John Lennon‘s “Give Peace a Chance” has some odd lyrics, but its overall message seems pretty straightforward. Leave it to Yoko Ono to make things a little more avant-garde! She had an unusual interpretation of the song. She also revealed her personal philosophy.
Yoko Ono felt John Lennon’s ‘Give Peace a Chance’ was about the future
The book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono features an interview from 1980. In it, John said he and Yoko wanted “Give Peace a Chance” to help people imagine a better future. “I think it’s not so much we, if you meant the two of us, but all of us are part of the future,” Yoko interjected. “The future is already within us. I think that the world is going around and is alive because some people really know that whatever they think really happens.

Short subjects willing to tackle tough subjects made the final cut with the Academy this year. That means audiences buying tickets to the “2024 Oscar Nominated Short Films: Animation” program should brace for poetic treatments of uncomfortable topics, ranging from incest to the Holocaust. Since the toon shorts tend to run short (just an hour to get through the noms), ShortsTV’s theatrical roster includes two additional “highly commended” titles, ending on a musical up note with “The Little Mermaid” co-director John Musker’s “I’m Hip.”

Welcome to the Beatles Cinematic Universe. Continuing the current wave of music biopics — which just saw its most recent box-office triumph with Bob Marley: One Love — director Sam Mendes (Skyfall) has signed on to helm not one, but four separate Beatles biopics, all due in 2027. The movies, set to begin production next year, will each focus a single Beatle’s perspective, so John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and even Ringo Starr each get a turn in the spotlight.

One of the songs Paul McCartney wrote as a teenager became a hit for another band. What a prodigy he was! John Lennon said the tune in question played an important role in The Beatles’ career.
A Paul McCartney song appeared on a special Beatles tape
The book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono features an interview from 1980. In it, John was asked about the track “Like Dreamers Do.” While the tune was credited to the Lennon-McCartney songwriting partnership, it was first released by a British band called The Applejacks.
“That’s Paul,” John said. “That was another one that he’d written as a teenager and sort of resurrected and polished up for later on. That’s on the audition tape that we sent Decca, which is around as a bootleg. I sing ‘To Know Her Is to Love Her...

John Lennon met Paul McCartney and George Harrison when they were teenagers, and they performed together in The Beatles all through their 20s. When Lennon left The Beatles, he said he did it because he wanted to be able to grow up. He didn’t think it was possible to do this while in the band.
John Lennon said he felt he couldn’t mature in The Beatles
In 1969, Lennon told his bandmates that he no longer wanted to be in The Beatles. His life had been intertwined with his bandmates’ for so long and he was ready for a break.
“We’re all individuals. And in The Beatles we grew out of it,” Lennon said in The Beatles Anthology. “The bag was too small. I can’t impose far-out films or far-out music on George and Paul if they don’t want to do it. Vice versa, Paul can...

If you are aiming to win your Oscar pool you may feel relatively safe right about now predicting, as most are, a sweep by Oppenheimer — especially after its overwhelming showing last week winning seven BAFTA Awards, the DGA honor for Christopher Nolan the week before that, and on Saturday sweeping three of the five movie awards at SAG and winning the top prize last night at the PGA Awards.
However, key to actually winning your pool will not be those marquee feature film categories but rather the three shorts races that run under the radar, but can spell the difference in triumphing over all others in whatever pool you enter. So who could — or should, for these purposes — prevail in the Documentary Shorts, Animated Shorts and Live Action Shorts contests this year? Shorts TV in association with distributor Magnolia Pictures has, as usual, put all of them in theatrical release across the country,...

After a year hit with Hollywood strikes and an early buzz positioning Christopher Nolan’s drama about the creation of the atomic bomb as a frontrunner, sentiments from more than a dozen Oscar voters on the first day of final voting revealed a strong backing for Nolan. “Nolan fucking deserves it,” an anonymous voter emphasizes to Variety, highlighting the widespread acclaim for Nolan’s direction and billion-dollar blockbuster.
Furthermore, Robert Downey Jr., a nominee for supporting actor, appears to be a strong frontrunner for his first Oscar, with a significant majority of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) voters indicating their support for him.
It’s important to note that many voters interviewed have yet to cast their ballots, and plan to do so over the weekend after watching more films. Also, this is merely a small sample of the nearly 10,000 eligible AMPAS voters. Nonetheless, Sandra Hüller...

There exist three Oscar categories where it’s possible to watch all nominated films in one shot – that’s shorts, Animated, Live Action and Documentary. Packaged into three feature length films presented by ShortsTV, the Oscar Nominated Short Films open in theaters today for a four-week run on about 650 screens in the U.S. and Canada.
It’s 19-year tradition popular with audiences and theaters. Each film is also “an event. Then you can go argue about who you think should win,” says ShortsTV founder and CEO Carter Pilcher.
Theater owners can screen any or all of the three compilations however and whenever they want from a traditional run to a one-week marathon before the Academy Awards on March 10.
Pilcher says the animated bundle tends to do the best historically, although the 2023 short called My Year Of Dicks nudged out some of the family audiences that love animation, giving Live Action the win.

“Only ignorant fools say ‘ninja.’” So claims Taki, the mysterious matron of the Tawara family, as she sternly corrects her grandson in the old ways. Played by veteran actress Nobuko Miyamoto, there’s much more to Grandma Taki than meets the eye. Such is the way of the world in Netflix’s new series, House of Ninjas. The proper term is “shinobi.” It’s what was used historically.
House of Ninjas is a new action dramedy that follows a modern-day shinobi family who has forsaken the lethal trade of their ancestors for a “normal” life. And like in every dramedy, the Tawaras are comically and tragically dysfunctional. The family patriarch, Soichi (Yosuke Eguchi) struggles to maintain a low-key profile whilst his wife Yoko (Tae Kimura) and daughter Nagi (Aju Makita) succumb to their old devious habits, stealing stuff just for the rush. Their thievery goes from grocery store shoplifting to museum art object theft.

The Beatles‘ “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” is one of the most mysterious-sounding songs in rock history. Paul McCartney explained one of its secrets to Taylor Swift. Notably, Paul’s approach to writing the track wasn’t that different from the way Swift pens some of her music. John Lennon refuted a misconception about the tune.
What Paul McCartney told Taylor Swift about The Beatles’ ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’
In a 2020 Rolling Stone, Swift and Paul interviewed each other. Swift revealed she decided to use her favorite words in her songs, even if they weren’t radio-friendly. Some of these words included “marzipan,” “divorcée,” “elegies,” and “epiphany.” She said she had lists and lists of her favorite words. She also discussed looking through books to find words she could use in her tunes.

When The Beatles broke up, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, were on decidedly bad terms. They were embroiled in a legal battle and spoke publicly about their gripes with one another. One of Lennon’s biggest problems with his bandmates was how unwelcoming they were to Yoko Ono. While it angered him, he still said he could understand their frustration.
John Lennon understood why his Beatles bandmates were unhappy with him
Lennon and Ono were incredibly close, both emotionally and physically. She joined him in the studio, to the irritation of the other Beatles.
“He just wanted to go off in the corner and look into Yoko’s eyes for hours, saying to each other, ‘It’s going to be all right,’” McCartney said in The Beatles Anthology. “It was pretty freaky when we were trying to make a track.”

The annual Oscar nominations lunch is always about the same thing: measuring the applause when the Academy rep calls each nominee down to the riser for the class photo. This year, 179 nominees and four international director nominees made the trek to the Beverly Hilton.
It’s always the celebrities who merit the biggest cheers. Snubbed actress Margot Robbie, on hand as the producer of “Barbie,” and snubbed director Greta Gerwig, on hand as the film’s co-writer, got enthusiastic applause. One theory has a sympathy vote driving a win for Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach for Adapted Screenplay over frontrunner “Oppenheimer,” which after all, has 13 chances to win over the eight for “Barbie.”
Actress frontrunner Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) got a big round, along with her old “La La Land” costar Ryan Gosling (resplendent in a “Barbie”-friendly pink suit), who was delighted to meet Messi, the blue-eyed dog from “Anatomy of a Fall.

John Lennon wrote the sweeping lullaby “Good Night” for the White Album, but he didn’t sing the song. Typically, he would sing the songs he wrote, but he passed this one off to Ringo Starr. According to Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick, this was a shame. He explained that Lennon sang a beautiful demo of the song. He didn’t find Starr’s version of the song nearly as impressive.
John Lennon let Ringo Starr sing lead on a song he wrote
Work on the White Album was, for the most part, a nightmare for everyone involved. Band relations were frosty when they weren’t outright hostile, and everyone in the studio was exhausted and fed up. Therefore, the introduction of Lennon’s “Good Night” came as a pleasant surprise.

Many musicians have praised John Lennon for shaping their careers, but Todd Rundgren is not among them. After Rundgren made some less-than-flattering remarks about the former Beatle in an interview, Lennon lashed out. In a scathingly hilarious open letter, Lennon addressed Rundgren’s problems with him.
John Lennon wrote an open letter to Todd Rundgren
In 1974, Rundgren met Lennon at the Troubadour Club in Los Angeles. Lennon was in the middle of his drunken “lost weekend” — the 18-month period during which he was separated from Yoko Ono — and did not make the best impression. Several months later, Rundgren addressed their meeting and the lingering bad feeling it left him in an interview with Melody Maker.
“John Lennon ain’t no revolutionary,” Rundgren said, per the book The John Lennon Letters. “He’s a f***ing idiot.”
It didn’t take long for Lennon to discover the interview and respond to Rundgren.

John Lennon had a problem with more than one Beatles album. He discussed it openly in the studio and, when the band broke up, in interviews. While he didn’t have as much of a problem with Let It Be, he admitted that the album wasn’t quite finished. He didn’t think this was a detriment to the album, though.
John Lennon said a Beatles album was never finished
By the time The Beatles broke up, their dynamic had chilled considerably. Lennon said that working together was painful.
“It’s torture every time we have to produce anything,” he said, per the book Lennon On Lennon: Conversations With John Lennon. “Any artist, poet, anything, whatever you call yourselves, listening know what it’s like. Well, the Beatles haven’t got any magic you haven’t got. We suffer like hell every time we make anything … And we’ve got each other to contend with.
