“No one sets out to make a bad movie,” Gina Prince-Blythewood said directly on a Zoom with IndieWire.
She’s speaking for everyone in Hollywood, but especially for herself, Issa Rae, and Kumail Nanjiani; the three executive producers and mentors on Season 4 of “Project Greenlight,” which Max recently rebooted with fresh new talent. This time, “Greenlight” will focus on a first-time filmmaker Meko Winbush, on a time crunch to make her debut feature, “Gray Matter.”
“I know ultimately I could, but doing the film in 18 days with three weeks prep and a script that still needed work — it’s insane,” Prince-Blythewood said. “The fact that Meko came through it and she’s still mentally stable is testament to her.”
Throughout the series, Winbush deals with familiar filmmaker struggles: creative clashes, moving schedules, and an uncertain script — all with the documentary crew of “Project Greenlight” hot on her heels and her crew’s.

Former DC Films head Walter Hamada has kicked off the new year with the launch of his new production banner, 18hz Productions, and is making key hires.
Nathan Samdahl, the former Paramount executive who was instrumental in making the horror hit Smile, will act as the company’s senior vp, while Nick Romano has been tapped as creative executive.
Hamada transitioned to the world of producing late last year after more than 15 years in the studio trenches of Warner Bros. and New Line, overseeing the making of horror and superhero movies such as It and Aquaman. In November, his fledgling company signed an exclusive, multi-year production deal with Paramount to spearhead the studio’s mainstream horror movies. It has the goal of releasing several low-to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.

After weeks of behind the scenes drama that dominated the discourse, director Olivia Wilde‘s psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling was released into theaters over the weekend, and the 1950s-set movie dominated the box office in the #1 spot. The film, starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, pulled in 19.2 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend.
Internationally, Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling added another 10.8 million to its total, with the film’s worldwide box office total now currently sitting pretty at 30 million.
The reported production budget for Don’t Worry Darling was 35 million, so it’s still got a ways to go before it recoups marketing costs and starts seeing some profits. The general rule of thumb is that a movie has to make 3x its production budget before ultimately becoming profitable, so Warner Bros. no doubt hopes this one eventually reaches 100 million.

Update: Shia Labeouf has denied that he was fired from Don’t Worry, Darling by Olivia Wilde, instead saying that he chose to drop out of the project due to a lack of rehearsal time. He provided Variety with text, video, and email to back up his version of the story, and you can read about those Here. In the email he writes, “firing me never took place, Olivia. And while I fully understand the attractiveness of pushing that story because of the current social landscape, the social currency that brings. It is not the truth.”
More on this to come, but in the meantime Don’t Worry Darling is still set to debut at the Venice Film Festival next week,

In Victory, “you can live the life you deserve” — or so it’s believed in Olivia Wilde’s upcoming feature Don’t Worry Darling.
In the latest preview for the film, released Thursday, Florence Pugh’s Alice and her partner Jack (Harry Styles) appear to be living a happy life in the idyllic community of Victory, an experimental company town housing the men who work for the secretive Victory Project and their families.
However, not everything is as it appears in the utopia. As time goes on, Pugh’s Alice begins to question their purpose for being in Victory, eager to expose the sinister secrets of the community and company led by CEO Frank (Chris Pine), who states that chaos is the “enemy of progress.”

Don’t worry, darling, because “Victory is safe and secure.”
The latest trailer for Olivia Wilde’s psychological suburban thriller “Don’t Worry Darling” reminds us that chaos is the “enemy of progress” in a hauntingly mundane and isolated life corralled by a white picket fence and the promise of everlasting marital bliss.
But as Alice (Florence Pugh) grows wary of her husband Jack (Harry Styles) seemingly distracting her with mind-blowing sex (even director Wilde promised the film will be all about “female pleasure”), the facade of a perfect life starts to crack….
Fellow neighbors played by Gemma Chan, KiKi Layne, Nick Kroll, Sydney Chandler, Kate Berlant, Asif Ali, Douglas Smith, Timothy Simons, and Ari’el Stachel start to detail the exact same meet-cute story of falling for their spouses, and it seems like Victory may just be an illusion after all.
