27 December 2009 6:35 AM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

The second poster for “Youth in Revolt” directed by Miguel Arteta from the script by Gustin Nash, Miguel Arteta and Michael Cera has been unveiled.

The coming-of-age comedy, based on the acclaimed novel by C.D. Payne, “Youth in Revolt,” is the story of Nick Twisp, a unique, but affable teen with a taste for the finer things in life like Sinatra and Fellini, who falls hopelessly in love with the beautiful, free-spirited Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday) while on a family vacation.

But family, geography and jealous ex-lovers conspire to keep these two apart. With Sheeni’s encouragement, Nick abandons his dull, predictable life and develops a rebellious alter ego: Francois. With his ascot, his moustache and his cigarette, Francois will stop at nothing to be with Sheeni, and leads Nick Twisp on a path of destruction with unpredictable and uproarious consequences.

trailer break: ‘Youth in Revolt’ redband

9 December 2009 9:56 AM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Oh my god, it’s Nice Guy(Tm): The Movie! Everyone knows girls only like jerks, so wimpy, doormatish, insecure Nice Guy transforms himself into a deranged, criminal asshole in order to get the girl... and it works! Ah fuck. Really, guys? (Because of course this movie is exclusively the creation of guys: director Miguel Arteta, screenwriter Gustin Nash, based on books by C.D. Payne.) Aren’t you tired of hearing yourselves bitch about how girls don’t like you because you’re too nice and polite and kind? When will you realize that you’re the problem, that girls just don’t like with no personality, no thoughts of their own, and no backbone? (See HeartlessBitches.com for a more complete feminist rant against the “nice guy.”) »

Ha! Check out the poster from Michael Cera’s upcoming comedy Youth in Revolt in all its Twilightyness. I dig the New Moon vibe. I also dig cool sunglasses.

While we’re at it, I also love red band trailers. Check it out below.

Youth in Revolt is the teen comedy from Charlie Bartlett’s screenwriter, Gustin Nash, and director Miguel Arteta (Chuck & Buck). The film is an adaptation of C.D. Payne’s first book in a series of best-selling satirical novels starring Nick Twisp, a sexually charged 14-year-old whose intelligence and hormones get him into all sorts of adventures.

Youth in Revolt leaps into its wide release in the U.S. on January 8th.

Aff Review: Youth In Revolt

3 December 2009 9:41 AM, PST | GordonandtheWhale | See recent GordonandtheWhale news »

Rating: 8/10

Writers: C.D. Payne (novel), Gustin Nash (screenplay)

Director: Miguel Arteta

Cast: Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Jean Smart, Steve Buscemi, Zach Galifianakis, and Ray Liotta

Studio: Dimension Films

By now, we all get that Michael Cera was born to play the awkward and stammering virgin. And just as we grow tired of that one friend  who constantly whines about not getting any, many of us have grown weary of watching Cera play the same role in every film. That being said, if you walk into Youth In Revolt expecting to see same old Cera, you will be pleasantly surprised and/or disappointed. In Youth In Revolt, Cera gets to break out of and stick to the role that has made him a household name.

Youth in Revolt | Review

Director: Miguel Arteta Writer(s): C.D. Payne (novel), Gustin Nash (screenplay) Starring: Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Jean Smart, Mary Kay Place, M. Emmet Walsh, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Long special appearances by: Fred Willard, Ray Liotta, Steve Buscemi Nick Twisp (Michael Cera) is a 14-year old going headstrong through puberty. Equal parts a derivation from J.D. Salinger, Daniel Clowes, François Truffaut and Wes Anderson, Nick is obsessed with girls and enjoys great literature, foreign cinema and Frank Sinatra – which means, of course, that he is still a virgin. Nick’s parents are divorced. He lives with his mother (Jean Smart) and her white trash boyfriend, Jerry (Zach Galifianakis doing what he does best). Jerry rips off some sailors – thus Jerry, Nick’s mother and Nick thrust forward into the narrative as they go on vacation (into hiding) at a Christian trailer park. This is where Nick falls instantly head-over-heels for »

Review of Youth In Revolt

Review by: Hal MacDermot

Rating: 7.8 out of 10

Youth is Revolt is the screen adaptation of C.D. Payne’s cult book series charting the progress of the awkward, sex obsessed, super smart teen that is Nick Twisp. Michael Cera is made to inhabit this deadpan absurdist comedy world, a place where the teens are way more intelligent than the adults. It’s not an original take on life, but it’s probably how most teens think, so “whatever.” The strong supporting cast includes Steve Buscemi as Dad, and Zach Galifianakis as Jerry, one of his Mum’s pig boyfriends. Gustin Nash’s script feels slightly jerky, but suspending disbelief when you are laughing is usually easy.

Nick Twisp believes everyone is getting more sex than him, and he’s probably right. His separated parents certainly are. Buscemi is banging half-his-age-hottie Ari Graynor, »

Tiff ‘09: Youth In Revolt

24 September 2009 8:13 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Youth In Revolt Directed by Miguel Arteta Mean-spirited screwball comedy Youth in Revolt , based on C.D. Payne's 1993 novel, follows Nick Twisp (Michael Cera), a cynical, sex-obsessed 16-year-old who, while on vacation in a trailer park, meets and falls in love with beautiful, intellectual teen rebel Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday). The only things standing in the way of the consummation of  Nick's  first love is Sheeni's poetry-writing ex-boyfriend Trent (Jonathan B. Wright) and her religious zealot parents (M. Emmett Walsh and Mary Kay Place) . It barely needs to be said that Michael Cera has perfected his socially awkward, asexual, nerdy adolescent shtick. For some, it might be tiring to see the same actor in the same role once again trying to lose the same virginity, and Youth in Revolt is more of the same. As Nick, Cera doesn't do much to elevate the material to anything other than a typical coming-of-age story, »
