“I’m used to being one of one when I walk in the room, unfortunately, but in a room like today, I feel so much love because there’s so many of us,” Canadian pop star Lu Kala (@igobylu), one of this year’s honorees, said during a panel moderated by TikTok’s #BlackTikTok community manager Alexzi Girma.
Girma co-hosted the brunch with TikTok’s global head of diversity and inclusion communications, Shavone Charles, who encouraged guests to stop by their first-ever experiential #ShopBlack installation, which included brands such as Topicals, Pat McGrath Labs, Ami Colé and Forvr Mood,...

Nothing could rain on Spotify’s Best New Artist party’s parade. Even if the rain came pouring at random moments throughout the night, it was clear that Spotify’s annual celebration was the place to be Thursday. Turn your head to the left to see Reneé Rapp and Towa Bird giggling and sipping a drink. Turn to the right to spot Kesha posing for photos in front of a giant poster of Jelly Roll.

During February, TikTok is supporting its Black community through initiatives that spotlight some of its in-app features. Its Black History Month plans include a #ShopBlack initiative on TikTok Shop and an Out of Phone campaign that will bring creators of color to movie screens across the United States.
TikTok is getting an early start on its Black History Month festivities. On January 30, the app launched a fresh slate of initiatives on its #BlackTikTok hub, where it highlights some of the Black creators who drive its culture.
This year, the #BlackTikTok campaign will extend beyond its titular app and into the real world. As it did last year, TikTok has put out a list of Visionary Voices. The honor roll includes Black creators like Aliyah’s Interlude and Lu Kala, who have contributed their artistry and creativity to sitewide trends. To celebrate its latest crop of Visionary Voices, TikTok will host...

TikTok‘s first concert, rocked out by artists like Cardi B, Peso Pluma, Charlie Puth, Niall Horan, and Anitta, was the platform’s biggest livestreamed event to date, it says.
9.6 million people tuned in to catch In the Mix live from Arizona’s Sloan Park Dec. 10. TikTok also did three subsequent rebroadcasts of the concert–which was sponsored by Paramount and Coca-Cola–and viewership for those combined + the 9.6 million came out to a total of over 33.5 million for the entire event.
TikTok’s made a few moves over the last couple of years to grow its livestreaming sector, sometimes with…interesting results, but no broadcast has reached this magnitude.
In addition to established stars, In the Mix featured creators from Elevate, the program where TikTok identifies and incubates up-and-coming talent posting their original songs on its platform. Elevaters who took the stage included Isabel Larosa, Kaliii, Lu Kala, and Sam Barber.

TikTok‘s new deal with Warner Media Group is aimed at finding the internet’s next breakout musicians.
The multiyear deal is a “wide-ranging, first-of-its-kind” agreement, TikTok and Wmg say, that covers licensing of Wmg music for use on TikTok, use of TikTok’s promotional capabilities for artists signed to Wmg, and an emerging artists program called Elevate.
“Through Elevate, TikTok will identify the next wave of emerging stars poised to break out in the music industry, providing them with meaningful support both in-app and out in the world to build careers beyond a single trending hit,” TikTok said in a company blog post.
The program’s inaugural class includes six artists who’ve grown their audiences on TikTok: Chinchilla (400K followers), Sam Barber (800K), Omar Courtz (90K), Isabel La Rosa (300K), Kali (1M), and Lu Kala (280K).

Lu Kala is in her pretty girl era. "I've been standing firm on what I believe in," the Congolese Canadian singer explains to Popsugar, defining this moment in her life. That mentality - "being myself to the fullest level and loving myself at any part of where I'm at" - that's what Kala is singing about in her December 2022 track "Pretty Girl Era," a bubbly pop beat that had a quiet debut but has since built steam thanks to TikTok (more on that in a bit). While Kala sings about it being her "hottie time of the year," embracing herself in the now is "more than a physical thing" - though, she notes, "I feel very pretty, I've been looking really great." (Her signature orange hair and embrace of colorful clothing prove it.)
"It's more about that feeling when . . . you feel like everything is connecting for you," she explains.

If you've opened up TikTok within the last month, chances are you've heard Latto's infectious new bop "Put It on Da Floor." The "Big Energy" rapper is responsible for the latest sound bite taking over the platform, with its catchy "rip me out the plastic / I've been acting brand new" lyrics serving as the soundtrack for reveals of everything from glamorous prom outfits and nail sets to sleek hairdos. People are literally ripping themselves out of plastic - it's a sight to behold.
Following the release of Latto's single on April 21, it's been nearly impossible to escape the song's opening line on social media. And the rapper has been steadily promoting it on her own pages with hilarious videos of her friends rapping along to the lyrics, too. But Latto and TikTok users aren't the only ones getting in on the fun - Cardi B is hopping on the...

Congolese-Canadian musician Lu Kala has collaborated with Spotify to co-curate its Equal Canada playlist in honour of International Women’s Day.
By including “a diverse range of inspiring stories of movements around the world, through music and at full volume,” Spotify stated in a news release that the playlist intends to spotlight Canadian women in music.
“Music offers me the ability to be heard but not always seen,” Kala explained in the press release. “I believe that women need support on all fronts. Feeling invisible is a very real thing. You never quite know what that looks like unless you’re in it. Over the years, there has been far more inclusion in spaces that were once male dominated but we still have a long way to go. Being a Black plus size pop artist on the rise comes with its fair share of challenges.”

Dynamic mother-daughter and best friend duo Ginny (Antonia Gentry) and Georgia Miller (Brianne Howey) return in “Ginny & Georgia” Season 2, which gets even more chaotic than the already very complex first season of the Netflix show. Another of Georgia’s past loves enters the mix, she commits some more questionable actions and many other twists and turns develop within the 10 hour-long episodes.
Ginny and her friends are no strangers to the TikTok scene, so some song choices reflect Gen Z’s poppy preferences. The show is also not afraid to explore both the high, happy feelings of life as well as the deeper, darker, lower ones, and it does so sonically with some beautiful choices. Felix Mallard chose a song for an important scene of his, and actress Brianne Howey easily chose a song to embody her character Georgia.
Here are all the songs in “Ginny & Georgia” Season 2:...
