Toonz Media Group and Be That Spark Corp, a joint venture between Blkbx Originals and Zuroam Media, have signed a co-production and co-distribution agreement for upcoming 3D animated series “Little Sparks.”
“Little Sparks” is based on the children’s book series “A Little Spark” by Chris Parsons, recipient of the Mom’s Choice Award Gold Medal for family-friendly media. The books will be adapted into a CGI animated series aimed at the four to eight age group. In addition, a subsequent feature film based on the book series is being planned.
The series traces the journey of Spark, a timid seven-year-old mouse, and his animal companions as they discover the power of imagination and unity in a whimsical fantasy realm inhabited by magical creatures. With themes of friendship, courage, and self-discovery, the series aims to capture the essence of childhood wonder and the transformative potential of each individual to ignite positive change.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced its 2011 prize winners earlier today.
The highly-coveted Audience Award went to Morgan Neville’s “Troubadours,” an engaging doc about the rise of singer-songwriters — most notably Carole King and James Taylor, who feature prominently in the film alongside other headliners of the period — in Los Angeles, generally, and at the Troubadour Club, specifically, in the late 1960s and early 1970s. (The film premiered at last month’s Sundance Film Festival and will air nationally on PBS on March 2 at 8pm Est.)
The other top honors were determined by a jury that included actor Billy Baldwin (“Gossip Girl”), writer/director Paul Brickman (“Risky Business”), director Andy Davis (“The Fugitive”), producer Frank Donner (“Deliver Us from Evil”), actor Christopher Lloyd (“Back to the Future”), and actor Anthony Zerbe (“The Matrix”), among others, and went to the following films…

Elektrofilm Digital Studios is doubling the size of its Burbank facility with a 10,000-square-foot addition, scheduled for completion in July.
The goal for Elektrofilm -- the digital services provider that opened its Burbank facility in 2006 -- is to expand its work capacity and migrate toward data workflows. The company also plans to extend its Burbank staff size from about 50 to 70, looking to hire primarily editors, colorists, graphic artists, engineers and DVD technologists.
The Burbank location serves as the flagship of the Elektrofilm family of companies, which also maintains offices in Berlin, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart in Germany as well as in London. The company is headed by CEO Robert Walston, who previously led the acquisitions and merging of postproduction, sound and related companies under the Four Media Co. umbrella, the entity that eventually became Ascent Media Group.
Elektrofilm Digital Studios president Frank Donner said that Elektrofilm has further plans to expand, by acquisition, in Paris and Los Angeles.

LAS VEGAS -- Elektrofilm Digital Studios president Frank Donner revealed significant expansion plans Tuesday at NAB as part of a company announcement that it selected Sun Microsystems' storage, servers, software and services to build a high-speed, open-standards database for digital content ingesting, archiving and management.
The technology hub is Elektrofilm's Burbank center, which will connect with the company's bases in Germany.
It also will connect future sites. Donner said at press time that Elektrofilm was closing an acquisition in Paris but declined to identify the company. He added that Elektrofilm is looking seriously at expansion into the U.K., Canada and New York as well as growing its Los Angeles-area presence.
The Elektrofilm Digital Media Environment is in Phase 1 of implementation. It is designed to combine lossless storage systems with Web-based management and delivery tools.
"Together (with Sun), we were able to custom-build a datacentric archiving solution ... which will enable Elektrofilm to pioneer a digital supplement for traditional film-archiving services," Donner said.
