The murder-mystery renaissance really is in full effect right now. The likes of Only Murders In The Building, Poker Face, and Apple TV’s The Afterparty have been making armchair detectives of us all on the telly side of things, but it’s the big screen sleuthing boom that’s had genre fans flocking to the multiplexes with their magnifying glasses and (presumably) deerstalkers most recently. With whodunnits as wildly varied as Park Chan-wook’s sensual Decision To Leave, the superbly silly See How They Run, Rian Johnson_ – which leans hard into the ‘D’ of DC Comics – on offer, it’s not exactly hard to see why, either.
Now, as we prepare to take enough champagne to fill the, erm, canals of Venice with us to see Kenneth Branagh_, we at Empire HQ have put our tan raincoats on and launched an investigation into the very best the genre has to offer.

There are so many motives, characters, actors, and sets, but we finally figured it out…It was Tim Curry, with exhaustion, on the set of Clue. The actor, who played butler Wadsworth in the classic 1985 comedy (still the best board game adaptation ever), recently sat down to discuss his work on Clue.
Speaking with Empire, Tim Curry remembered the chaos involved in shooting Clue, particularly in the final scenes since his character is tasked with explaining to the guests and audience Who killed Mr. Boddy with What and Where – multiple times, as Clue had various endings. “It was a bit scary, because he never draws breath!” he said of his delivery in Clue. “It was exhausting…Actually, when we finished that sequence, I had to go to the company nurse. My blood pressure was through the roof!” Indeed, it remains a sort of masterclass in delivering revelatory monologues.

Tim Curry is a familiar and much-loved face if you’re a child of the eighties or nineties. First breaking out playing Dr. Frank N. Furter in the musical stage show The Rocky Horror Show, when it transitioned to the big screen, Curry was a natural to reprise his role. The resulting film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, was only a mild success, but a crazy cult sprang up around the movie that’s earned it a place in history. As it stands, it’s arguably the biggest cult film of all time, and it holds a record for the longest theatrical run of any movie, with it continually in theatrical release since its 1975 debut. Halloween revivals of the movie are a beloved tradition, and the film would not have it’s staying power were it not for Curry’s showstopping turn.
