Foreign Correspondent
Written by Charles Bennett and Joan Harrison
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
USA, 1940
As if his British films weren’t evidence enough of his talent, Alfred Hitchcock made quite the impression when he came to Hollywood in 1940. His first picture in the states, Rebecca, was nominated for Best Picture at the 1941 Academy Awards. So was his second, Foreign Correspondent, also released in 1940. While Rebecca would ultimately win, many – then and now – consider the achievement as belonging more to producer David O. Selznick than to the director. This is not without some justification. Though Rebecca bears more than a few notably Hitchcockian touches, between the two features, Foreign Correspondent looks and feels more appropriately like Hitchcock’s previous and later works. The Criterion Collection, recently very kind to Hitchcock on Blu-ray, now gives this latter feature a suitably well-rounded treatment, with a documentary on the film’s visual effects, an...

Alfred Hitchcock's Foreign Correspondent is exactly the kind of film that benefits from a Criterion Collection release. I don't consider this to be one of Hitch's "best", but at the same time it's got the elements that make his films fascinating, and, most importantly, entertaining. And Criterion always does a great job bringing a focus to some of Hitchcock's less discussed gems. Add to that, Foreign Correspondent carries an additional weight as a result of its place in history as a propaganda film, emphasized most in Joel McCrea's speech at the end of the film amid the bombing of London, warning those back in the U.S. just what exactly Germany was up to. The scene was added after filming had already wrapped, just over a month before the film would actually hit theaters. Following Rebecca, Foreign Correspondent was Hitchcock's second American feature. Both would be nominated for...

“National Treasure” is a term bandied around somewhat carelessly these days, yet few would argue that Phil Daniels – star of Quadrophenia – is just that, as an actor and musician noted for his cheeky yet somewhat charming personality, and ahead of his upcoming feature film Vinyl, we were fortunate enough to have a chat with the man himself.
Daniels plays Johnny Jones, a former punk rocker who still has dreams of making it into the charts – yet given his age and reputation, may have to rely on doing it via the help of four willing teenagers… Daniels discusses his fun at playing such a role, how he feels about his nude scene, his own musical background, and be warned, we shamelessly drop in one of our favourite lyrics from Parklife*

Following on from director Sara Sugarman’s unsatisfying teen flick Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, the filmmaker has returned to her roots somewhat, this time staying closer to home –as she presents Vinyl, not only shot in her hometown of Rhyl, Wales, but also telling the true story of a punk band’s great rock and roll swindle; a band she knows all too well (she dated the bassist, innit).
Based on the real life occurrences surrounding Mike Peters’ band The Alarm, we focus on Weapons of Happiness, a punk four piece who had enjoyed relative success in their prime, yet split up due to the greed and careless irresponsibility of frontman Johnny Jones (Phil Daniels). However when they are reunited for the first time in years at a funeral, Johnny and the other band members (Keith Allen, Perry Benson, Christopher Roy Turner) take a trip down memory lane and,...

Elmore James (January 17, 1918 - May 24, 1963), inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, is one of the most important figures in the development of the blues. By playing electric guitar not as a louder version of an acoustic guitar, but rather as a new instrument that took advantage of the amplifier to create a new sound, he revolutionized the blues and influenced several generations of rockers as well.
Fortunately, there is a single-cd compilation that offers an excellent cross-section of his legacy: The Sky Is Crying: The History of Elmore James (Rhino, 1993). Unfortunately, it's no longer in print and isn't on iTunes, but it was so popular and highly acclaimed that there are plenty of copies still floating around, as a look at Amazon.com quickly reveals -- and they're still cheap, too. The 21-song collection includes items from the Trumpet, Chess, Flair, Atlantic, Chief, Fire, Sphere Sound,...

We’ve been sent the first look poster for new movie Vinyl which stars Phil Daniels, Keith Allen, Jamie Blackley and is directed by Sara Sugarman with a script from both Sugarman and Jim Cooper.
Based on the story of Mike Peters’ true rock and roll hoax of 2004, Vinyl tells how a group of washed-up rockers hoodwinked top record labels, radio DJs, and the entire rock music world by releasing a pop punk single under a fictitious teenage band’s name….…now they just need to teach this rowdy bunch of kids what true punk spirit is all about!
In Sara Sugarman’s Vinyl, much-loved British icons Phil Daniels (Quadrophenia) and Keith Allen (Trainspotting) return to the big screen, supported by a sensational young cast, with charismatic newcomer Jamie Blackley (Snow White and the Huntsman, London Boulevard) delivering a standout performance that’s sure to mark him out as one...

Hitchcock's breathless tale of an American pressman in a Europe on the brink of war was labelled a 'masterpiece of propaganda' by Josef Goebbels
It's always the same when you dilly dally in getting up to the buffet at a social function – most of the luxury dishes are gone. So being late to this party it was no surprise my favourite fare was already devoured: my all-time favourite film The 39 Steps, Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, Strangers on a Train. But perhaps when the high-end items are out of the equation it allows you time to revisit some of the more humble fare, and when the chef is five-star, humble fare nourishes the mind and soul.
Foreign Correspondent is described variously as a lesser Hitchcock work, a shameless exercise in propaganda, a glorified B-movie and one of the greatest spy thrillers ever made. It is all of these and...
