Fifteen years after co-producing and directing the British Victorian-era war classic Zulu, Cy Endfield brought an epic prequel to the story to the screen with Zulu Dawn. Unlike the original film, however, this 1979 release suffered from a bungled and scatter shot North American release that ensured that very few Yanks or Canadians ever had the opportunity to see the film in theaters. Botched release notwithstanding, the movie is in many ways as good as its predecessor, even if the screenplay falls short on presenting the main characters in a fully developed way. The story pertains to the greatest British military defeat of its era as the Victorian penchant for colonialism extended into South Africa. Initially the indigenous Zulu tribes had a cordial relationship with the British, but a foolish change in political strategy saw increasing incursions onto Zulu territory. The Zulu king went to great lengths to...

When I first got into collecting movies part of my obsession was all of those great extra features that would give me a behind the scenes look into a film and its creation. It never really crossed my mind that someone had to put those together. Someone does. A lot of people do. In fact, it is a nice little cottage industry. There are several companies dedicated solely to creating extra features for DVD and Blu-ray releases. One of these companies started out as Blue Underground in the UK many years ago with Carl Daft and David Gregory. Daft and Gregory were middle school friends with a passion for films. While they were working on Jim Van Bebber's The Manson Family in Los Angeles, they hooked up with John Cregan and started working together as Severin Films in 2006. In 2009, Evan Husney came on the scene, allegedly as the result...

Having just seen Birdemic: Shock and Terror, we can honestly say that it's like nothing you've ever experienced. Words completely failed me by the film's end, and I was sure of only one thing - I had just had the funniest, most awesomely bad experience of my entire life!
Thanks to constant championing by sites like Bloody Disgusting (much like we did with Paranormal Activity), the little flick is developing quite a name for itself both here and abroad. In fact click here for a video examination of the phenomenon from the UK.
The good news? More theatres have picked up this flick for a limited run so you, too, can experience the insanity!

Movie written, directed and financed by independent film-maker James Nguyen packs out screenings
Most aspiring Hollywood directors have a clear-cut dream: packed premieres, adoring crowds, and the sort of feverish internet buzz among film nerds that a marketing budget simply cannot buy.
James Nguyen has achieved all that. But not quite in the way he expected. His horror film, Birdemic: Shock and Terror, is now being hailed as the worst film ever made. Indeed its sheer awfulness is at the core of its rapidly growing success.
The movie, which Nguyen wrote, directed and financed, describes a bloody surprise attack by lethal flocks of eagles and vultures. If the plot appears to owe more than just a little to Alfred Hitchcock's cinematic masterpiece, The Birds, then the directing and special effects do not.

After many years of false starts (and announcements), Richard Stanley’s sci-fi/horror cult classic Hardware is finally set to make its U.S. DVD debut, and will appear on Blu-ray as well. Fango got the scoop that Severin Films will release the film on extras-packed discs this fall.
Hardware stars Stacey Travis as a woman living in a postapocalyptic future who is given some robot scraps by scavenger Dylan McDermott; the pieces soon reconfigure themselves into a murderous robot, with plenty of bloodshed ensuing. Trimmed to avoid an X rating by original distributor Miramax for its 1990 release, the movie will be presented in uncut, uncensored form, transferred from Stanley’s personal print. Extras will include:
• Audio commentary
• Deleted scenes
• Behind-the-scenes footage
• Stanley’s never-before-seen hour-long Super 8 version
And possibly more; retail price info and cover art are coming soon. “They say, ‘Once in every generation a plague shall fall upon you,...

This lost classic of Dwarfsploitation is making its way home onto DVD courtesy of the lovable loonies at Severin Films on March 30th (pre-order below) with a rare screening at the Alamo Draft House to follow on April 3rd.
For those of you unacquainted with this masterpiece of sleaze, allow me to provide with some tidbits from the press release:

Fango heard from filmmaker/DVD producer David Gregory, who gave us the scoop on a new disc he’s working on for Severin Films. “We’ve picked up the rights to EXPOSÉ, a.k.a. House On Straw Hill, with Udo Kier and Linda Hayden,” he tells us.
The 1976 chiller, written and directed by James Kenelm Clarke, stars Fango fave Kier as a writer who retreats to a remote house in the British countryside to work on his new novel, accompanied by a secretary (Hayden) who turns out to have a dark side. “We will most likely release the DVD under the U.S. House title,” Gregory says, “though it’s better known to me and my UK-based Severin partner Carl Daft as EXPOSÉ, the title under which it was banned in England. We have a soft, nostalgic spot for any film that was tagged as a ‘Video Nasty’ in...

Now, I'm straight, but I have a huge man-crush on David Gregory.
And really, if you're a fan of subversive cinema, what's not to love?
For those of you that don't know, Gregory is the UK born horror hero behind such counterculture cult film DVD imprints as Blue Underground and Severin Films and many of the supplemental documentaries that pad out their unique releases. Dedicated, ambitious and massively prolific, this incredible force of frightful celluloid nature recently wrapped his debut feature length shocker, the shot in 16mm Plague Town and has just re-issued, among a slew of other bizarre titles, two of Jess Franco's weirdest and wildest (I'm a devout defender of Franco, more on that in further Blood Spattered Blog entries) – the slasher Bloody Moon and the certifiably insane Devil Hunter - on his cooler than thou Severin label.
Since I so admire those that practice what they preach,...
