Russell T. Davies was the man behind the golden age of Dr. Who with David Tennant. Throughout his tenure, ratings were consistently between 7.5 and 8 million per episode. This put David Tennant up there with the Fifth Doctor Peter Davison (1982-84), but behind the Fourth Doctor Tom Baker (1974-80), who at times attracted over 10 million viewers. Of course, it's worth noting that both of these were before the era of so many alternative channels.
First impressions from the Christmas special, The Church on Ruby Road, suggest that Ncuti Gatwa has the personality that the Doctor has lacked somewhat since Tennant left the role. And the chemistry between him and Millie Gibson, who plays Ruby, also gave us something to look forward to when the new season lands on May 11.

First, apologies if this violates Den of Geek’s house style guidelines, but Lol. Lol at everyone who thought that Russell T Davies would return to Doctor Who as the avenging angel of ‘The Fans’, riding in and heroically retconning out all the plot points they had been complaining about for the last four years.
Davies has announced he has no plans to retcon Chris Chibnall’s controversial, canon-shaking Timeless Child plot twist, which revealed that the Doctor is no child of Gallifrey, but a foundling discovered at the mouth of a dimensional rift from universes unknown. Neither is he going to let that twist simply sit in the Doctor’s backstory, present but unacknowledged, alongside other inconvenient facts like the Moon being an egg, Earth’s forests spontaneously multiplying to help burn off solar flares, and the Doctor being best mates with Winston Churchill.
No, instead Davies has said...

For his first screen project since Doctor Who, Chris Chibnall is adapting Agatha Christie’s The Seven Dials Mystery for Netflix. More here.
Since he left behind the showrunner chair on Doctor Who, Chris Chibnall has done a theatre production, but not committed to another screen project. Well, until now. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Chibnall was steering an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel The Seven Dials Mystery, and a bit more on that has now come to light.
Chris Chibnall has written the script for the production, which is being backed by Netflix. Chris Sweeney is directing, and the plan is to get the show in front of the cameras this summer. The story is set in a stately home, so it’s a fair bet that this is going to shoot in a similar property in the British countryside.

When Russell T Davies goes to bat for something, everybody had better duck because that man does not mess about.
Ever since Rtd returned to the show’s top job, he’s stood shoulder-to-shoulder with his predecessor Chris Chibnall and waved away calls from fans to either ignore or rewrite Chibnall’s biggest change to Doctor Who lore: the Timeless Child revelation. Now, Davies is saying that not only will the new series work with the Timeless Child concept, it’s the backbone of the new story.
Davies is summarised in Entertainment Weekly as saying that much of companion Ruby Sunday’s arc was inspired by the Timeless Child plot point. In series 14, both Ruby and the Doctor will be curious about their origins and their similar histories as foundlings will loom large. “That story’s going to be the spine of the whole show,” Davies told EW.

Netflix is bringing Agatha Christie's work to life. The streaming service has ordered Chris Chibnall's adaptation of The Seven Dials Mystery to series. The classic mystery novel was first published in January 1929.

As you may have seen, Steven Moffat is writing for Doctor Who again (and I bet Tumblr are glad Cloud servers exist now). According to showrunner Russell T. Davies’ Instagram, he contacted both his successors/predecessors in the role and Chris Chibnall turned the offer down in favour of writing a novel, whereas Moffat agreed and, Davies teases, wrote a series 14 episode in which “a perfectly ordinary word [is] turned into something Terrifying and it’s all in outer space and there’s a woman and Oh My God”.
As we saw during lockdown, Davies and Moffat never really stopped having ideas for Doctor Who stories. While it may seem unprecedented to have a former showrunner return to write an episode, it was fairly common during Doctor Who’s original run. If we take the Script Editor role of the original run as comparable to that of the contemporary showrunner (it...

When Russell T Davies reacted with glee to the official announcement that ex-showrunner Steven Moffat has written an episode for the new series of Doctor Who, he did it with a show of solidarity to Moffat’s successor in the role.
After lavishing Moffat and his series 14 episode director Julie-Anne Robinson with praise on Instagram, Davies made a point of writing: “Steven was the second phonecall I made, after getting the old job back. The first was Chris Chibnall, but he sent love and kisses and Ran! Off to write his new novel!”
The message’s subtext seems clear, as it has been in every public statement Davies has made about the Chibnall era. He’ll have no truck with fans unduly criticising the previous showrunner, the post-2005 trio are mates, and they’re all magnificent, thank you very much. Additionally: when it comes out, buy Chris Chibnall’s new novel.

Actor Andrew Buchan makes his screenwriting debut with ITV thriller Passenger, and here’s the trailer.
Andrew Buchan is probably best known for playing grieving father Mark Latimer in Chris Chibnall’s whodunnit Broadchurch. He has also played the title role in drama The Fixer, as well as parts in films like Nowhere Boy, All The Money In The World and The Mercy.
He now makes his screenwriting debut with ITV thriller Passenger.
The synopsis reads as follows:
Riya (Loki star Wunmi Mosaku) arrived in the quiet town of Chadder Vale five years ago and has since been searching for something, anything that will make her feel alive again. Then one night local girl Katie Wells (Rowan Robinson) mysteriously disappears. The town barely has time to register her absence before she reappears the next day, apparently safe and sound. The townsfolk ask few questions and normal life resumes. But for Riya,...

Chris Chibnall reflects on his Doctor Who time, the mixed reaction to his era on the show, and his new play.
In hindsight, the Chris Chibnall-driven era of Doctor Who saw a lifelong fan of the show get the controls to it at a hugely difficult time. The BBC’s budget was being squeezed, then there was a global pandemic, and as Chibnall has talked about since he left the show, there was a fight and a half to get the episodes made that he did bring to fruition.
That doesn’t mean he’s blind to the criticism that some of his stories drew, and in a new interview at the BBC website, he’s briefly reflected on that.
Up front though, the interview – and it’s a really good, long piece – is for his latest project, a play called One Last Push that’s opening at the Salisbury Playhouse this month.

“Ooh, jukebox” – the words uttered by the Fourteenth Doctor when invited to nosey around the Fifteenth Doctor’s new Tardis in the closing moments of 60th anniversary special “The Giggle”.
Ooh, jukebox indeed. Specifically, the Doctor’s jukebox is a 1946-designed Wurlitzer 1015 nicknamed “The Bubbler” on account of the bubbles that move through its colourful tubes as it plays tunes. Even more specifically, we’ve seen the same make and model of jukebox twice before on Doctor Who, once on the set of Clara’s 1950s-Diner Tardis, and once five billion years into the future on Platform One, where the great and the good are gathered to watch the imminent destruction of planet Earth.
Whether or not it’s supposed to be the self-same jukebox from those previous appearances, or simply something shiny that caught the Doctor’s eye, the songs it plays are significant. Production designer Phil Sims explained...

The worst thing that could possibly happen to a Doctor Who fan is for the show to be cancelled again. Or for it to be broadcast again. Depends who you ask, really.
Despite the advent of the 15th Doctor and the anticipation that brings, there are nagging doubts abroad concerning the show’s future. And that’s fair enough, really. Some fans are just naturally pessimistic, some remember previous crushed hopes around Doctor Who’s wilderness years, and some just look at the state of TV streaming and feel that pessimism is a fairly realistic outlook. It’s also not unreasonable to be concerned that David Tennant is kicking around somewhere, especially given that it was raised by the host during Gatwa’s recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show.

Wahey, it’s Christmas. Time to celebrate by ranking television designed to air when everyone is drunk or angry or asleep or all three. This is exactly what Jesus would have wanted.
The Doctor Who Festive Specials have been part of the BBC’s Christmas and New Year’s Day line-up since 2005 – times when there’s something of a captive audience who might not normally watch the show. Unlike the 1965 Christmas Day episode, the hope is that they’ll attract a broader audience. Some episodes are more forgiving for casual viewers than others. Some episodes will garner the ultimate praise from your father-in-law: complete silence for the duration followed by ‘That was rather good’. Some episodes make absolutely no sense to anyone who only watches at Christmas.
Including Chris Chibnall’s three New Year specials (but not ‘Spyfall’ because it’s a series opener rather than a one-off special episode) brings us to 17 stories,...

To any fans who’d wished for Russell T Davies to return as Doctor Who showrunner and correct where they thought the show had drifted off course since his absence, it might be a case of ‘careful what you wish for’. Oh? You wanted Doctor Who to be like it was in the olden days before it got ‘woke’? Let’s resolve Davies’s first episode with a trans woman of colour chanting “Non-binary”. You wanted Doctor Who to retcon all of Chris Chibnall’s changes to the canon? Well, we’re going to make his plot points key emotional touchstones for the new specials and series – and then invent bigeneration.
And now the next step in Davies’ campaign against those who want Doctor Who to be like it was in the old days (whenever they were), is to make pronouncements about the show’s genre.

The Doctor Who Christmas specials were a much celebrated romp until showrunner Chris Chibnall played Grinch and discontinued the festive tradition in 2018, moving these installments to New Year’s Day, by which time there were few traces of the holidays left. Now Russell T. Davies has replaced those lumps of coals with a bonafide stocking stuffer: “The Church on Ruby Road” is a thrilling holiday showcase for new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa and his companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson).
“The Church on Ruby Road” recalls the revival’s first episode, 2005’s “Rose,” where the Doctor’s new companion takes almost a starring role while the Doctor appears as a mysterious figure in a badass leather coat. Past showrunners and actors have tried putting more of the “who” back in Doctor Who, often with mixed results.

Buckle up, Whovians, because Doctor Who’s timey-wimey-ness is about to get even timey-wimey-er.

Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine in issue 598, Davies draws fans’ attention to the in-vision episode commentary that will be available on BBC iPlayer after “The Giggle” airs – featuring him, producer Phil Collinson and David Tennant – and revealed that “controversial events” in this episode would lead to a huge change for Doctor Who:

Spoilers, as we get a clearer idea of Russell T Davies’ approach to two story threads from the Chris Chibnall era of Doctor Who, in particular the Flux.
There’d been a fair bit of speculation over the past few months that the new era of Doctor Who was going to have precious little to do with the one that immediately preceded it. Outside of David Tennant’s 14th Doctor acknowledging the 13th, the opening episode of the new Who – The Star Beast – quickly got on with doing its own thing.
It’s little secret that Chibnall’s era of Doctor Who was pretty divisive. As much as Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor rightly earned a legion of fans, the stories she was part of didn’t always feel fully fuelled.
But there were some strong moments in there, and Chibnall was also keener to explore Time Lord lore than some before him.

The Doctor Who Christmas special, The Church On Ruby Road, is returning to a Christmas Day slot on BBC One.
Even as we await the second of three special 60th anniversary specials of Doctor Who this coming Saturday, there’s one eye on what’s coming on Christmas Day: the arrival of the 15th Doctor’s first full story.
Ncuti Gatwa becomes the Time Lord in the episode, that’s entitled The Church On Ruby Road. And the BBC has released fresh images from the show, as well as a synopsis.
It reads as follows…
Airing on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, the episode sees the Doctor come face-to-face with the mythical and mysterious goblins as his life collides with Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson.
Little is known about Ruby Sunday as she was abandoned on Christmas Eve as a baby. Now living with her mum, Carla and grandmother,...

In all my years covering television, I have only ever once cursed out an interview subject, even in jest.

Doctor Who’s new Tardis interior set will do “amazing things,” promises producer Phil Collinson. Speaking alongside fellow producer Vicki Delow and actor David Tennant on the official inside commentary accompanying “The Star Beast”, Collinson explained that the vast new white interior engineered by production designer Phil Sims isn’t only as big as it looks, but also has some surprises in store.

Tennant describes it as a great honour to have been the Doctor to unveil the new Tardis interior, and have been “the first person to fiddle” with the super-sized new console and multi-layer gantries, as well as the first person to run around...

Remember back in 2008, when Donna Noble broke our hearts? Catherine Tate’s gloriously mouthy companion had gone from a suburban office temp to the most important woman in creation, and then had her memory wiped. She saved the universe, but she lost everything. “There’s never been a human-Time Lord metacrisis before,” David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor told her. “You know why.”
“Because there can’t be”.
And, oh, how we cried.
That was 101 episodes, (give or take) fifteen years (our time), a couple of thousand years (the Doctor’s time), three regenerations (more or less) and two show-runners ago. The second great era of Doctor Who ended in October of last year when Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor regenerated into … What? What? What?! … David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor. The new Doctor once again wore an old Doctor’s face, and behind the scenes another returning figure was writing his dialogue.

It’s Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary month, which calls for two things: celebration, and admin. Fittingly, here’s an administrative celebration of the BBC show, featuring every season/series that’s aired so far. After a six-tab Excel file and a lot of overthinking, it’s a big ol’ list arranging each of Doctor Who’s individual runs in reverse order of excellence.
(A note on methodology: this list does not include runs of Doctor Who specials or the TV movie, and Christmas specials are included under the entries for their relevant series.)
There’s good stuff everywhere in Doctor Who. Sometimes it can take a bit of digging to find it, but much of the time, you hardly even have to look – it’s just there, posing as the Commissioner from Sirius 4, or asking “Do I have the right?”. What follows is an attempt to arrange each season...

Warning: contains minor Spoilers for Doctor Who episode “Wild Blue Yonder”
We’ve been speculating about the 60th anniversary Doctor Who specials for well over a year now, with one detail after another being drip-fed to fans via announcements and trailers, and episode one “The Star Beast” having recently had a starry premiere screening, but with mere weeks to go we still know next to nothing about the second episode, “Wild Blue Yonder”.
This was a deliberate choice by showrunner Russell T Davies. Speaking in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Davies revealed his dream that the second special would air with no previews whatsoever:
“This is the secret one,” Davies explained, “I wanted to take one of the Specials and say ‘Let’s protect this one. Let’s try to reveal nothing about it’”.
While the magazine’s preview feature for “Wild Blue Yonder” keeps the cards firmly close to its chest,...

There truly has never been a better time to be a Doctor Who fan.
Not only do we have the three long-awaited 60th anniversary episodes mere weeks away (even if we are still waiting on an official release date beyond “November!”), we’re then getting the return of the Doctor Who festive special with a brand-new Doctor and companion on the way in Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson, not to mention the shiny new series 14 launching some time in 2024.
But in the mean time, the surprise 60th anniversary celebration announcements keep on coming – and the BBC’s latest Doctor Who news is a biggie:
The Entire Doctor Who Back Catalogue Is Coming To BBC iPlayer!
From 1st November, BBC iPlayer will host over 800 episodes of Doctor Who, including all the classic series from the very first Doctor, William Hartnell, right the way through to the 1996 TV movie with Paul McGann.

The Daleks have appeared in every series of Doctor Who since it returned in 2005, after being in 14 stories in the show’s original run. It’s understandable: without the success of the Daleks in 1963 it’s unlikely Doctor Who would be on TV today. The two are so intertwined that when people think of the Doctor, they can’t help but think of the Daleks. Being so closely connected in such a long-running show though, has its drawbacks: the Daleks always return, but their credibility as a threat has diminished.
Former showrunner Steven Moffat described the Daleks as “the most reliably defeated enemies in the universe”. Moffat (and Mark Gatiss) therefore gave them a victory, and then rested them, relatively speaking, with cameo appearances in series six and ten. Under Moffat’s predecessor Russell T. Davies, the villains reached their logical conclusion of trying to destroy everything in the universe that wasn’t Dalek.

The legacy of Chris Chibnall’s reign as Doctor Who showrunner is a controversial one, and even now it’s unclear how history will judge it. Chibnall brought in a lot of important and necessary steps in the show’s evolution, including the first woman Doctor, the first non-white Doctor, the first non-white writer on the show, and a real attempt to bring back the educational aspect of the series for the first time in decades.

Russell T. Davies is getting his band back together for the BBC and Disney+ Doctor Who series.
Composer Murray Gold has joined the sci-fi drama series and once again work with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales on his musical scores.
These will appear in the three November specials featuring David Tennant as The Fourteenth Doctor and then in the episodes starring Ncuti Gatwa as The Fifteenth Doctor, beginning over Christmas.
Gold joined Davies for the 2005 reboot of Doctor Who, revamping the iconic theme tune and creating music for the Daleks and the Cybermen.
“I’m so happy to be invited back for another joyful ride in the Tardis,” said Gold. “I didn’t think twice. Working with Russell and his team is just a pleasure.”

Doctor Who fans have been given a peak at Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor and Millie Gibson’s Ruby in Sixties attire.
The Sex Education star was revealed to be the next Time Lord back in May, with Coronation Street star Gibson confirmed to play his companion in November.
Ever since the announcement, fans of the show have been desperate for any insights into Gatwa’s time in the Tardis.
The first images of the pair came out in December, and now new snaps have arrived of the characters going back to the Sixties.
The Doctor is shown in a blue pinstripe suit, sporting an Afro and silver rings.
Ruby is wearing a black-and white ensemble, including hoop earrings, belted dress and white knee-high boots.

RuPaul’s Drag Race double-winner Jinkx Monsoon has joined the cast of Doctor Who in a “major role”.
The drag performer, who uses they and she pronouns, first appeared on the fifth season of Drag Race in 2013. Last year, they were named the show’s Champion of Champions after winning the first-ever, all-winners, All Stars season.
On Monday (3 April), it was announced that Jinkx will appear opposite Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor in the forthcoming series of Doctor Who.
Commenting on the news, Jinkx said: “I’m honoured, thrilled, and utterly excited to join Doctor Who! Russell T Davies is a visionary and a brilliant writer – I can’t wait to get into the weeds with him and the crew! I hope there’s room in the Tardis for my luggage.”
Returning showrunner Davies wrote that Jinkx’s involvement had been “six months in the planning”.

Ncuti Gatwa has responded to John Boyega’s comments that he’d “love” to appear in the next series of Doctor Who.
Speaking in a recent interview with the Radio Times, the Star Wars actor said that Gatwa’s appointment as the new Doctor “inspired” him and showed the industry was “opening up” when it comes to diversity.
“You get inspired by things like Ncuti Gatwa playing the Doctor in Doctor Who – that is special to me,” he said. “The glass ceiling can’t limit us. It’s exciting to see what comes out of this new stage of filmmaking and entertainment.”
Asked if he’d want a guest role in Gatwa’s new era of the BBC series, Boyega said: “I would love that! But get me in an episode where I’m one of the many Doctors in many timelines so I can just cameo it. Or I’d be the assistant,...

French TV festival Series Mania started out playfully with a slew of humorous digs directed at its starry guests during the opening ceremony, including Brian Cox, back in town to hold a masterclass and introduce the latest episode of his smash hit “Succession.”
“I didn’t have time to watch Season 3. I have to see my children grow up, Brian!,” exclaimed host Daphné Bürki, before introducing this year’s opening show “Greek Salad” by Cédric Klapisch: “A prequel to ‘Norwegian Omelette,’ always starring Romain Duris,” Bürki joked.
Series Mania general director Laurence Herszberg joined in on the fun, giving a shoutout to “Emily in Paris’s” Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, attending with co-star Arnaud Binard: “She became a symbol of a Parisian woman. I hope there isn’t too much weight on your shoulders, Philippine!”

Based in the northern French town of Lille since 2018, Series Mania has emerged as a key showcase for premium series and a spotlight for international creators — though, given the wider forces shaping the TV business, that spotlight has often shone on talent from the same three or four territories. And so, when programming the latest edition, the Series Mania brass looked to widen the field.
“This year, we will introduce our attendees to new narrative modes and visual possibilities,” says general director Laurence Herszberg. “Because we’ve discovered so many series from countries that haven’t often attended the major festivals, with creative outputs that are much lesser-known. We want to celebrate them as well.”
Running March 17–24, this edition boasts 55 series culled from 396 submissions encompassing more than 60 countries, with titles from Uruguay (“The Universe Conspires”), Benin (“Black Santiago Club”) and an Indo-Pakistani production (“Limboland”) all appearing at Series Mania for the very first time.

When Laurence Herszberg first launched Series Mania back in 2010 in Paris, the former Forum des Images director was keen to apply her deep knowledge of film and the film festival model to the television sector. At the time, says the French exec, no one was doing any kind of TV festival “solely dedicated to series.”
“No one was really talking about TV series,” the festival general director tells Deadline. “So, I decided to do something for the public just to try and see and imagine how it would work in the television sector.”
Little did she know how much the industry would shift, with much of the balance (and money) now lying in the scripted television sphere rather than the independent film space. As a result, across the last 13 years Herszberg and her team have been able to nurture and grow Series Mania into one of the most attractive events in the global TV calendar.

It's a great (and somewhat confusing) time to be a Whovian. Although Ncuti Gatwa has been announced as the next Doctor, and Millie Gibson's been announced as the next companion, these are not the main characters we'll be following as we head into the 60th Anniversary Specials. Instead, those three special episodes will be focused on the return of the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant), who is now technically the Fourteenth Doctor too. There's also the return of Donna Noble to look out for, as well as the return of the old showrunner Russell T. Davies, who ran the revival show from seasons 1 through 4.
The one thing we know for sure is that, when those specials are over, we will get a regular season with Gatwa and Gibson. With Davies sticking around as showrunner, you'd think it'd be safe to say that most of the returning characters would be from those early seasons.

In Series 13 we bade farewell to Jodie Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall, and before the series finished airing the BBC announced Russell T Davies was returning as showrunner and the new Doctor would be Ncuti Gatwa.
And then the explosive Series 13 finale ‘The Power of the Doctor’ threw a big old sonic spanner in the works. When Whittaker regenerated, instead of getting a sneak peek at Gatwa as the new Doctor (as we have with all other modern Doctor Who regenerations), we got the surprise twist of David Tennant returning.
We now know that Tennant will be the official Fourteenth Doctor for the three 60th anniversary episodes, with Gatwa apparently playing Fifteen, the only hint of him so far...

According to the BBC, The Doctor has a brand new companion. 18-year-old actor Millie Gibson, best known for her turn on the soap opera "Coronation Street," will be appearing alongside Ncuti Gatwa when the latter makes his debut as the Fifteenth Doctor on "Doctor Who" in 2023. Like many companions past, this will be Gibson's biggest breakout role to date, but her other credits include the children's show "Jamie Johnson" and "Butterfly," a drama about a girl coming to terms with her gender identity.
Gibson will play the cheerfully named Ruby Sunday in "Doctor Who" when the series returns from hiatus. While little is known about Ruby as of yet, "Sex Education" star Gatwa has described Gibson herself in a way that makes it clear that she'll be a great match for his Doctor. Yes, Grey’s Anatomy is still running. And no, you haven’t missed anything. On the 8th of December, ITV Hub is being replaced by ITV’s brand-new streaming service, Itvx. Yes, this might seem like the latest in a long line of rebrands that don’t appear to change anything concrete but Itvx will host new and exclusive programmes.

Like ITV Hub currently, you’ll also be able to watch the ITV channels live on Itvx – although let’s hope the new service has ironed out the live-streaming problems that frustrated so many football fans during last year’s Euros.

Warning: contains spoilers for ‘The Power of the Doctor’.
Few Doctor Who fans will forget Jodie Whittaker’s final moments on the show, before she shockingly regenerated into David Tennant, but when ‘The Power of the Doctor’ script was added to the BBC Writersroom script library, some were surprised to see her final words were different to the regeneration scene broadcast.
In the episode, we saw Jodie regenerate after saying ‘Right then, Doctor-whoever-i’m-about-to-be: tag, you’re it!’ but the original script has this line coming before she says ‘Ah, that’s the only sad thing. I want to know what happens next. I bet it’s going to be brilliant.’
Fans will recognise this as a nod to Whittaker’s first words as the Doctor: ‘Oh, brilliant!’ which is all we heard her say before she was dramatically thrown from the Tardis to fall towards Earth at the end...

As first revealed back in May 2022, former "Doctor Who" star David Tennant is returning to the seminal sci-fi series alongside his former companion Catherine Tate as Donna Noble as part of the show's 60th anniversary. Whovians got their first glimpse of the returning Doctor in the recent special that marked the end of Jodie Whitaker's time in the Tardis. However, Tennant's appearance in "The Power of the Doctor" wasn't exactly under the circumstances that Whovians expected to see the Tenth Doctor again. Well, I guess it's actually the Fourteenth Doctor now!
In the episode, due to reasoning that doesn't exactly make sense, the Thirteenth Doctor is forced to regenerate into the Master. During this time, when Sacha Dhawan's mad Time Lord is in control of The Doctor's body, she meets a mysterious figure in what is essentially the Ancestral Plane. Dubbed the Guardians of the Edge of Existence, this...

Ncuti Gatwa is one of the entertainment industry's quickest-rising stars. After three seasons of his trailblazing role as Eric Effiong in Netflix's fresh take on the teen sex comedy, "Sex Education," and landing a supporting role in Greta Gerwig's upcoming "Barbie" movie, Gatwa was officially announced by the BBC as the next Doctor in their historic sci-fi series, "Doctor Who," alongside Russell T Davies who is returning once again as showrunner since he revived the show for a new era back in 2005.
This past week, Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker and Showrunner Chris Chibnall passed down the torch in "The Power of the Doctor," the big finale to Thirteen's messy but historic era of the show. At the end of the special episode, Thirteen finally regenerated — but instead of regenerating into Ncuti Gatwa's version of the Doctor like everyone expected, fans were shocked to see the Thirteen regenerate back into the Tenth Doctor,...

I thought my days complaining about queerbaiting in beloved genre shows died when Tumblr removed Nsfw content, but the completion of the "Doctor Who" centenary special has me coming out of retirement to criticize the blatant queerbaiting injected into the relationship between The Doctor and her companion Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill). As the first female Doctor in the show's decades-long history, Jodie Whittaker's run with writing by Chris Chibnall has been ... complicated, to put it kindly.
In her review of "The Power of the Doctor," our resident Whovian expert Hoai-Tran Bui described the Chibnall/Whittaker era as being "mired in clunky writing, nonsensical plots, half-realized characters, and empty spectacle" all while "missing the heart that made those kinds of quirks bearable." Whittaker and her historic first female Doctor deserved better, as did the queer fans who were seemingly promised genuine representation for the very first time, only to have...

Warning: contains spoilers for Series 11, 12, Doctor Who: Flux and the 2022 Specials.
The mere mention of ex-showrunner Chris Chibnall is enough to trigger rage in some Doctor Who fans, and for a variety of reasons. There are the souls who cling to a past that is widely commercially available, and rant about ‘wokeness’. Whatever they need to help them, it almost certainly won’t be found here. Then there are those who find issue with Chibnall’s writing of the show beyond its entertainment value. And finally, there are the people who enjoy this version of Doctor Who and are furious at the level of abuse hurled at it. Given that we’ve already discussed the shortcomings of the Chibnall era here and here, let’s now look at what has worked over the past three series of Doctor Who.
Series 11 injected some freshness by moving out of London and avoiding returning monsters.

"Doctor Who" is always taking itself in bold, unexpected directions, but the ending to their latest episode might be their most ambitious one yet. "The Power of the Doctor" was Jodie Whittaker's final episode, but she did not regenerate into Ncuti Gatwa's expected Fourteenth Doctor. Instead she regenerated into ... David Tennant again. That's right, the Tenth Doctor is now also going to be the Fourteeth, at least for a little bit in 2023 before Gatwa takes over for good.
It's an interesting choice for showrunner Chris Chibnall to leave his era off on, and an exciting one for former showrunner Russell T. Davies (who was in charge throughout Tennant's run) as he returns to run the show yet again. It's going to be a year before this cliffhanger is resolved in the three 60th Anniversary special episodes, which is also expected to include the return of Donna Noble (Catherine Tate...
