Bleacher Report, the digital sports brand acquired by Turner Sports in 2012, launched its own streaming service in March 2018.
On Friday, though, the WarnerMedia unit is marking a different kind of milestone as Showtime airs Quiet Storm: The Ron Artest Story. Bleacher Report produced the documentary, which is its first longform project to be licensed to a third party. The deal marks a new effort by B/R to capitalize on its rabid and youthful following across the media landscape. That process involves a decision tree similar to that facing its parent, At&T-owned WarnerMedia, which is building a major streaming service while also mulling the fate of licensed fare like Friends.
Sam Toles, a seasoned digital executive who joined Bleacher Report as COO in March, told Deadline in an interview that the choice to transact with CBS-owned Showtime came down to where the audience could be biggest. The film’s subject,...

One of the executives at the forefront of Vimeo's charge into the world of original content is departing the company. Greg Clayman, who spent two years at Vimeo and helped build up the video platform's Vimeo On Demand service, will move on to pursue new opportunities at the end of the year, according to Variety.
Clayman's official title was General Manager of Audience Networks, but his most notable work at Vimeo concerned the video site's On Demand selling platform, which launched in 2013 as a way for independent filmmakers to profit from their work. Vimeo On Demand quickly picked up steam in the months after its launch, with high-profile directors like Spike Lee and Joss Whedon releasing films on it. It also emerged as a home for web series, films, and live shows created by YouTube stars. More recently, Vimeo began funding projects for its On Demand platform; it announced its...

Nintendo Quest is a new documentary launching today that shows what happens when two fans go on the hunt to track down and purchase all 678 games for the Nes console. If you're a gamer or collector, this may be worth checking out. Come inside to learn more.
This should be an interesting documentary not only for gamers, but retrogaming collectors. While I used to collect a lot of retro stuff, I gave it up a while back. Even so, I still feel a certain passion for it, and this sounds like the type of documentary that's right up my alley.

Until recently, Vimeo has positioned itself as a platform for creators wanting to self-distribute -- basically a niche-oriented version of YouTube. But now, with a couple of high-profile acquisitions, the online video platform is going head-to-head with Netflix and Amazon. Yesterday Vimeo announced it had acquired the exclusive U.S. first window download to own Alex Gibney's "Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief" following its HBO broadcast. The film, which recently premiered at Sundance, is based on the Pulitzer-Prize winning book by of the same name by Lawrence Wright. The film will be available on Vimeo on Demand in September 2015. "After HBO's exclusive holdback, we will be the only place you will be able to purchase 'Going Clear' digitally," Sam Toles, Vice President, Content Acquisitions and Business Development, Vimeo, told Indiewire. The film will also be available on HBO's various subscription services (such as HBO Go), but,...

Filmmaker Alex Gibney has received critical acclaim and Academy recognition for several of the documentaries he has created throughout his 35-year career. Gibney's latest film is a scientology doc called Going Clear, and Vimeo viewers will soon have a chance to see it. Beginning in September 2015, the online video platform will be the first place where viewers can download Going Clear.
Going Clear is a look inside the Church of Scientology, which Gibney explores by talk to eight ex-members. The film debuted at Sundance Film Festival, with the Wall Street Journal describing it as "the hottest ticket" in town. Vimeo viewed the film and acquired exclusive video on-demand distribution rights shortly thereafter. This isn't the first time Vimeo has searched for content at a major film festival. In 2013, for instance, it went to Toronto to find films for its then-new Vimeo On Demand service.

Emerging digital and bespoke theatrical platforms give filmmakers and distributors a fighting chance of success in the new era, attendees at the Afm’s distribution panel heard on Tuesday (November 11).
Moderator Russell Schwartz, president of domestic marketing at Relativity Europa Distribution, and five panellists discussed the opportunities that await those who embrace new paradigms and warned of over-reliance on the old model for those outside the studio system.
“I’m not looking to compete with studio films,” said Abramorama president Richard Abramowitz. “I’m looking for well defined films that can find a core audience.”
Abramowitz spoke of the success of the documentary Awake (pictured), a documentary about the life of the guru Yoganada.
“Very little money is being spent but because it has a defined audiences people are showing up in record numbers and we will ultimately have a theatrical gross of over $1m. It’s at half a million now, it has been...
