Kvea and Kcet each won eight trophies at the 75th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards to lead the field just like they did at the nomination stage. Telemundo’s Kvea swept all three regularly scheduled newscast categories, morning, daytime and evening. CBS/KCAL9 followed with 4 wins, with ABC7 and Spectrum SportsNet LA tied at 3 and Kmex, Spectrum News 1 and Spectrum SportsNet at 2. The honored telecasts included two tributes to local icon Vin Scully who died last summer.

Kvea is clearly doing something right. The Telemundo-owned Los Angeles station, part of a duopoly with sister NBC outlet Knbc, swept this year’s key newscast categories at the 75th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards. The Spanish language station dominated the evening, winning the Emmys for evening (7 p.m. to 12 a.m.), daytime (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and morning (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.) newscasts.
Kvea had won the daytime newscast Emmy last year as well.
Overall, Kvea earned eight L.A. Area Emmy awards this year, tied with local public broadcaster Kcet. (That was also up from Kcet’s haul of six last year.) Given the tie with Kvea, that still preserves Kcet’s streak of this being the seventh year in a row that Kcet won the most.
The Kcbs/Kcal duopoly was next in line, with four wins, while ABC-owned Kabc and cabler Spectrum SportsNet LA were next with three.

Public broadcaster Kcet — part of a PBS duopoly with Koce “PBS SoCal” — is back on top at the Los Angeles Area Emmys. Thanks to locally produced series like “Artbound” and “Broken Bread,” Kcet dominated the L.A. area Emmy nominations, announced Tuesday, with 24.
That’s a return to the top spot among nominees, and up from 15 last year. Cable news outlet Spectrum News 1, which dominated last year’s Emmy nominations, was down to 14 this year (vs. 23 in 2022) — still good enough for third place.
Meanwhile, Telemundo outlet Kvea (part of a duopoly with NBC-owned Knbc) saw a huge surge as well, with 20 nominations — up from just 8 last year. That meant Kvea was not only tops with Spanish outlets, but it was also tops with all commercial broadcasters. That includes its sibling NBC4, just posted just two nominations.

The Jefferson County grand jury has issued an indictment in the Breonna Taylor case, announcing three counts against one officer for wanton endangerment and disregard for human life by randomly shooting into an apartment and not against a specific target. Police officers are required to shoot at specific targets, not indiscriminately. The “wanton disregard” charge could result in a five-year prison sentence. It is considered a lesser offense than manslaughter, which could bring a lengthier sentence.
Taylor was killed on March 13 at age 26 after being shot by three Louisville Metro Police Department officers, only one of whom was charged today — the one who was initially fired for the killing. The cops forced entry into her apartment with a no-knock search warrant and Taylor was shot eight times in the midst of gunfire between the police and Taylor’s boyfriend. The police had a no-knock warrant because they believed Taylor’s apartment was housing drugs,...

Jordan Peele led a rallying cry over the weekend of high profile directors and actors calling for the arrest of the three police officers who killed Breonna Taylor. The phrase “Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor” became a viral Twitter topic on June 7, just two days after what would have been the late Taylor’s 27th birthday. Taylor was killed in March at age 26 after being shot by Louisville Metro Police Department officers. The cops forced entry into her apartment with a no-knock search warrant and Taylor was shot eight times in the midst of gunfire between the police and Taylor’s boyfriend. The police had a no-knock warrant because they believed Taylor’s apartment was housing drugs, but no drugs were ever found.
Peele’s tweet to arrest the cops who killed Taylor went viral with over 131,000 re-tweets and over 365,000 favorites and counting in less than 24 hours. Peele...

Protesters gathered on Friday at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to support the Black Lives Matter movement.
The protest comes one day after David Oyelowo, who starred in the 2014 best picture nominee “Selma” as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., revealed that Oscar voters were angered by the cast wearing T-shirts that said “I Can’t Breathe” to the film’s Los Angeles premiere in protest of the murder of Eric Garner. Director Ava DuVernay confirmed the story on Twitter.
“Members of the Academy called in to the studio and our producers saying, ‘How dare they do that? Why are they stirring s–-?’ and ‘We are not going to vote for that film, because we do not think it is their place to be doing that,'” Oyelowo told Screen Daily’s Screen Talk.
