For a metaphysical love-conquers-all tale, “Grace and Grit” offers very little substance around such lofty concepts as existence, spirituality and romantic harmony. Written and directed by actor-turned-helmer Sebastian Siegel in an adaptation of famous philosopher Ken Wilber’s much admired book, the film unfortunately anchors itself in an exploitative mode, insincerely using terminal illness as inspirational fodder.
The real-life saga of a doting couple and their demanding, gradually more harrowing experience with cancer, “Grace and Grit” isn’t the viscerally rousing picture that it thinks it is. Through an overstretched running time and repetitive emotional cues that overstay their welcome, this amateurish exercise falls short of even selling the essentials of the immensely accessible melodrama at its heart, the film’s easiest task.
It sadly feels like Siegel left gaping holes when transposing to screen the truth and the lived-in authenticity of Wilber’s book that has reportedly touched so...

Life, death, and concepts of love entwine in the film “Grace and Grit.” Set among a period that prided itself on self-discovery among ubiquitous overindulgence, the project amplifies one attempt at understanding human connections. Based on the book by Ken Wilber, this true story recreates the details that followed Wilber and wife Treya’s heartbreaking journey.

Quiver Distribution has landed North American rights to “Grace and Grit,” starring Mena Suvari and Stuart Townsend. It will release the film in theaters, as well as on digital and on-demand June 4.
The film is based on the 1991 book by philosopher Ken Wilber that tells the true story of his wife Treya’s five-year battle with illness, treatment and death as the couple falls deeper in love.
“Grace and Grit” is written and directed by British-American filmmaker Sebastian Siegel as his debut feature. Siegel produces alongside Eric Brenner and Lucas Jarach. Suvari and Townsend play fated lovers Treya and Ken Wilber, with Mariel Hemingway and Frances Fisher also starring.
“Sebastian depicts Ken Wilber’s life through a passionate lens as he pays respect to the couple’s journey with Mena Suvari and Stuart Townsend bringing heart and soul to this deeply moving story,” said Berry Meyerowitz and Jeff Sackman, co-presidents of Quiver.

Exclusive: Matthew Modine has thrown his hat into the ring as a candidate for president of SAG-AFTRA. Modine, a member of the union’s local and national boards of directors, is running at the top of the Membership First ticket, the self-styled progressive wing of the union that promises more democracy and transparency — which the union’s loyal opposition says is in short supply. He seeks to unseat Gabrielle Carteris, who’s been president of the union since 2016.
“As a current national and local board member of SAG-aftra, it would be my honor to represent all 160,000 members of the union I have proudly been a member of for nearly four decades,” he said in a statement. “It is my privilege to stand up for our legacy in order to safeguard our future. The Funhouse Massacre presents itself as just another indiscriminate indie-horror flick, but as someone who’s been fooled by many similarly crafted duds, I can assure you that this roadside slaughterhouse is a much more enjoyable beast. Writer Ben Begley, who also plays a bumbling deputy, is not only able to craft a horror flick that’s loads of hellish fun, but this colorful massacre remain consistently funny throughout – not an easy task for scary comedies these days. While Begley’s tongue-in-cheek antics become a bit overplayed in a few instances, it fares far better than most jovial copycats of the same ilk, and holds its own against modern gore-chucklers with much bigger budgets. In the vein of a much more over-the-top The Houses October Built, The Funhouse Massacre is one of 2015’s hidden horror gems despite a smaller-format rollout, loaded with guts and bursting with psycho-carnie ferocity.

Tyler Perry’s “The Family That Preys” just received a first official trailer over at Yahoo! Movies, and you can check it out just above. In a nutshell, the film centers on two very different families learning to work together. Kathy Bates, Alfre Woodard, KaDee Strickland, Sebastian Siegel and Tyler Perry star.
There’s not that much to say about the trailer except that it promises the usual Tyler Perry family drama and romance, and that’s fine with me as long as he manages to inject his projects with fresh ideas and engaging story lines. “The Family That Preys” marks the second film Perry releases this year, following his romantic drama “Meet the Browns.” Watch for it in theaters Sept. 12, 2008.
