French brothers Jules and Gedeon Naudet are known for their documentary about New York firefighters that became “9/11” – an on-the-ground account of the Sept. 11 terror attacks in the city. Over two decades later, the brothers have made another docu about an attack on America’s democracy titled “January 6th.” Told from the perspective of the Capitol and Metropolitan police officers, journalists, senators and congressmen, the doc is meant to be an apolitical account of the attack on the U.S. Capitol in 2021. Then House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Metropolitan Police Commander Robert Glover, and former congresswoman Liz Cheney, are among the 50 survivors who participated in the two-and-a-half-hour Discovery+ film.
The Naudet brothers spoke to Variety about their decision not to interview Capitol insurrectionists, making a film without political bias, and why they specifically wanted to partner with Discovery+.

Broadly speaking, the new Discovery+ documentary “January 6th” is well-timed, premiering just prior to the anniversary of the 2021 riots at the Capitol over the certification of Joe Biden’s election win — and as a new Congress is about to begin a lawmaking session. But upon closer inspection, “January 6th” falls into a more nebulous zone: It arrives a vaguely awkward two years after the incident, which makes it less immediate than the heavily covered first anniversary, while also significantly short of a major milestone.
It’s probably unfair to fault the 150-minute film for marking a two-year anniversary. But the timeline also makes it difficult to figure out the ideal audience for this project. For anyone who saw the frightening violence unfold on the news that day, this material, which intentionally stays within the pivotal 24 hours of 1/6/21, amounts to a comprehensive but familiar review. For anyone somehow oblivious to these events,...

The clock tracking the timeline of the events depicted in the new Netflix documentary series “November 13: Attack on Paris” takes up nearly the entire screen. The coordinated terrorist shootings and explosions of that night in November 2015 happened in a timeframe shorter than any thorough examination of the number of victims, both killed and still living, could handle in real time. Instead, directors Gédéon and Jules Naudet anchor their account of what transpired in the testimony of those who lived through it.
Though not depending on footage from the shooting at the Bataclan theater and attacks on four restaurants as much as in their noteworthy feature documentary “9/11,” the Naudets do orient the viewer to understand which of these events were happening concurrently, particularly how law enforcement and government officials responded to the events as they were unfolding. Rather than show the aftermath of the destruction, “November 13” affords the men and...

On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, firefighter James Hanlon shot footage alongside two French filmmakers for what was supposed to be a documentary about a probationary firefighter. Their camera panned to capture something in the sky that seemed impossible. What they saw from the Duane Street firehouse was American Airlines Flight 11 hitting Tower One of the World Trade Center. Their footage aired on CNN that night, quickly gaining comparisons to the Zapruder film. This weekend, to mark the 15th anniversary of that hellish day, the footage will return to CNN. Hanlon and the the brothers, Gédéon and Jules Naudet, used the...

The two hour special will air for one hour that night and one hour the next night, at 9 Pm Et/Pt. Gedeon and Jules Naudet, you’ll recall, are the young documentary filmmakers who happened to be at the right/wrong place at just the right/wrong time when Jules accompanied members of the Engine 7, Ladder 1 firehouse in Lower Manhattan to the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001 and shot footage of American Airlines Flight 11 hitting the north tower of the center and the complex’s collapse. (He and Gedeon were working on a docu about the firehouse at the time.) That footage became the 2002 documentary 9/11 which was aired to acclaim by CBS.This time, working with NBCUniversal’s Peacock Productions,...
