Paying great homage to the past was the drive of 20th Century Fox’s Ford v. Ferrari and Blue Sky Animation’s Will Smith voiced feature Spies in Disguise.
In shooting James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari Oscar nominated Dp Phedon Papamichael at Deadline’s NY Contenders today said that the filmmaker was inspired by classic old school race car movies like John Frankenheimer’s Grand Prix and the Steve McQueen 1971 pic Le Mans.
Ford v. Ferrari tells the story of car designer Carroll Shelby and his iconoclast British race car driver Ken Miles as they battle corporate interference, their own personal demons, and the laws of physics to build the ideal race car for Ford as the automaker challenges Ferrari in the 24 hour Le Mans 1966 race in France.
“We had anamorphic lenses customized to cover a larger format,” said the Dp. The whole gist of the pic was to re-create the driver’s Pov.

Annecy, France — Connecticut-based Blue Sky Studios were in Annecy this week to introduce the world to their new feature film, the Will Smith and Tom Holland-led animated feature “Spies in Disguise.” The presentation was led by director Troy Quane and production designer Michael Knapp.
The 3D animated feature will follow super spy Lance Sterling (Smith) and scientist Walter Beckett (Holland), two characters that couldn’t be more different. While Lance is smooth, suave and debonair, Walter is… not. But, when the two work together, they become two halves of a better whole.
What Walter lacks in social graces, he more than makes up for in intellect and creativity. He provides Lance with amazing gadgets he uses on his many globetrotting missions. And while Lance handles the espionage with class and grace, he is not much of a people person. There are also some very important pigeons.

Nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced and "Frozen" and "Monsters University" led the pack with 10 nominations each. "Despicable Me 2" and "The Croods" followed closely with 9 noms each.
I am rooting for "Frozen" to win! It's a return to form to what Disney does best -- affecting fairy tale with memorable musical numbers. "Monsters University," on the other hand, was bland. The film bored me on second viewing.
Steven Spielberg will receive the Winsor McCay Award for career achievement at the awards ceremony happening on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Patrick Warburton will serve as host.

Epic’s world, which unites the familiar and the fantastic, is a forest unlike any we’ve seen before: tiny seeds look like boulders; rocks are the size of spiky mountains; flowers are gigantic and complex; and a butterfly is nothing short of a flying tapestry. In this world, director Chris Wedge interweaves spectacular battle scenes with intimate and emotional character interactions, and seasons the tale with humor, fun and romance. While the film’s visual wonders breaks new ground in animated spectacle, realism, action and adventure, it is Epic’s characters and the actors who portray them that take center stage.
