Revenge is an art form. And Blue Eye Samurai takes it personally.
Set in 17th-century Edo-period Japan, Blue Eye Samurai follows Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine), a mixed-race master of the sword who lives a life in disguise seeking to deliver revenge. “It’s an Edo-period tale of revenge — Kill Bill meets Yentl,” said co-creator Amber Noizumi.
Wife and husband team Noizumi and Michael Green co-created Blue Eye Samurai. Sharpen your swords to prepare for this stunningly realized new animated series coming to Netflix on Nov. 3.
“We want people to sink into it and be taken by the story and the level of artistry and forget they’re watching animation,” said Green. “We would love this to cross over into every interest — that if you like The Witcher, if you like animation, if you like Game of Thrones, if you like The Crown, if you...

Blue Eye Samurai became one of the most popular shows of 2023. Since its announcement, there has been a rumor going on about how the series would exceed everyone’s expectations. In most cases, over-expectations result in disappointment, but not in Blue Eye Samurai’s case. It became one of the top show streaming series on Netflix, and the fans are eagerly waiting for the second season.
It has been a few months since the series concluded season one. But it again made the headlines after the Annie Awards went on air. The series wreaked havoc at the award show and won multiple awards. While it was an amazing series, few people expected it to win so many awards. Blue Eye Samurai bagged six different awards at the 2024 Annie Awards.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse sling-shotted past the competition to dominate the 51st Annie Awards, which were handed out Sunday night at UCLA’s Royce Hall. The Sony Animation sequel snared Best Feature and six other trophies — the same number that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse scored at the 2019 Annies — setting it up as the front-runner for the Animated Feature Oscar next month.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse went on to take Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards.
Since the Best Animated Feature Oscar category was launched in 2002, 14 of the 21 winners of the Annies’ top feature prize – and seven of the past 11 – went on to claim the golden statuette. Last year followed suit, as Netflix’s Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio triumphed at both trophy shows.
On Sunday, Spider-Man scored wins for Directing, Music, Production Design, Character Design, FX and editing.

Inspired by a recent screening of Netflix’s animated series “Blue Eye Samurai,” “Game of Thrones” creator George R. R. Martin penned a new blog post praising the work of Amber Noizumi and Michael Green. And while he was in a sharing mood, Martin decided to drop news about his own up-and-coming animation aspirations.
“‘Blue Eye Samurai’s’ very much its own thing, and it is magnificent,” Martin wrote. “Even if you don’t normally watch animation, give it a try. It’s terrific. If you like my own stuff, I think you’ll love it.”
The writer then pivoted to his current work. “As it happens, HBO and I have our own animated projects, set in the world of ‘A Song Of Ice & Fire.’ None of them have been greenlit yet, but I think we are getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them.

When Guillermo del Toro accepted the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature ("Pinocchio") in 2022, he proclaimed during his speech, "Animation is cinema. Animation is not a genre. Animation is ready to be taken to the next step, we are all ready for it." Well, 2023 certainly heard him, because this year we were gifted an embarrassment of riches — all using the animated medium to push the limits of storytelling and visual artistry. At the same time, animated projects are constantly under attack by powerful millionaires in positions of power who can't or refuse to see the value in animation and instead still operate under the false assumption that it's nothing more than "kid's stuff." And even still, there was plenty of incredible animation this year specifically targeting young audiences, like the "Craig of the Creek" prequel film "Craig Before the Creek," Apple TV+'s "The Snoopy Show," and of course, the undisputed children's champion,...

Netflix is undergoing cuts and changes to its animation department yet again, but thankfully good work is not going unrewarded. One of the most celebrated Netflix animated shows of the year, "Blue Eye Samurai," is getting a second season. The show is essentially an animated riff on "Lady Snowblood" that was created by Amber Noizumi and Michael Green and directed by Jane Wu.
The adult animated series is a tale of revenge and blood, following a young biracial woman born out of sexual violence in early Edo period Japan who embarks on a journey of vengeance to find out which of the four remaining white men in Japan is her father. As our own Bj Colangelo wrote, "With only eight episodes, 'Blue Eye Samurai' is an easily digestible watch, but with an addictive story that you'll have to fight yourself from binging."

This post contains spoilers for "Blue Eye Samurai" season 1.
In the new adult animated Netflix series "Blue Eye Samurai," Mizu (Maya Erskine), a young half-Japanese warrior, has to navigate a world which doesn't accept her for who she is. Set in the Edo period in Japan where white people were banned from the country, Mizu has blue eyes that betray who she is to people who cannot accept it. To get revenge on those who have wronged her, Mizu disguises herself as a man, and teaches herself to become a master sword wielder.
The series examines power, revenge, and gender expectations, and has character twists and turns you won't see coming ... yet which feel exactly right. "Blue Eye Samurai" comes to us from writers (and married couple) Michael Green and Amber Noizumi. Set in 17th-century Edo-period Japan, the new Netflix series "Blue Eye Samurai" follows Mizu (voiced by "Pen15" star Maya Erskine), a mixed-race master of the sword who lives a life in disguise seeking to deliver revenge. "It's an Edo-period tale of revenge — Kill Bill meets Yentl," co-creator Amber Noizumi told Tudum. During this time period, borders to Japan were closed to other countries, with the exception of illegal trade. Knowing that there were only four white men in Japan at the time of her conception, Mizu decides to track them down and kill them in the hopes of enacting revenge against the man who made her a "creature of shame." Her quest requires her to hide not just her blue eyes but also her gender, because as is narrated in the series' trailer, "Under the law, revenge is a luxury for men. Women must be practical."

Ahead of the Blue Eye Samurai’s debut last Friday, co-creator, executive producer and co-writer Amber Noizumi revealed the deeply personal inspiration for the adult animated tale of revenge set in a 17th century Japan and starring a mixed-race master of the sword.
The concept was conceived 15 years ago, after the birth of Noizumi and co-creator Michael Green’s daughter. She was born with blue eyes, prompting the half-Japanese Noizumi to wonder, “Why am I so excited that my daughter has blue eyes? What’s the big deal about that? And why am I so excited that I have a baby who looks more white?”
It’s the kind of question that many who identify within the biracial, multiracial or mixed-race communities — particularly those with immediate white family or ancestry — find themselves asking at some point. The answer is complex and sometimes painful but can also be revelatory and freeing.

The line between animation and live action is brilliantly blurred in “Blue Eye Samurai,” the 2D/3D hybrid animated action series set during Edo-period Japan. It’s “Mulan” meets “Game of Thrones,” in which Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine) — a mixed-race, lone-wolf warrior — lives in disguise seeking revenge on the four white men who made her a “creature of shame”.
“Blue Eye Samurai” represents a bold, cinematic leap in TV adult animation that’s driven by the period-authentic scope and spectacle. All eight episodes are treated as a different genre, and the graphic violence and sex are enhanced by the stylistic poetry of the animated form (the characters are inspired by Bunraku puppets and the visual style by ukiyo-e woodblock prints). Crucially, though, its exploration of race and gender through the dark lens of anti-hero Mizu is refreshing and relatable.

In the history of Japan, the Edo period, or, as designated by the contemporary shogunate, the Tokugawa period, spanned two and a half centuries and was marked by several contrasting aspects. On one hand, the extremely isolationist approach of the nation allowed it to be completely hidden away from the rest of the world, contributing to a certain oriental enigma and the creation of a police state. On the other hand, the approach allowed the nation to reach the zenith of cultural innovation and maintain peace and prosperity during a period when the rest of the world was being ravaged by the pangs of European colonialism. Both of these aspects are beautifully highlighted in the recently released Netflix original series, Blue Eye Samurai, created by Amber Noizumi and her husband Michael Green, known for his work as a writer on movies like Logan and Blade Runner 2049.

Academy Award nominee Michael Green and co-writer Amber Noizumi have created Netflix’s latest original animated series Blue Eye Samurai. Set during the Edo Period, the height of feudalism in Japan, a mixed-race samurai woman named Mizu traverses the countryside hunting for those responsible for the death of her mother. Along the way, Mizu incurs the ire of dangerous enemies who pursue her as she quickly realizes her vendetta has far greater consequences and implications for the Land of the Rising Sun.
Packed with blood-soaked fights, Blue Eye Samurai doesn’t pull its punches when it comes to on-screen sex and violence as Mizu seeks vengeance. But more than just being a sweeping revenge yarn, filled with memorable enemies and visually stunning set pieces, the animated series is truly a love letter to classical Japan. For its first-ever upfronts presentation, Netflix took a page out of broadcast networks’ traditional playbook and boasted about not just what series it has launching in the coming months, or even through the end of the year, but specifically calling out its fall 2023 slate.
A staple of upfronts week — though not as much lately, first because of the Covid-19 pandemic and now because of the writers strike — has been the unveiling of ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox’s fall lineups. This was done so advertisers knew what they were buying ads against and therefore what demos and audience size it would be most likely to reach by promoting products during those programs.
For Netflix, which doesn’t follow the September-to-May season that broadcast still lives by but now has an ad-supported tier it needs to supply with commercials, to take this approach is potentially a move for the streamer to...
