Conveying somber inner struggles and the intense threat of zombie-esque creatures known as Freakers in the same score is no easy task, but composer Nathan Whitehead is up to the challenge with his emotional music for Days Gone. With the open-world post-apocalyptic video game out now for the PlayStation 4, we caught up with Whitehead for our latest Q&A feature to discuss the eclectic instruments he used for the Days Gone score, using music to enhance the internal struggles of the game's main character and the external threats in equal measure, and his work on The Purge films (including how his music for The Purge: Anarchy helped him get the composer gig for Days Gone).
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Nathan, and congratulations on your score for Days Gone. How did you get involved as the composer for Days Gone?
Nathan Whitehead: Thanks very much!

This weekend, moviegoers will return for more madness with "The Purge: Anarchy," the sequel to last summer's horror hit "The Purge." The violent and extreme future world of the film, where crime reigns free for 24 hours once a year, is a bit different from other traditional horror films, in that it isn't the supernatural that invokes fear, but humanity's darkest desires. And helping to convey that tone is composer Nathan Whitehead, who has scored both films in the franchise. Starting his career at a sound design company, and working nights and weekends on his own material, Whitehead's persistence eventually paid off, as he contributed music and arrangements to variety of projects including "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," "Pride and Glory," "Your Highness" and more, along with video game work as well. But it's "The Purge" films where Whitehead is really establishing his footprint and musical voice, and you can...

This Friday sees the release of The Purge: Anarchy and Back Lot Music has provided us with a sampling of the film's score by Nathan Whitehead. Back Lot will release the soundtrack tomorrow, July 15th. “Scoring The Purge: Anarchy was thrilling,” Whitehead comments. “Everything is bigger this time; the action, drama and tension all take place on a much larger scale. I worked hard to incorporate this larger scope in the music, and we went much further combining aggressive electronics and textures with a live orchestra. It was such a satisfying challenge, and I hope my score delivers the intense experience that moviegoers are looking forward to having.”

Watching gruesome scenes over and over seems like a symptom for someone battling serious demons, but when you’re the composer on a horror film, this practice is just part of the job. Nathan Whitehead returns to The Purge series with a brand new score full of the tension cues you’d expect, yet he’s also included enough unexpected musical elements to keep your ears guessing throughout The Purge: Anarchy. Unlike the first movie, Anarchy takes audiences out of the confines of a single home to go out into the streets and explore what it really means when laws are lifted and chaos is allowed to reign supreme. I spoke with Whitehead last year about his score for The Purge, and he explained that the hybrid nature of the film as both horror and thriller “really steered the music into these grittier textures and more processed sounds,” whereas with his score for Anarchy he looked to...

Fans of 2013's "The Purge" should ready themselves with round two from "The Purge: Anarchy," to the strains of the same composer from the first scary flick. Nathan Whitehead returned to score the sequel, and HitFix today exclusively reveals the first piece to arrive from the soundtrack: the ominously titled "Don't Do This." Check out the song below. “Scoring ‘The Purge: Anarchy’ was thrilling,” Whitehead said of the new music. “Everything is bigger this time; the action, drama and tension all take place on a much larger scale. I worked hard to incorporate this larger scope in the music, and we went much further combining aggressive electronics and textures with a live orchestra. In 2013, the country responded to the provocative concept that on one night every year, any and all crime is made legal. Audiences turned The Purge into a surprise summer hit as the film debuted at No. 1 with an astonishing $34.1 million weekend at the domestic box office.
After witnessing the response to the film and listening to the conversations that it provoked, James DeMonaco (writer/director of The Purge and writer of The Negotiator, Assault on Precinct 13) quickly returned to the explosive universe that he created with an even more arresting idea for a sequel: placing the audience outside on the streets during the annual Purge.
A speculative thriller that shows us what occurs during The Purge outside of the confines of a suburban neighborhood, The Purge: Anarchy returns us to a dystopic future. Our government, now re-engineered by the New Founders of America (Nfa), has sanctioned its annual 12-hour...

It's always a great day when the number one film at the box office is a horror flick. And last weekend The Purge laid the smack down on its box office competition. If you want more from this film, the original motion picture soundtrack is now available.

"Scoring The Purge was a fascinating and haunting exploration into what we value as a society and how far will we go in the name of greater social good," Whitehead reflects. "Sonically, this was such a fun world to develop as I got to record and process a lot of strange sounds to create our own vocabulary for the score—everything from spring rattles and...

This Friday, a slightly different kind of summer movie hits theaters with Universal's "The Purge." The film finds Ethan Hawke reteaming with James DeMonaco (the writer of the remake of "The Assault Of Precinct 13," director of "Staten Island") for a grimy thriller produced by genre powerhouses Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes. Instead of explosions, spandex and CGI, this film boasts a pretty intriguing premise: in the future, there's no more crime...except on one annual night of no consequences mayhem known as The Purge. Hawke plays the head of a family who batten down the hatches each year to ride out the evening of terror in the streets, but find themselves fighting for their lives when someone from the outside gets in... Helping to set the mood of tension and dread is composer Nathan Whitehead, and today we have an exclusive track from his thirty song score for the film. Whitehead...

We all have those moments whether we are stuck in traffic or at the end of an un-moving line at the airport/post office/Dmv where you just want to lash out at everyone around you. It’s human nature. But would the world really be a better place if we were allowed to give in to those momentary impulses rather than keeping our emotions in check? The Purge is a new kind of horror film that not only indulges in the expected slasher terror as a home is overtaken by a group of sociopathic “purgers” hoping to get some release, but goes one step further and becomes a comment on our society and how allowing this kind of controlled “Darwinism” would come down to those lucky enough to have wealth and protection versus those who do not. The strongest are not necessarily the ones who would survive and at the root of The Purge is this...

If on one night every year, you could commit any crime without facing consequences, what would you do? In The Purge, a speculative thriller that follows one family over the course of a single night, four people will be tested to see how far they will go to protect themselves when the vicious outside world breaks into their home.
In an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity—including murder—becomes legal. The police can’t be called. Hospitals suspend help. It’s one night when the citizenry regulates itself without thought of punishment. On this night plagued by violence and an epidemic of crime, one family wrestles with the decision of who they will become when a stranger comes knocking.
