of dues relief for our membership,” Lindley said on the video. “I’ve called a special meeting of the national executive board for next Wednesday, March 2. We’re gonna talk about our resources and we’re gonna figure out how to allocate them for the benefit of the members, and I’m certain that some form of dues relief will come out of that meeting. “Field of Dreams” cinematographer John Lindley has been elected at the new national president of the International Cinematographers Guild, a month after Lewis Rothenberg resigned from the post.
The news was announced Sunday following an online meeting of the national executive board. He will serve for the remaining two years and two months of Rothenberg’s term. Rothenberg, who was elected over incumbent Steven Poster last May, left the post partly due to his refusal to change his legal residence from New Jersey to Los Angeles, as required by the local rules.
Lindley was the second national vice president of the guild and has served on the national executive board for 13 years. His feature film cinematography credits include “Pleasantville,” “You’ve Got Mail,” and “Sneakers,” while his recent credits include “Castle Rock,” “Unbelievable,” “Divorce” and “Snowfall.”

Lewis Rothenberg has resigned as president of the Cinematographers Guild, Iatse Local 600, citing differences with the union’s senior staff and national officers.
Rothenberg’s departure, announced Friday, stemmed partly from his refusal to change his legal residence from New Jersey to Los Angeles, as required by the local rules.
He defeated incumbent Steven Poster last May for a three-year term. Poster had been the elected head of the Icg since 2006, but Rothenberg won the position through a campaign that promised more organizing and better communication with the membership, which numbers more than 8,700 and is the largest Iatse local in Hollywood, repping camera crews and publicists.

Cinematographers Guild president Steven Poster lost his bid for reelection last month, which will soon bring an end to his 13-year reign as Hollywood’s longest serving union president. In an exclusive exit interview with Deadline, he reflects on his legacy, and looks ahead to the future of the guild and the industry. His last day in office will be June 22, although he’ll continue to serve on the guild’s executive board.
“I’m very proud of the work that has been done over the last 13 years,” he said. “We really took a union on the brink of a very difficult time, and we have turned it into one of the strongest (Iatse) locals in the bargaining unit, and the legacy of craft and safety and technology and dedication to trade unionism is something that I will never, ever forget, and I’ll be very proud of it for all my days to come.

Lewis Rothenberg has been elected to a three-year term as president of the powerful International Cinematographers Guild, ousting incumbent Steven Poster from a post he had held since 2006.

Ballots will go out Tuesday in the election of officers for Iatse Cinematographers Guild Local 600. Steven Poster, who’s been president of the guild since 2006, is being challenged by Paul Ferrazzi, its former national secretary-treasurer, and Lewis Rothenberg, the guild’s former national vice president. Typically, in three-way union elections, the advantage goes to the incumbent, with dissident votes being split among the challengers. Ballots will be counted May 3.
Poster and Ferrazzi have been political rivals for more than a decade. Ferrazzi had been the local’s national secretary-treasurer in 2006 when Poster filed charges against Gary Dunham, the guild’s president, accusing him of violating the authority of the guild’s national executive board by posting a statement on the guild’s website urging members to reject ratification of a new film and TV contract.
