Jonathan Swift published his popular fantasy-cum-political-satire "Gulliver's Travels" -- a.k.a. "Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships" -- in 1726. Gulliver, in traveling to faraway and bizarre lands, finds several countries and kingdoms whose entire societies are focused on trivial matters, often to the point of ruination. In Lilliput, the citizens are six-inch-tall royals, and the country has split into factions over which side of the egg is more appropriate for cracking. Gulliver also visits the giant country of Brobdingnag, the floating island of Laputa, and several other fantastical places. To this day, Swift's novel is a provocative and pointed read, poking fun at governmental idiocy in general, and foolish obsessives in particular.
Rob Letterman's 2010 film adaptation of "Gulliver's Travels" is ... not provocative. In fact, it's downright dumb. The 2010 film...

Throughout the course of Sam Raimi's "Evil Dead" trilogy, Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) has been through the wringer. As if it wasn't enough to chop off his own arm and attach a chainsaw to it to fight ghastly Deadites, Ash is sucked through a time portal that lands him in the Middle Ages in "Army of Darkness," the delightfully slapstick final installment in the series. Right after Ash flails around the portal with exaggerated despair, the title card flashes Bruce Campbell vs. Army Of Darkness — not Ash Williams, but Bruce Campbell, who embodies the boomstick-wielding anti-hero to such perfection, that his name precedes the actual title of the film. In the event of celebrating the 30th anniversary of Raimi's "Army of Darkness" this week, I want to talk about Campbell's defining performance as a badass, wisecracking a-hole who is thrust into becoming a hero without ever craving the mantle.

Mosfilm’s Sampo, a Russian fantasy from 1959, and Paramount’s White Christmas, a Yuletide bauble released in 1954, were both state of the art products of a big studio system. But each were Cold War entertainments driven by very different agendas: White Christmas was a gung ho military musical prettified by candy canes, VistaVision and Technicolor. Sampo was a movie out of time—a gravely beautiful folktale set in a bone-chilling winter wasteland. In short, America ladled on the optimism while Russia served up existential dread with a little popcorn on the side.
Mosfilm, aka “Russian Hollywood”, was a monolithic entity with the combined creative juice of MGM, Universal, and Paramount under one roof—established in 1920, the studio was a dream factory...

A kids’ version of the 18th-century satire could have been ripe for laughs – but this is subpar knockabout stuff
Size really doesn’t matter in this nonsensical kids’ animation reimagining Gulliver’s Travels. Because according to its version of Swift’s 18th-century satire, although Lemuel Gulliver did once visit a land called Lilliput, the people there were not in fact very small. However, after he left, the Lilliputian king – a right royal nincompoop – decreed that Gulliver was a giant. So when he returns to Lilliput as a man of average stature he is arrested as an imposter. Which makes zero sense and the movie only gets sillier from there.
Wayne Grayson voices Gulliver, a silver-tongued smarmy swashbuckler who sails the seas indulging in a bit of light plundering. One day he gets word from his mates on the island of Lilliput – who he once helped out of a jam – that they...

The Aeta Agta, or Dumagat, are collective terms for several Filipino indigenous peoples who live in various parts of the island of Luzon in the Philippines. They are thought to be among the earliest inhabitants of the Philippines, preceding the Austronesian migrations. Aeta communities were historically nomadic hunter-gatherers, practices that they seem to retain even nowadays. Zig Dulay’s latest work, which is screening at Sine Halaga Film Festival, focuses on an Aeta boy who finds reality clashing with his dreams.

Itan, a 12-year-old boy wants to study and become a lawyer, also in order to read through all the documents the Aeta community had been receiving, and particularly one that forces them to give up ancestral lands up in the mountain to give way for mining. SandalwoodThe movie, starring child actors Ashlesh Raj and Shlagha Saligrama, features over 280 kids and every character is carefully crafted.Aravind ShwethaAs kids, we all enjoyed the Gulliver and Lilliput story from the book Gulliver’s Travels. We were intrigued by the existence of small and cute human beings who could carry out exactly everything we did, but on a smaller scale. The pictorial representation of small roads, bridges and houses made us believe in their existence. The original book, released in 1726, is still a big hit among kids. Almost three centuries later, if you Google Gulliver’s Travels, one of the questions that pops up is: Is Gulliver’s Travels a true story? Such has been the impact of the book. The teeny-tiny human characters are just too cute to ignore. Same is the case with Ravi Basrur’s experimental film Girmit. Raja (Ashlesh Raj) is a happy-go-lucky chap. His...

Ever since Marjaavaan, starring Riteish Deshmukh, Sidharth Malhotra was first announced, fans were eager to find out and see more. The movie, directed by Milap Zaveri, also stars Tara Sutaria and Rakul Preet Singh.
Talking about the film the director says, “It is a massy action film ,angry, powerful and emotional along the lines of those made by Mukul Anand, Subhash Ghai, and Rajkumar Santoshi. Marjaavaan is a love story with lots of action, dialogue baazi and some beautiful tender moments.”
If that was not enough to get fans excited there was even more scoop to come! There is a lot of excitement around this film for the unique casting because Riteish and Sidharth were last seen together in the blockbuster film Ek Villain (2013), and fans cannot wait to see them together again.
In Marjaavaan, Sidharth’s character begins as a romantic hero but then has to seek revenge after a traumatic event.

Damon stars as a man who shrinks down to the height of five inches in Payne’s sci-fi comedy, a winningly inventive tale of masculinity in crisis
Related: George Clooney, Jennifer Lawrence and a shrunken Matt Damon: Oscars race kicks off in Venice
Recent evidence suggests that the Venice film festival likes to open big, with a bang or a splash, a movie to blow the doors off and reveal the cosmos in widescreen. Previous opening nights hurled the delegates from the black expanse of Gravity through the ensemble free-for-all of Birdman to the frozen wilds of Everest. But a tipping point has been reached; a corrective is called for. And sometimes it’s true that the best things come in small packages. Particularly when the package is as cram-packed with nourishment as Downsizing, Alexander Payne’s gorgeous, giddy parable of a modern-day Lilliput.

The nine year run of CBS’s hit comedy How I Met Your Mother came to an end on Monday night and the reactions have been strong and instant. The finale promised to finally tie up the story of the friends in Manhattan and put together the final pieces in the story of how Ted Mosby met the mother of his two children. ‘Last Forever’ undeniably fulfilled the two criteria but did they do it in a satisfying way? The majority say no and there is plenty of evidence to support their claims.
From this point onwards there are severe Spoiler warnings, if you have not seen the series up to its final episode be warned that spoilers follow directly from this paragraph.
The penultimate episode, ‘The End of the Aisle’, had set the everything up perfectly for Ted to take centre stage and complete his own personal journey. It...

"And that, kids, is how I met your mother."
With that line, How I Met Your Mother came to an end on Monday with an hour-long episode that finally wrapped up the story Ted (Josh Radnor) has been telling for nine seasons. While fans have known all along that Ted would meet The Mother (Cristin Milioti) at a train station platform in fictional Farhampton, Long Island, the show's final episode revealed several new twists in the story of the gang: Marshall (Jason Segel), Lily (Alyson Hannigan), Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders).
Below, we recap the finale's best moments in quotes.

How I Met Your Mother’s last episode before the break featured Andrew Ranells as a guest star, some feuding between the friends and Lily and Marshall’s protracted reunion.
How I Met Your Mother Recap
Darren (Rannels) arrives at the Fairhampton Inn and becomes fast friends with Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and Robin (Cobie Smulders) – despite the fact that they can’t figure out his connection to the impending nuptials. After he tells them the rough start to his life and his subsequent rise to becoming a successful doctor, the girls are won over.
Apparently Darren is the lead singer in SuperFreakonomics that’s been trying to get The Mother (Cristin Milioti) booted from the band. Before campaigning to get her out of SuperFreakonomics he was consistently a compulsive liar who manipulates the people around him into fighting with one another. That sob story? Totally fake.

Lily put her most stylish foot forward when she stepped out for dinner with her pal Ciara — and we loved her look so much we tracked down her (faux) furry jacket right here! Shop.
Lily Collins wore a black Topshop jumpsuit with matching heels to her dinner date with Ciara, but no one could keep their eyes off of her white MinkPink jacket! But don’t worry — her jacket is certified faux fur, which is perfect for animal lovers! The 24-year-old actress also added a little bit of color to her ensemble with a red clutch and matching lipstick. Ciara, who will be turning 28 in a few weeks, looked gorgeous as well, wearing a rose patterned long-sleeve mini dress that showed off her toned legs and slim figure. Although we had no idea these two were friends there’s no denying the fact that they’re both on top of their style game!

How I Met Your Mother went right for my compression sock-covered Achilles heel tonight with an episode that had a trifecta of awesome: Swords, scotch, and Princess Bride references.
Full details of the second (erm, sorta third) episode of the final season are as follows…
We picked up at 2 p.m., 52 hours to go before the Stinson-Scherbatsky union. Marshall was still en route to the location, stopping only to pay some dues (which I’ll get to momentarily). Robin and Barney, fearing the flame in their relationship would extinguish after marriage, were on a quest to have one more round...

Skins is about to come to a close and we're feeling rather blue about the whole thing, given that we've loved the show since it first started way back when. But hey, we've still got three special stories to look forward to - and they just happen to feature some of our favourite characters, too.
For example, popping up in Kaya Scodelario's Skins Fire are Lily Loveless and Kathryn Prescott, who inspired a gazillion Tumblrs with their on-screen romance as Naomi and Emily (or, well, Naomily.) We caught up with the duo to reminisce about times gone by, a ProPlus ban, why they cringe about watching the show now, orgasm faces and more...

For those who doubted the chemistry between Robin and Barney, the How I Met Your Mother Season 8 finale presented a pretty strong case for why they are so good together.
Barney may have missed Robin's cry for help when she couldn't find her buried locket, but he more than made up for it on "Something New."
Reserving their memorable table by the window and producing a pair of the first cigars they ever smoked together showed just how into the relationship Barney is. Maybe you could chalk that up to Barney's amazing attention to detail. Scenes like the one where he gave Robin one last kiss as they left the apartment, however, did well to show the two are not just great friends - but very much in love with each other.
And how about the cameo from Ranjit? What a great touch that was.
