Toilet : Ek Prem Katha
Starring Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Divyendu Sharma, Sudhir Pande & Anupam Kher
Directed by Shree Narayan Singh
There is a point of no return in the plot when we the audience become so immersed in the protagonist’s crusade for a better tomorrow that we are cheering and stomping our feet in encouragement for that bright sunshine-drenched tomorrow of which Sahir Ladhianvi dreamt in Pyasa and Phir Subah Hogi.
Our protagonist Madhav’s battle is not really reformatory in the way the great heroes of our times meant it to be. In Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Satyakam when the protagonist Dharmendra marries the rape victim he does it with the least amount of self-congratulations. In Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Akshay Kumar’s mission to build a toilet for his wife is compared with Shah Jahan building the Taj Mahal for his wife.

The first time she looked straight into the camera in her debut film Dum Laga Ke Haisha you knew that she was something special. We are talking about Bhumi Pednekar and her performance in that film was real and honest and oh so good. She, of course, won critical acclaim and the audience and fans could not wait to see what she would do next.
That next is another interesting and socially relevant film. Titled Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, the film that also stars Akshay Kumar, is a satirical, quirky, humorous, light-hearted love story set against the backdrop of a very important social issue.

Set to release on August 11th, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha portrays the love story between a simple man Keshav (Akshay Kumar) and the progressive Jaya (Bhumi Pednekar) with only one thing standing in their way…a toilet. The film is a satirical take on a battle against the age old tradition of open defecation in the country. From the panchayat to the sanitation department, from the role of the government to the superstitions of the villagers, from scams to ethics, from first love to a matured romance, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha covers all the facets and facades stifling India’s potential to overcome the open-defecation crisis.
While the worlds ills and issues cannot be solved overnight, it’s ironic that we have the resources and technology to reach the Moon and Mars, yet still allow the issue of open defecation to continue as a nationwide predicament in India.

Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pedneker make for the cutest yet uncomfortable newlyweds ever! A still from their new movie, Toilet-Ek Prem Katha was just released and we can’t stop obsessing over the awkward yet goofy photo! Akshay Kumar took to social media to share the first look from the movie, which is set to release on June 2nd, 2017. Directed by Shree Narayan Singh, the film is touted to be a social satire based on the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan. Akshay Tweeted the first look and wrote alongside, “With the wrap of @ToiletTheFilm treating you guys to a still from the film...Keshav and Jaya's unique love story coming to you on June 2 :)” The photo shows the two in their wedding attire. While Bhumi is wearing a red lehenga, Akshay is seen in a mustard shade suit. The scene looks absolutely out of an old style wedding. Apart from the two,...

You may have heard that there’s a Bollywood version of the Fox hit “24″ coming up. Well, it’s actually already here. The show will star Anil Kapoor (of “Slumdog Millionaire” fame) as the Indian version of Jack Bauer, Jay Singh Rathore. The show, also called “24″, is bucking a lot of established TV rules over at India. But hey, if someone has to do it, why not Jack Bauer? Or, er, the Indian version of Jack Bauer? From the looks of it, this is a very faithful porting of the original show, in which Kapoor actually co-starred in the eighth and final season of. He was apparently so enamored with the show that he wanted to take his turn as the ace CTU agent, this time set in India. Kapoor gave an interview with EW about what to expect if you’re interested, and you can check out what the...

24 may be slated for another run on Fox, but that’s not the only place where it’s being revived.
Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor—who crossed over to Hollywood with a turn in the Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire, followed by a guest-starring role as Middle Eastern President Omar Hassan on season 8 of 24 — is adapting the hit series for Indian audiences.
It’s a move that’s breaking convention in more ways than one. Such an ambitious TV series (which is set to debut overseas on Oct. 4) is nearly unheard of in India where primetime is dominated by soaps and reality shows.

Much bad blood had flown between the Bachchans and the makers of Chittagong when it was alleged that Abhishek Bachchan had ended up doing a film, Ashutosh Gowariker's Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se, based on the same historical figure Surya Sen on which Chittagong is based. But now all of the bitterness has been washed away. And now the Bachchans, Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, will attend a special screening of Chittagong in memory of the director Bedabrata Pain's deceased son, on 5th October which would also see a rare showbiz attendance by the eminent television journalist Dr. Pranoy Roy. Sources say it was Dr. Roy who brought about the rapprochement between the Bachchans and the Chittagong team. Says our source, "First it was Bedo (Bedabrata Pain) who approached Jayaji. Though she is neck-deep in preparations for the Big B's birthday bash, she agreed to come for the show.

And in a grand event yesterday to celebrate Yash Chopra's 80th birthday, the living legend himself announced his retirement from film direction. "I think I've had enough. I have always lived according to what my heart tells me. I won't make any film after Jab Tak Hai Jaan. I want to do other things now. Launch new people. My wife has been complaining, so I will make her happy." The event also saw Yash Chopra talk about one of the most epic casting of all time that he pulled off for Silsila. Films that gained a ‘cult following’ over the years, despite being unnoticed on release
Silsila
Yash Chopra is looked upon as the grandfather of candyfloss romance, an antithesis to the more ‘artistic’ genre of films. One wonders why. Here’s what his early films were about:
Unwed mothers and illegitimate children – Dhool ka Phool (1959)
Partition and the rise of Hindu fundamentalism – Dharmputra (1961)
Taut, song less thriller about a fugitive, a lone woman and a corpse – Ittefaq (1969)
A man who lives with his wife and the ‘other woman’, Hindi Cinema’s first Ménage à trois- Daag (1973)
In 1981, we had another of his equally risqué works, Silsila. Expectedly, sparks flew when the Screen God of the time shared screen space with the reigning diva. Rekha and Amitabh were quite an item on screen and allegedly, off screen too. The grapevine has it that Chopra was inspired to make Silsila on this relationship...

Capturing a character’s inner turmoil is always a challenge, but far more so in a movie than in a book. An author can go into massive detail on the page to tell us exactly how a character feels; a screenwriter and director has to either include voiceover narration or let the actors they’re working with convey a person’s deepest pain with dialogue and facial expressions. In Trishna, a modern-day retelling of Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles, writer and director Michael Winterbottom steers clear of narration, focusing instead on the actress playing the title character, Freida Pinto. While Pinto, and the film surrounding her, is beautiful to look at, much of Trishna’s struggle isn’t brought to life as well as it could be.

The King of Bollywood Akshay Kumar, who scored mega back-to-back hits with his first two releases of 2012 Housefull 2: The Dirty Dozen and Rowdy Rathore, which both reached the magic Rs100 Crore mark, has once again amazed fans and his fellow cast and crew by undertaking a death defying stunt on the set of his new film Khiladi 786.
The adrenaline junkie dazzled the crew working on the action-comedy film Khiladi 786 when he made an impromptu leap from a Bungalow balcony perched 45ft off the ground – without any safety equipment. Although Akshay was provided with a cable and harness for the action scene, he showed his daredevil nature by ditching the safety measures and expertly diving onto the surrounding boxes and mattresses placed below. Risky yet spontaneous Akshay said his experience was ‘Thrilling with lots of fun’.

This is the truth.
The truth love has taught me.
My love, you showed me how the world really is.
(from one of Amit Trivedi’s very fine original songs from Trishna)
Michael Winterbottom’s latest film, Trishna, is an adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles. Winterbottom, of course, is no stranger to Hardy’s stories, having previously adapted both Jude the Obscure (Jude) and The Mayor of Casterbridge (The Claim). Whereas Jude was a fairly faithful retelling of the book, at least as far as the setting was concerned, The Claim played with the setting, moving it to California during the 19th century gold rush. And such is the case with Trishna, too. Winterbottom retains the essential theme, that of a young woman whose life is controlled by social constraints and the vagaries of fate, but he takes the brilliant step of moving it...

Last week saw the release of Disney’s blockbuster John Carter for our small screens, alongside the long-awaited release of Kenneth Lonergan’s Margaret – you can read Jon’s review of the DVD here.
This week’s list is fairly short but sweet, with some of the finest films released in the first quarter of the year.

Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto captivates in Michael Winterbottom's bold reading of Hardy's tragedy
"In this life," Sir Thomas Beecham is said to have advised us, "try everything once, except incest and morris dancing" – an admonition that Michael Winterbottom, Britain's most prolific and versatile director, has followed. Indeed after 9 Songs, his venture into unsimulated sex between consenting actors, he may well be contemplating an excursion into cinematic incest. Winterbottom's movies have ranged from the music scene in Manchester to incarceration in Guantánamo, and at regular intervals he has made versions of Thomas Hardy novels on three continents.
In 1996, quite early in his career, he adapted Jude the Obscure with some fidelity to its plot and its Victorian times with Christopher Eccleston as the doomed Wessex stonemason and Kate Winslet as his deranged second wife. In 2000 he transposed The Mayor of Casterbridge to the Californian gold rush of the 1860s as The Claim,...

It was a fairly comedy-centric offering last week at the multiplexes but this coming week is a wholly more eclectic affair. This weeks’ releases are set in such diverse locals as gritty English council estates, Parisian high society, the sweltering heat of India and, well, Mars. Are any of them worth your hard-earned cash at the cinema’s though? There looks to be something for just about everybody so make your selection wisely. Little update from last week’s offerings too, Wanderlust was pretty enjoyable and worth a watch if you like Apatow comedies. Project X however was truly terrible. I recommend you all avoid it like the plague.

Like in ‘Tess of the d’Urbervilles’, Trishna (Frieda Pinto) meets Jay Singh (Riz Ahmed) at a Rajasthani folk dance party in a hotel where she works. She informs him in fluent English that she works there on special occasions and that she couldn’t go to college because that is expensive. After the event is over, Trishna goes home with her friend followed by Jay and his friends in an auto. It looks like the London returned brats are up for some fun in the small town of Rajasthan. The audience is given a glimpse of Trishna’s family: a traditional mother (Meeta Vashisht), an authoritative father and two younger siblings.
Everyone in the household goes about their work morosely. The film advances almost like a documentary about their lives—slow, insipid and at times too lifelike devoid of any entertainment value. When a classic like ‘Tess of the...

Continuing his mission to do strange and interesting things with Thomas Hardy novels, here's a trailer for Michael Winterbottom's Trishna, which transposes Tess of the d'Urbervilles to modern-day India.Following his reasonably straight adaptation of Jude the Obscure, and The Claim, which turned The Mayor of Casterbridge into a Western, Trishna stars Freida Pinto as the titular primitive creature of the heath (or its Rajasthan equivalent), who gets into relationship difficulties with Riz Ahmed's Jay Singh. Trishna goes to work for him after an accident destroys her father's jeep (it's a horse in the book) but the pair's love is complicated by the clash between Trishna's rural roots and the urbanity and education that Jay represents. That's the official plot summary at least, which doesn't cover Tess' rape and the lengthy aftermath which forms the core of Hardy's novel. There's no trace of that in the trailer either,...

The schedule for the Toronto International Film Festival will be released this Tuesday morning, and I’m trying my best to finish this list before then. There are simply too many films I want to see and choosing between them isn’t easy. Here is the next five most anticipated films from this year’s slate.
16 – Moth Diaries
-
Mary Harron (American Psycho) is ready to rock for her big screen adaptation of Rachel Klein’s The Moth Diaries, at the Toronto International Film Festival next month. The Moth Diaries stars Scott Speedman, Lily Cole, Sarah Gadon and Sarah Bolger (the little lead girl from In America all grown up). It is always great to support Canadian filmmakers, and since she is from Ontario, I have to place her movie on my must see list.
Synopsis: At an exclusive girls’ boarding school, a sixteen-year-old girl records her most intimate thoughts in a diary.
