Keith Giffen, known both as a comic book writer and artist whose characters have appeared in live-action franchises from Marvel and DC Comics, has died. He was 70 years old and had worked in comics since 1976.
Giffen was known for having a hand in the creation of characters including Lobo, Guardians of the Galaxy furry teammate Rocket Raccoon and the modern Jaime Reyes version of Blue Beetle. He also wrote acclaimed runs of “Justice League” and the “Legion of Super-Heroes,” as well as creating the cult fourth-wall-breaking character Ambush Bug (a decade earlier than Deadpool).
He died Sunday of a stroke, according to media reports (first reported by Bleeding Cool), but the news of his death wasn’t made public until Wednesday evening.
The comic creator often brought a wry sense of humor to his work. That included a posthumous Facebook post he’d arranged to have put up Wednesday after his death,...

Keith Giffen, the veteran comics author and artist who co-created characters such as DC’s Lobo and the Jamie Reyes version of the Blue Beetle as well as Marvel’s Rocket Raccoon, has died. He was 70.
Giffen’s family announced his death on Facebook Wednesday via a sardonic post pre-written by the comic book writer-artist: “I told them I was sick…Anything not to go to New York Comic Con, Thankx,’ adding “Bwah ha ha ha ha.”
His death was affirmed by longtime collaborator Paul Levitz. “The sad news is now official: Keith Giffen has gone off to create new worlds that are beyond our living reach,” Levitz wrote on Facebook. “Keith was probably the most fertile creative mind of our generation in comics. He had an infinite number of ideas, pouring constantly out.”
Levitz continued, “We did over 60 stories together. Many of them he made far better than they...

It’s taken the better part of two decades for DC’s Blue Beetle, aka Jaime Reyes, to make the belated jump from the comic-book pages to big-screen multiplexes. Created in 2006 by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner, Reyes became the first Latino character to headline his own, albeit short-lived, comic-book series. The third DC character to adopt the “Blue Beetle” name, Reyes’s origin story diverged significantly from his under-powered predecessors, melding familiar comic-book tropes with a firmly etched supporting cast of characters. That the characters were Reyes’s extended family and not just a random assortment of friends, acquaintances, and occasional hangers-on added a new, fresh element to comic books at the time. Working from a surprisingly layered screenplay...

When Angel Manuel Soto got the call from Warner Bros. about directing a DC movie, his mind was miles away from Blue Beetle. “I wanted to pitch ideas, and one of them was the Bane origin story,” Soto tells Den of Geek magazine. “I always thought that there was something interesting in exploring his reality and how a character like that comes to be.” He quickly found out, though, that “the conversation was not about that.” Instead, the studio had a more youthful and heroic figure in mind, telling Soto, “There’s this character that we’ve been developing for a couple of years. The Blue Beetle, a Latino superhero.”

Marvel Comics' "Planet of the Apes" #3. available June 14, 2023 is written by David F. Walker and illustrated by Dave Wachter, with covers by Joshua Cassara, Cully Hamner and Alan Quah:
"...What lies beyond the sea? What is a life filled with immense loss and pain? A life watching the world wither away as the 'Alz-113' virus consumes humanity?
"For some, it is an existence of boiling rage that breeds contempt, cruelty and violence. It breeds the 'Exercitus Viri'.
"As 'Juliana' and 'Omatete' set sail to transfer a thousand apes from the 'International Simian Research Center' in Ghana to the 'CDC', trouble brews in the seas.
"Will they be able to make their voyage unscathed and save humanity? Or will the blood-thirsty vengeance of a select few ruin the world's chance of a cure and with it, survival?..."

After a series of DC films with messy rollouts and behind-the-scenes drama — see “Black Adam,” “Shazam: Fury of the Gods,” and especially June’s “The Flash” — August will see the studio introducing a scrappy new superhero (hopefully) worth rooting for. He’s Blue Beetle (Aka Jaime Reyes), played in the big summer blockbuster by Xolo Maridueña, best known for Netflix’s “Cobra Kai.”
The character of Blue Beetle was first created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner for the 2006 event “Infinite Crisis.” An ordinary teenager from a Mexican-American family, Jaime’s life unexpectedly changes when his friend Jenny (Bruna Marquezine) entrusts him with a strange extraterrestrial mechanical scarab. The device grafts onto him, giving him the ability to access a powerful exoskeleton capable of fighting crime.
But his possession of the scarab also puts him in direct conflict with Susan Sarandon’s Victoria Kord, an executive who will...

The long-awaited trailer for DC’s “Blue Beetle” movie is finally here, as an ancient artifact “the scarab,” takes hold of Jaime Reyes and transforms the teenager into a superhero.
The kicker is that Reyes’ “transformation” isn’t a solo affair as in most comic book origin stories, but he transforms into an armored superhero in front of his family, a Latino family nonetheless!
Upon his transformation, the suit thrusts Reyes into the atmosphere and the teenager soars into space within seconds while he ponders his fate. Watch the video above.

Jaime Reyes is coming to the Dceu, and the character’s striking Blue Beetle costume has never looked better! Warner Bros. has been putting a lot behind their upcoming Blue Beetle movie, and it’s definitely showing in the first look at the elaborate costume in live action.
Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) plays Jaime Reyes, a teenager from El Paso, TX who finds an alien “scarab” that bonds with him, manifests a suit of high tech armor, and grants him super powers. Created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner during DC’s Infinite Crisis event back in 2006, Blue Beetle’s sleek, almost Tokusatsu-influenced design seems like it was destined for the screen almost from its inception. But despite appearing in numerous DC animated projects (notably Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Young Justice), Beetle’s only live action appearance so far came in Smallville season 10, episode 18, “Booster...

By all accounts DC have a lot riding on their Future State line of books, which will see print in January and February of this year. DC have essentially replaced their normal DC Universe books with books set in the future, allowing them fresh takes on characters and books. If unsuccessful, I’m sure they’ll tell us it was a bit of fun but not their bread and butter. If successful, as they are hoping, expect to see some new ongoing titles in a new future imprint. As a wise man once said, there’s nothing new under the Sun, so this has all been done in various shapes and sizes down the years of course, but it’s usually highly entertaining stuff. Some of my favourite stories from back in the day were the Mr.

The first issue of Marvel’s Yondu solo series is due out this week and, thanks to this preview page, we now know that it’ll kill off one of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Well, at least one of the Guardians in the McU.
Yondu, which will follow the 21st century version of the character closely based on Michael Rooker’s portrayal in the movies rather than the classic iteration, begins with the Ravager captain answering a distress call by one of his space pirate cohorts. In these pages, it’s confirmed that Yondu arrives too late to help out, with Kraglin – and many other Ravagers – already dead.

The Dceu will grow to include a Blue Beetle movie, making Jaime Reyes the first Latino superhero to headline a movie.
There's a Blue Beetle movie coming, as Warner Bros. continues to keep the Dceu alive and well.
Jaime Reyes is a teenager who finds a mysterious, magically powered scarab, that soon binds with his body, allowing him to manifest a powerful exoskeleton, fly, and project energy. A little bit Power Rangers, a little bit classic DC superhero, it's easy to see how Blue Beetle will translate to the screen. The Wrap reports that Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (the upcoming remake of Miss Bala) has landed the writing job, and Zev Foreman will produce. The Jaime Reyes version of Blue Beetle was created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner in 2005.
There's a legacy element to Jaime's story, as well. That magical scarab once belonged to Dan Garrett,...

DC and Warner Bros. are developing the superhero movie “Blue Beetle,” based on the Mexican-American comic book character Jaime Reyes.
The studio has tapped Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who wrote Universal’s “Scarface” remake, to pen the “Blue Beetle” screenplay. Zev Foreman is executive producing the film for Warner Bros.
The original Blue Beetle character, which debuted in 1939, had superpowers derived from a sacred scarab. He first manifested himself as Dan Garrett, a police officer who fought crime with superpowers. The second version of Blue Beetle was Ted Kord, Garrett’s student who continued costumed crime-fighting, but had no superpowers.
Reyes was created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner, and made his first appearance in a 2006 comic, when he discovered the Blue Beetle scarab — which came alive, grafted itself to the base of his spine, and provided him with a suit of extraterrestrial armor. Reyes worked with Kord’s former teammate and best friend,...

Over the past few years we’ve seen DC’s Blue Beetle pop up as a film and a TV series that Warner Bros. would like to make. Well, it looks like the time has come.
According to The Wrap, the studio is currently developing the film which will feature their first lead Latino superhero character, Jaime Reyes a.k.a. the Blue Beetle. Mexican-born writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer has been hired to write the script. He previously worked on Universal’s Scarface along with the upcoming Miss Bala remake for Sony.
I imagine this means that Greg Berlanti’s Booster Gold/Blue Beetle isn’t going to be happening any time soon.
In the comics, “Mexican-American teenager Jaime Reyes is the third character to assume the mantle of the Blue Beetle after Dan Garret and Ted Kord.” The character was created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner.

DC has been having a lot of creative success with their seasonal specials. Usually they’re a way for fun one-off stories or quick-hit introductions for new talent. And periodically they use it as a way to seed ideas and themes for upcoming stories. That’s the case in DC's Nuclear Winter Special, where we get some stuff from relative newcomers like Amancay Nahuelpan or Dave Wielgosz (an editor on the Batman books who’s new to writing credits); unsurprisingly great work from Tom Taylor and Mairghread Scott; an Extremely Mark Russell framing sequence by perennial favorite Mark Russell; and a stealth intro to one of 2019’s most anticipated comics - a holiday get together between Superman One Million and Martian Manhunter from penciller Brad Walker and writer Steve Orlando,...

While we anxiously await the final trailer for Justice League, a few notable goodies have dropped in the interim. In fact, earlier today, a new promo and freshly revealed magazine cover helped tide us over as we look forward to the first big screen gathering of DC’s premier superhero team.
But what may be even cooler than the other stuff we just mentioned are the slew of variant covers scheduled to arrive in comic shops all throughout November. Synergizing with the major motion picture, each handsome piece of artwork will adorn the covers of some of the publisher’s top titles, all of which are either team-up books themselves or spotlight a member of the League.
Strategically released via major outlets such as Entertainment Weekly, Nerdist, The Hollywood Reporter, JoinTheLeague.com and by DC Comics themselves, we’d say several – if not all – of the books showcased in the...

Here's our first look DC Comic's upcoming new series Batman and The Signal. It features Batman with Duke Thomas as The Signal, who will help the Dark Knight protect Gotham City. This will be a three-issue miniseries that "follows Duke’s trials and travails in high school and as a vigilante while introducing new enemies to fight.
I have to say that when I first saw the image above without reading what it was about, the first thought to go through my head was, "What did they do to Wolverine's costume?!" The Signals costume design looks like a combination of Batman and Wolverine. It was designed by Cully Hamner, who worked on Warren Ellis' Red and co-created the third Blue Beetle, Jaime Reyes. He also provided the comic art in the series.

New York Comic Con has once again rushed by in a giant, fun, crazy blur, and although I didn’t get to nearly all the things I was hoping to, I did have a rockin’ time and see some really cool things I can share.
The first of these were a few great panels I landed seats for, including, as is my tradition, the Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles panel. If you don’t know I love the current Tmnt, then what are you, new here? But seriously, I love it. And each panel I have gone to brings something new and different.
This panel (with Andrea Romano (voice director), Eric Bauza (Tiger Claw), Kevin Michael Richardson (The Shredder), Greg Cipes (Mikey), Rob Paulsen (Donnie), and Ciro Nieli (Executive Producer)) was particularly fun, because one of the things they did was a live read of episode #420, “The Super Shredder,” which...

The New York Comic Con is upon us once again, and I can’t wait. This year, as usual, I have a massive list of things I want to see, people I want to talk to, and, of course, merchandise I want to take a gander at (not to buy it, of course. Oh no no no! Certainly not, considering I have way too many collectibles already. I’m just going to look. Really. Just…you know, a little bit. No buying here, nosiree…um). There are also a few cool parties floating around…and you know how I love a good party.
Everyone who goes to Nycc has their own unique wish list of what they want to experience while there. But in case you aren’t sure what you want to see first, here are some of the things I’m most looking forward to. Maybe they’ll appeal to you,...

I’ve said before that, despite liking to attend all flavors of fandom and comics conventions, including (clearly) the media guest-focused cons, I really love Baltimore Comic Con because it has stayed so focused on comics and comics creators. I’m happy to report that this has not changed.
I had a great time in Baltimore this year, doing some of the things that make me happiest at comic cons, like walking the exhibit hall and wandering Artist Alley to see what new things old friends are up to, meet folks whose work I know but whom I’ve never chatted with, and flip through the work of creators I haven’t ever encountered before. Amongst the fun things I discovered were this nifty accordion-style comic by Christa Cassano and Dean Haspiel; a gorgeous limited edition coloring book by Charles Vess, whose work I’ve loved for a long time...

According to reports, Warners is fast-tracking a comedic "...buddy cop superhero feature...", based on DC Comics characters, to be directed/executive produced by "Arrow" and "The Flash" producer Greg Berlanti:
DC Comics' superheroes 'Booster Gold' and 'Blue Beetle' will star in a new feature before appearing in a "Justice League" feature.
'Booster Gold' was created for DC Comics by Dan Jurgens, debuting in "Booster Gold" #1 (February 1986) and has been a member of the 'Justice League'.
The character is initially depicted as a glory-seeking showboat from the future, using knowledge of historical events and futuristic technology to stage high-publicity heroics.
Booster develops over the course of his publication history and through personal tragedies to become a true hero weighed down by the reputation he created for himself.
With no superhuman abilities, he is an excellent athlete, gaining 'powers' from artifacts he stole from a museum in the future.

It’s already inspired two films, but now it looks like Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner's Red is heading to the small screen…
Remember Red and Red 2? The Bruce Willis-starring films based on Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner's comic book series Red? Of course you do. Well, now, the same property is being adapted for TV.
NBC is the network behind this idea, and they’ve got Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber - who wrote the 2010 film, and its sequel – at the helm. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian – who produced the films – are involved, too.
There’s no word yet on what the announcement of this TV series means for the rumours of a Red 3 film, but our best guess is that the TV show has taken its place, seeing as so much the behind-the-scenes talent has jumped ship to the telly realm. That’s...

NBC has announced plans to develop "Red," an hourlong TV series based on the film franchise.
The franchise's writers Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber along with producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are re-teaming for the small screen version which Lionsgate TV and Di Bonaventura Pictures Television would produce.
Released in 2010 and 2013, the action comedies are inspired by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner's limited comic book series of the same name which followed a group of REDs (Retired Extremely Dangerous operatives) who return to action after the CIA sends assassins after one of them.
Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker, Helen Mirren and Karl Urban starred in the films with the first one grossing $200 million worldwide.
The TV series version will keep the core concept of the films along with the darkly comedic tone, but set it in a more grounded and believable world.

Every week I am sent a package full of comics and graphic novels I’m not able to read from my pals at DC Comics. No matter what I do, I can’t seem to find the time for everything I’d like to take in on an entertainment level. My plan is to showcase these books once a week in an ongoing column. If there’s anything I need to say about one of the titles, I’ll gladly add my two cents worth in. DC’s been good to me over the years and I want to do my best to promote their many excellent books they publish every month.
Just in case you’re not a big comic book consumer, let me give you some quick facts. All new comic books and graphic novels are published on the Wednesday of every week. Also, Vertigo is an imprint...

Do you long for the more innocent days when Adam West and Burt Ward raced across your television in Technicolor glory battling the charismatic villains of Gotham City? When you think of the Joker, does a Latino actor who refused to shave his mustache come to mind before Heath Ledger or Jack Nicholson? This is the time of year when the ComicMix crew starts to firm up our attendance at various comic conventions in the year ahead. It’s a frustrating process because there are a lot of shows and we can’t go to all the ones we’d like to attend.
It also makes me really angry.
Last year was the first in a long time that I went to a bunch of cons. It was fascinating and fun most of the time, but annoying at others. Twenty years after we started Friends of Lulu, there are still remarkably few women invited to be guests at the shows.
This is odd, because there are a lot of women working in the industry, and (capitalists take note) even more buying comics and tickets to cons. Wouldn’t show organizers like to demonstrate to this market segment that they are welcome and valued?...

An action movie like Red 2, which is based on characters from Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner’s comic book, isn’t exactly burdened with the restrictions of reality. Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) and his collection of Retired Extremely Dangerous operatives can blow up city blocks, surreptitiously hop-scotch across the globe, and ingeniously escape from the most dire of circumstances; and if some of their Houdini breakouts are borderline unbelievable, well… that’s part of the fun.
In Red 2, which arrives on Blu-ray tomorrow, Moses reunites with aging agents (Helen Mirren and John Malkovich) and his best gal (Mary-Louise Parker...

You know what I love about Baltimore Comic Con? It’s all about comics.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I love going to cons that also put a lot of focus on media guests. As you can tell if you’ve read my column, I have a great time attending panels about Battlestar Galactica or Warehouse 13, or interviewing the cast of Psych, the cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (coming soon!), or the voice actors behind Animaniacs or Futurama. But sometimes, it’s nice to go to a comic con that’s still all about the comics – and that’s Baltimore Comic Con.
At Baltimore Comic Con last weekend, I did one of my favorite things to do at a comic con – which is to simply wander Artists Alley for much of the weekend, looking at everyone’s art and comics offerings, saying hi to some brilliant friends, and meeting some new comics folks.

★★☆☆☆ We've certainly been heavily dosed with geriatric action thrillers in recent years, with Arnie taking on The Last Stand, Sylvester Stallone heading up The Expendables and Bruce Willis popping up in anything his agent prescribes. However, none can boast the hospital waiting room worth of talent of Red 2 (2013). Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins join Willis as contract killer OAPs codenamed REDs - Retired, Extremely Dangerous - who first moseyed onto our screens with the sleeper hit original in 2010. Willis reprises his role as former CIA officer Frank Moses, who's now settled into domesticity.
Alongside sweetheart Sarah (Mary Louise Parker), Frank is now more used to doing the weekly shop at Costco (the first of many shameless product placements) than pistol-whipping hired goons. He's lured out of retirement, again, by his unhinged pal Marvin (John Malkovich), when they are falsely tied with Cold-War era nuclear plot by the name of 'Nightshade'.

This afternoon HeyUGuys found a blissful escape from the heat in the form of a cruise down the Thames with the stars of Red 2: Dame Helen Mirren, Mary-Louise Parker and a man called Bruce Willis.
This time around the retirees are spilling bullets on an international stage as they work hard to save the world from a deadly device –Nightshade. Before we embarked there was a short delay, as we waited for Mr. Willis to arrive, which allowed Dame Helen time to speculate on the gender and name of our impending royal arrival. Tiny and chic in a vintage looking floral summer dress, she was as wry and cheeky as one could hope and very graciously took pains to distract us from the late arrival. Mary-Louise was quieter but enjoyed the chatter nevertheless, predicting a girl for the Cambridges. In a straw poll of the room for gender...

Bruce Willis is fast becoming the poster boy for retirement-refusal – his Die Hard franchise is perhaps growing a little flaccid but there is no denying the man’s commitment to kicking ass as he draws closer to the big 6-0. In 2010 he good-naturedly embraced the comedy potential of his position and – together with Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Morgan Freeman – was classified Retired Extremely Dangerous aka Red.
Red – based upon the Warren Ellis/Cully Hamner graphic novel – was an entertaining ride, modelled after classic ‘30s screwball comedies, it delighted in offering opposition to the Oap stereotype and made reasonable use of its exemplary cast. Now the team have reunited for another caper: this time they are on a quest to locate a deadly device that has gone astray. The next-generation gadget, nicknamed ‘Nightshade’, has the potential to shift the balance of world power and is being sought by some of...
